Thanks for watching! Here’s a video where I talked about different subwoofer set up options: Home Theater Basics: Powered Tower Setup ua-cam.com/video/tKvp8q2Hv2U/v-deo.html
This is very informative. Thanks a lot. So can these towers be used without a receiver? I use the Edifier powered Bluetooth bookshelf speakers I am able to hook my subwoofer to it which plays perfect. Do you think I hook the definitive towers to this powered Bluetooth bookshelf speakers ?
I just picked up the BP9080x towers with the CS9080 center speaker, Undecided to go with the Definitely technology Bookshelf D11 speakers, Or these SR-9080 15” Bipolar Surround Speakers, Any recommendations?
Hello, I would be so lucky if you respond to me lol here goes nothing. I got a marantz cinema s70 I believe it’s called for my birthday. I don’t know much about speakers and receivers but I walked in to best buy yesterday and heard the Def Tech DM70s and boy was I blown away. Anyway they were on sale so I got them on adrenaline lol Waking up this morning I realized I probably bought too much speaker because this receiver only does 50 watts a channel. Was this speaker a bad pick up? Maybe you or any of you can provide guidance. I would appreciate it. Thanks.
So if you get 2 towers and a centre, all with powered subwoofers, you would need a AVR that support 3 subwoofer outs, which most don't right? So would you split one sub out to both towers?
Great review man! I have the SR 9040 bipolars running side surround duty in a mostly Polk mis-matched set-up. They are crisp, clear and full-bodied, so I am happy with them. Keep up the great work. Your sub count deserves the be much higher. Off topic, nice jeans, bro. Can I ask what brand?
Hello Cody! Great video. I have a question for you. I have a set up with 4 towers. 2 BP9080X and 2 BP9020 with a 9080X center channel. When the technician installed my system, left the rear twoers with no Subwoofer activated. He claims that it wasn't necessary. Do you think that it is a good idea to enable the integrated subwoofer? Or is the technician right? I just want to get the best setup. Thanks in advance!
He's right it's not necessary but activating them may yield more balanced bass across all the seats in your theater. So here's what I would do: 1. Play a bass track you're very familiar with. 2. Sit in each seat and note if a seat(s) has more or less bass than the other(s). 3. Activate the rear towers. 4. Replay the bass track and see if it fixes the issue you notice. Obviously this will take some time to complete but it's a good way to know if activating the rears are worth it. Hopefully this helps! 😀
This was a great video on the DefTech BP series. I learned a few tips so I appreciate it very much. The question I have is how do I remove the plastic plugs on the speaker connections to use banana plugs. Thank you I’m advance.
Would you happen to know how to replace the subwoofer on the 9080x tower speakers? They sent me the replacement subs but no instructions I’ve already replaced the amp but still no sound from the subs yet
Very articulate and well explained review. I wish you had addressed the keyhole mount on the SR9080. This makes me nervous that it's relying on a cheap mount for such an expensive speaker.
Thanks for commenting! 😀 Sorry I didn't discuss the wall mount. I didn't use the mounts in the review because I don't mount review hardware unless absolutely necessary. That would lead to many holes in the wall 😂.
This was great, Cody. What connection scheme would you suggest to use the LFE on the center and towers with a Marantz AV7706 that has only two sub outs? A splitter for the towers and the second LFE to the center?
Nicely described as always😍. Def Tech is entirely different tech😀 , we should do the acoustics specifically for def tech, otherwise u may loose the reflections they were looking for. You should have a specific location for your center channel (there is an up-firing subwoofer) Etc
I already have two RSL 10" subwoofers. In integrating the BP9060s with external subwoofers, I'm guessing the speakers should be set to small and crossed over around 40Hz, correct? That would still take advantage of BP9060's 8" woofers and push lower frequencies to the subs. Am I seeing this correctly? In this setup, seems like it would be difficult determine where to set the BP9060's volume, right?
