He provided a humorous side to Supertramp, with his introductions and sax solos. Gave an image and eccentric quintessential English character to the group.
i met John Helliwell in 1979 in cascais,he and Dougie thonson where the nicest guys of the band.good old times ,when all the geatest bands in the world come to play live in dramatico the Cascais just 5oo metres from my house.

It almost didn't happen, we had to have a special transformer built in one day. I have a question, why was the concert in Cascais and not Lisbon? Was there not a suitable venue in Lisbon? Thanks Bertie (my Supertramp nickname)
John-that's how I saw you guys.WNEW-FM gave away tickets I called and won them had great seats and saw you guys do the whole Crime Of The Century album.
Is it him playing for the Paris concert ? If yes then I have to tell him I love his sax in general and his interpretation of Ainn't Nobody But Me is just pure genious. A real musician. Thank you for your brillant work Sir.
You should really stop spamming your crap on here. I don't even know why you are so against him. He never claimed to be the main driving force behind the band, but neither Roger nor Rick would have claimed that John was "a non entity". If you like Roger as much as you say, you should probably realize that he would say John Helliwell, Dougie Thomson, and Bob Siebenberg were all very important. Helliwell's sax solos are iconic, as was his stage presence. If you don't feel that way, then I'm not sure you actually like Supertramp. I can't imagine The Logical Song with it. Thomson's fretless bass work is fantastic - songs like Even in the Quietest Moments or School or Give a Little Bit have amazing bass lines that any actual Supertramp fan should be well aware of. And I can't say enough good things about Siebenberg's drumming. Same with your ridiculous opinions about Ringo. I'll take the opinions of these guys: ua-cam.com/video/wJTjjAXDZSY/v-deo.html Over yours about drumming any day.
@@systemafunk I wouldn’t let idiots like that guy get to you. He’s obviously that up his own arse that he’s the only one who likes his own comments lol. You just know that one like with guys like him is his own. 😂 John Helliwell is a fantastic player and big part of the supertramp sound.
I know Roger Hodgson had successful albums on his own after SuperTramp and this loser did not. I know Roger wrote and performed the biggest hits of Super Tramp and this loser wrote none a single hit song. So looks like you are the idiot since I can spell out facts and you can't
Spell out what facts? How many Beatles hits did Ringo Star write? How many songs did John Entwistle write for The Who? Please don't embarrass yourself further with your lack of knowledge. Every member of a band contributes to the sound that identifies that band. One thing that everyone knows when they hear Supertramp is that sax. Roger Hodgson was a great singer songwriter but Supertramp also had Rick Davies providing that counterbalance. So now who the idiot?
Highlighted reply Glencairn 04, listen you moron, Ringo Starr is a joke. I am a drummer and no accomplished drummer thinks Ringo Starr was a critical part of the beatles. He could be replaced with any competent drummer. It takes a real idiot to think every member of a band is important to the success of that band. Well you ignorant fool, tell that to Roger Hodgson, Roger Waters, Glenn Frey and the countless other great artists who resented being in a band where they contribute the most to the music creation but have to give credit to lesser members. And that is exactly what this loser saxophone player is. He is a nobody who contributed nothing to Super Tramps major hit song which made them famous. This loser was so pathetic I saw him playing the fucking tambourine in videos because he had nothing to give to the music other than play the instrument any idiot can play. I bet you are a master at the tambourine yourself
mgpixlab, I think you are a dumb as a door knob. As a drummer, I know playing drums is relatively easy. Any high school drummer could play a lot of what these so called "great" drummer play without any drum lessons Now because you are a complete imbecile I will explain something about song writing to you. It takes a creative and talented mind to come up with the melody, chords, lyrics, and structure of a good song. That requires a ton of more talent then it does to play a f#cking simple drum pattern. Hell, most songwriters use a drum machine when they are writing the songs by themselves because it is easy to add the drumming. I think you obviously never wrote a decent song in your pathetic life. Now I wonder if Super Tramp fans had the choice of going to see Roger Hodgson play his contributions to SuperTramp or go to see Helliwell go and play his contributions to SuperTramp which one would most fans want to see? I am sure it is pretty clear who the winner would be.

Exactly what Supertramp needed. Superb character to back up the music we all grew up with
Always liked Helliwell! Great front man for Supertramp.

I was on the crew for that concert. Best meal I've ever had, a seafood restaurant in Cascais!

Yes!!!!
Fez parte da grande fase do SUPERTRAMP, tocava vários instrumentos além de banking vocal em algumas músicas.
King of sax. ✌🏼️
Era um show à parte, bem humorado, elegante... Supertramp, sempre!
I wonder how many instruments he plays? He is such a good musician.
Didn’t Andy formerly play lead guitar for the band Sweet?
❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"Roger, our guitar player..." wtf
Indeed. What's wrong? Roger was playing guitar in supertramp, and the keys, too
@@boygeorge29 I was thinking the same! Roger was fantastic at guitar!
I didn't like it either. Roger was the soul of the band, in my opinion. A great composer, singer and musician in fact.
Really he should of said Roger our multi instrumentalist and main hit song writer. That would of been a more accurate description. 😆
Hodgson was Super Tramp and this guy was a non entity
