Thanks for a very clear and concise review, just bought one of these and the manual not vert clear, your review has helped a lot and can now use it confidently.
I have this, it’s very good and your review was excellent… I enjoyed the proper aspect you did of doing the test with the practical explanation of the physical cables removed and reversed, so the consumer will actually see how it is for real as opposed to just telling us
I purchased one of these units for testing Live/Neutral reverse in the caravan as I am lead to believe that some camp sites in Europe may have this situation. I wasn't 100% sure what all the 'electrical terminology' meant in the rather concise instructions that come with the unit. Many thanks for a very helpful video Nash. I now have a better idea of what I am doing!
i purchased this identical PAT Tester the other day and tested today and all plugs sockets are ok except 2 in kitchen that i have never used as no power. After using this device showing no lights - im now aware that my Live/Red wire must be disconnected. As i have no Electrical knowledge I never touched it but now I have a basic knowledge in the home!! Superb video!! Ive got me a basic Multimete3r 830b coming, just so I can know how to use one but moreso to test Computer cable ie Cat 5/e or 6 types and batteries and other stuff as always wanted to know these kinds of things.
Clearly explained .Thank you. I have one similar tester. A friend showed me his socket tester and all lights lights up when its "Correct" but in this model only two red lights up to indicate "correct". However, in this model "All" lights up to indicate faulty ground connection.
Just got a shock (long fuzz rather than a pop - apparently open ground from reading forums) from the back of my PC and from a metal desk fan! So I removed the extension lead and relocated the PC nearer a mains wall socket. I dare not 'test' the back of the PC now, so iv ordered one of these instead! I hope it is just a crappy extension socket Great vid
Got one coming tomorrow from Amazon as I am busy wiring in an Electric Hookup to the campervan conversion I've done (Vivaro). Just to be on the safe side! It will also be useful to see whether there are any faults from the campsite hookup posts themselves.
Superb video! Just bought one of these as wanna test sockets around the house, as suspect one in kitchen may have a fault. Your video has really explained how to easily understand this essential piece of kit. Thank you.
I should get a US version of this, because there are a few questionable sockets in my house that I always wondered about because if two devices are on at the same time, it blows the fuse in the breaker panel. So something must be wired incorrectly.
I tested my sockets with this tester and I have several sockets , live ground reverse, missing ground. Isn't this dangerous? Especially if you connected an outlet strip?
How do those that show all lights on when correct work? The ones that show two have just the lights wired between the prongs. That is the left is line-neutral, the middle line-earth and the right neutral-earth.That is why the right should be off. The other tester needs some more complicated circuits to turn the third light on.
No plug in tester will determine N&E reverse as it the same return path like - on a battery. Earth is for the flow return path for dangerous over current to ground.
It is almost impossible to detect. Almost none of such simple testers detect it. If you have an RCD then it will trip on such cases immediately on use.
Don’t like it for one reason... I usually use a socket tester that has a audible noise, I like to hear it as I am flicking through unidentified breakers.
Hi, Very useful in fact just purchased one, all sockets in house ok except one which shows all 3 lit but the 2 on right are dimmer than led 1 which is brighter, you don't cover this scenario so any ideas ? (uk)
Maybe a loose neutral in your panel box, tighten down the neutrals on the neutral bar, i was on a service call a few weeks ago and that was the problem

An RCD is detecting the balance between phase line and neutral. In most cases is is 30 mA but can be more. Once the button is pressed is sends a short between the two legs. Even if they're cross connected they should still trip.

Hi, I don't know if you or anyone can help out. I am testing couple of sockets and the right most LED is dimly lit no matter if the socket is on or off. When on, the other two brightly light up as they should but the right most LED still stays dimly lit. What is causing this?
Great video, very well explained and 100% tested product. But i'm curious about another tool you have. Your RCD Protector Plug. Is there a link that you can give for me to buy one as yours? Thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching. It looks like my Flymo Protector Plug is no longer available. However if you Google RCD protector adaptor you should find lots of alternative products, I hope this helps.

Would have been a good idea to cover the screw when you had the live in the earth terminal. Your finger looked pretty close at times.

What is the RCD tester button for? Can we just plug it into any socket and press the RCD button without the device at the back? What will happen?

Sounds like a serious problem. If you cannot fix it call an electrician. Looks like the ground wire is put on the switch.
Did you choose a single pole switching socket on purpose?
Yes, it was on hand in my workshop.