You are correct with the setup. As for the volume you can run your receivers auto calibration function to set volume at the listening position. Another option is a sound meter app for your phone and pink noise. You’ll be looking for approximately 75db at the main listening position.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist My home set up is currently the pro monitor 600. But I’ve got a much larger living room now and I want to upgrade the speakers. I’ve ordered the CS-9040 for the Centre. Now I want front and rear speakers. Any recommendations? I’ll probably get pro monitor 1000’s due to budget as surrounds.
Great review and I'm glad I picked this video for My First Watch from your channel. I looked at the speakers this past weekend at Best Buy and I think they had them set up differently as I felt it was lacking on the highs quite a bit. Thank you for setting them up correctly and letting me know that they do sound good, better than I thought because I did like them as far as the base goes. Question, how many y Splitters can you use on a sub out?
Thanks for watching! That’s a good question, I haven’t done any testing but I probably wouldn’t use more than 2 maybe 3 but 3 would be pushing it in my opinion. For those I would definitely use very high rated splitters.
I don't use sub out, I prefer L/C/R on my pre-outs and set the speakers to large and add a sub if you don't have one. If you use sub out the bass becomes boomy and can overwhelm the mids and highs. Vocals will sound heavy and congested. Use the woofers in the towers to blend better with the sub .
Great video. You answered a lot of my questions. I have the 9080 CT and we love it. I'm considering 9060 towers an the surround speakers you reviewed. For us it's all about movies. Before I match/ invest in the towers and surround to match the CT, is there a brand(s) and brand series that you'd recommend checking out before I do? It would be easier to just change the CT for tonality. Thanks for what you do on your channel.
Thanks for watching! Obviously I don't know your budget or sound preferences but.............Right now I'm partial to the Arendal Sound and their 1723S series. They have a nice neutral sound, incredibly low distortion, and a great build quality. A lot of other people like them too so I don't have an issue recommending them. I'll be reviewing the 1961 Towers in a few weeks but I talk about the 1723S here: ua-cam.com/video/jNa-l8Rm6P8/v-deo.html. You can find out more about their speakers here: bit.ly/3RQ0ibu
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I have to say, what I really appreciate about you is your replies as timely and thorough. You did just Arendal Sound. You read my comment/ question, gave it some thought then gave a complete reply. Trust, your efforts are recognized and appreciated. I'll check out Arendal Sound. Have a great rest of your weekend.
Did you experience any popping from the subs when powering down? Still torn between the Def Tech 9060 and SVS Prime Pinnacle. Which do you like most for mostly TV/ movie viewing?
I never heard a pop at any point. I haven’t heard the Prime Pinnacle but based on my prime Tower experience I’d choose the BP9000 series. I enjoyed watching movies and listening to them more than the Prime towers.
Yes, I've heard other's mention it in the comments section. The setup I had was for review so I had it for a few weeks then sent it back. If you have concerns definitely call DEF Tech and find out about their warranty before purchasing. I would also ask if they have upgraded any of the internals to address this if it is a systemic problem. Hopefully this helps. 😁
good choice if you bought these! thanks for the review, just been looking at these recently, you should compare them to polks new reserve floorstanding speakers and see how they compare, being that they are so related
I didn't buy these, they are review units. I'd like to compare them to the Reserve series but I'll need to send them back to Def Tech, sorry. If I'm able to get the Reserves I'll try to remember to talk about the sound differences. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😀
This is a great video, Cody! I bought my 9080 setup for 4 years ago: 4 BP9080x towers, 2 SR9080 speakers, the CS9080 center, and a pair of SuperCube 4000 woofers. I have a question: if I don't use the LFE input on the tower speakers, can I still utilize the built-in subwoofers in those speakers? I feel like movies I watch have an intense and ground-shaking bass but I don't know if that's due to my SuperCubes or a combination of the SuperCubes and my towers' built-in woofers
Thank you! 🙏🏾 Yes, you can still use the built in subs without using the LFE connection. Set the speakers to “large” in your AVR and leave the subwoofer setting to “on”. That will tell your Avr to sent the bass to the speakers set to “large” and to your stand alone subwoofers. Let me know what you think of the bass. Is it better? Worse? I’m curious 🧐😁😁
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I can't see my previous reply, in which I sent an article talking the difference between the small and large setting for speaker configuration. I just tested the final battle from Aquaman, it's got some of the best bass frequency response I've ever heard on my setup. I first tested with the large speaker configuration and it sounded good. As I write this, I am testing with the small speaker configuration, which directs more low-frequency power to my two subwoofers. The difference is noticeable and I find the small speaker setting more powerful and balanced with the subwoofers. If you have subwoofers with your tower speakers, I would like to recommend you change your speaker settings to small. Again, thank you for this detailed and informative video! 😁 I hope my response helps you in any way!
@@FPSLounge_ Hi, just curious what level you set your crossover at. Im currently running mine at 60hz but wondering if it would be better to set it at 40 and let the internal crossover handle it
How do you compare them against Klipsch? I am getting a deal on both Klipsch and def tech. That's, klipsch 8000f, 504c and 502s for 3500CAD and bp9060, cs9080 and sr9080 for 3500CAD. At the same price point which one is better? I am in Canada, Winnipeg and does not have the luxury to listen both side by side and decide so I may rely on your feedback.
Thanks for asking. I haven't tried the 8000 series but my quick thoughts...........If you're movie watcher go for the Def. Tech. The sound is a little warmer and better for movies. If you listen to music more go Klipsch. The sound is brighter (think more detailed at the high end) and pairs well with music.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thanks for your quick response:) actually the system will be in our living room which is open to rest of the floor. Move and music is almost 50:50. Are def tech a step ahead klipsch for the same pricing? How do you compare the def tech vs your klipsch 280s? As well as how about the center channel? Is def tech center channel better than massive quad driver klipsch center?
Ok, for that purpose I’d choose the Def. Tech. My klipsch system is bright and some people find them so bright that they call them harsh. The 8000f series is supposedly not as bright and therefore less “harsh”. I wasn’t able to hear them in my room so I can’t comment specifically. I suspect the Def. Tech sound is more pleasing to more ears and they’re good with details and definition so that’s why I recommend them over my own brand preference.😁 Hopefully this helps.
I commented on another reviewers video but he wasn’t sure about the answer. When you run the towers full range without using the LFE input then aren’t you losing content from the LFE channel for movies? Or does the receiver direct all that content to the mains if no subwoofer is enabled? And then does it work the same for the center and surrounds (assuming you use the towers for surrounds)?
When tower speakers are set to ‘large’ in the Avr, remaining speakers set to ‘small’, and subwoofer set to ‘no’. The Avr sends the bass to the speakers set to large.
It can send info to both the large speakers and subwoofers if the correct setting is turn on in the AVR menu. I think it’s called “Double Bass” in the menu settings for Yamaha receivers and something else in others brands but they all do it. Hopefully this helps!
Are these in your everyday family room or is this a home theater? I want to get these but I have a open floor plan family room, the left side of my room is open and has my dinning and kitchen.
No, I haven’t tried the Sony but here’s my quick thoughts. If you have a centered seating setup then that system should work pretty well. If your seating isn’t quite centered, depending on which seat you sit in, you’ll probably notice a particular speaker is louder than the others because you’re closer to it. I didn’t see frequency response in specs so I don’t know how low these speakers will play but if you plan to watch movies a subwoofer may make the experience even better. Hopefully this helps a little.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I don’t have a centered seating set up so I had to arrange the 4 speakers as best as possible to create my phantom speakers bubble, my current place don’t have to Best floor plan. 😂 I did choose to get the higher end sub for this setup but it doesn’t get very low, I think the lowest is around 50hz, it’s a just okay sub but the overall system isn’t bad by any means. I’ve just been playing around with different systems trying to find the best solution for my space and so far the Sony has been pretty good to me but I’m sacrificing the center sound stage since there’s no center speaker available other than me getting a newer Sony TV… and that’s a negative. 😩
Cool! I’m happy you found a system that works. I am curious just how well a Sony tv with acoustic surface tech would blend as a center. Hopefully I’ll be able to test that one day. 😁
How would you set the left and right towers (small or large) with no lfe connected if I add a standalone subwoofer for lfe to the receiver. If you suggest towers as small, am I not taking advantage of the powered sub woofer since receiver sends those signals only to standalone subwoofer? Thanks in advance
I would set them to small and connect a subwoofer cable to the towers and standalone subwoofer. If your AVR has 2 Sub out connections use 1 with a Y-connector (here's one from Amazon: amzn.to/3fhYO9v) to the towers and the other to your stand alone subwoofer.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist And, if you have two standalone subwoofers, then split the signal to both towers, right? That makes sense. In effect, you would have 4 subwoofers on duty.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist so I got the BP 9040 y towers. Along with the CS9040 center speaker. I’m amazed at how good these speakers sound. The bi polar design. Really is a game changer for me. Great mids great Highs. The built in subwoofers are freaking amazing. Best subwoofers I’ve ever integrated into my system. So much so. That I just listed my Tub 10 OSD subs for sale. The subwoofer’s in the Def techs are just sonically superior. To the OSD subs. The CS 9040 is the best center channel speaker. I’ve ever owned. Great sound. The body on human voices and onscreen action. Is superbly impressive. Overall I love these speakers. Your review was spot on.
Great Review! The Bi polar sound signature is a different beast for sure. I have used Def Tech speakers since 2001 and for the last year a bi polar tower for my mains. They do send a wide soundstage for sure but voices have a bit of an echo at times. The tweeter is smooth but is lacking some detail.. Ultimately after 20 years of loving the Definitive Tech sound ,the Bipolar sound was not for me. Switched to an all SVS setup and feel they are better in every categories, especially the tweeter.

I have and like the HSU research VTF -2 video here: ua-cam.com/video/_fQuCtSyfuo/v-deo.html. But you can always check out SVS they have great subs as well. Here’s a link where I compare an svs sub to a klipsch sub: ua-cam.com/video/nWLfZSOvOZ0/v-deo.html.
I really enjoy the front and rear array creating a wider more immersive sound. I compared it to my 260F and the 260F did sound more like a point source. I like the 260F tweeter a little better because it has a bit more detail but it lacks just a hint of clarity. Comparing bass, I haven't heard the SB2000 so I can't say but dual SB2000s will play deeper with more output than dual 9060s. As a package I think the Klipsch and SB2000 wins since the tweeter is more detailed and dual SB2000s will yield better bass performance. But the wider sound stage of the front and rear array is addictive. 😀😀
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Very good! I definitely liked it! I was anxious to see what you thought about them especially since I’m a DefTech lover! I’m on the fence between the Pinnacles and the 9060’s! I don’t know which ones to get!
Yea, I’ve heard about amps failing for some people. I didn’t experience anything like that but I only had a review sample for approximately 1 month. So I can’t say one way or the other about long term reliability.
The 9060 won’t go that far down, the 9080 may get closer. But if you truly want bass down to 16hz you may want to heavily consider a stand alone sub like the SVS PB-2000pro

Great review Cody. Needed your advice. I was wondering whether it would be ideal to mix match the Center with DEF CS9060 as currently they are in good sale price. Would so you recommend to go with DEF, Denon avr-x2800h doesn't have any preouts and won't be able to connect it via LFE the way its recommended in manual to connect LFE via Center preout option or would it have it connected without LFE option. Hoping to hear from you. Thanks
Hi, good question.... You can go with the DEF but honestly I would add the Wharfdale 4.C as the center channel because it will match tonally with the 4.2 on your front left and right. That way audio pans across the front stage are nearly identical in tonal quality. Obviously I don't know the price difference between the two but if you can hold out and save a bit for the 4.c I would. Sorry to be a downer but hopefully this helps.

Polk or definitive? Which one would you choose?
When you say that you have them so far from the wall. Does that mean from the back wall, side wall, or both?
Typically I'm referring to the back wall
Really thinking about getting these but im nervous about all the complaints about the amps going out and needing to be replaced.
Can you use banana plugs on the center channel?
So here's what I would do:
How do you compare the overall sound output of these Deftechs with SVS setup (say prime series speakers & PB1000 pros) for movies ?
This was a great video on the DefTech BP series. I learned a few tips so I appreciate it very much. The question I have is how do I remove the plastic plugs on the speaker connections to use banana plugs. Thank you I’m advance.
Ahhhhh 😁. Try a little knife or fingernail to underneath the plug and pull it out from the banana plug. Hopefully this makes sense. 😄
Would you happen to know how to replace the subwoofer on the 9080x tower speakers? They sent me the replacement subs but no instructions I’ve already replaced the amp but still no sound from the subs yet
No I don’t know how, sorry.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thanks for responding. What would be your recommendation for mounting these surround speakers and do you like the keyhole mount?
You have such a great soothing voice. Great review.
Thanks
This was great, Cody. What connection scheme would you suggest to use the LFE on the center and towers with a Marantz AV7706 that has only two sub outs? A splitter for the towers and the second LFE to the center?
Yes, I would split the towers and use the second sub out for the center channel. 😁
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Thanks for taking the time to answer. Appreciate you!
Nicely described as always😍. Def Tech is entirely different tech😀 , we should do the acoustics specifically for def tech, otherwise u may loose the reflections they were looking for.
You should have a specific location for your center channel (there is an up-firing subwoofer)
Etc
Thanks 🙏🏾
So, if you get the BP9060, which both have a LFE input, and a center channel such as the CS9080, you would need 3 LFE connections or use the Y cable?
Correct
I’m curious how you felt about the dialogue quality on these. Is it rich or thin
If memory serves, it was just a touch rich.
Does the CS9040 center channel Logo light up? If yes, how to turn it on?
I can’t remember
I already have two RSL 10" subwoofers. In integrating the BP9060s with external subwoofers, I'm guessing the speakers should be set to small and crossed over around 40Hz, correct? That would still take advantage of BP9060's 8" woofers and push lower frequencies to the subs. Am I seeing this correctly? In this setup, seems like it would be difficult determine where to set the BP9060's volume, right?
You are correct with the setup. As for the volume you can run your receivers auto calibration function to set volume at the listening position.
Another option is a sound meter app for your phone and pink noise. You’ll be looking for approximately 75db at the main listening position.
running powered towers plus 2 stand alone subs then my question is where do you place stand along subs in relation to your main speakers?
@@greggsmith7262 I don't actually have the BP9060s, but was considering them at the time.
Interesting voice dude. I was here for the SR-9080 - thinking of buying it for my rear speakers.
Thanks, the 9080 is a good choice. What speakers are you running up front?
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist My home set up is currently the pro monitor 600. But I’ve got a much larger living room now and I want to upgrade the speakers. I’ve ordered the CS-9040 for the Centre. Now I want front and rear speakers. Any recommendations? I’ll probably get pro monitor 1000’s due to budget as surrounds.
Your voice lowers my blood pressure lol. Great review!
Thanks 🙏🏾
Wow! Thank you 🙏🏾! I appreciate your kind and thoughtful reply, it is definitely encouraging, which I need from time to time. 😁 Have a great weekend!
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thanks! I'm not really in a hurry. Guess I will wait and hope that SVS sends you a pair of pinnacles for review.
Thanks for review. I have had the BP2000 series for 20 years now and looking to upgrade to SVS Pinnacle or ultras.
The popping is the amp shutting down!! Its normal all self powered speakers do it.
Great video... How is the performance for center cs 940 sir?
Thanks Check out 18:14, that's where I talk about the center channel
Have you heard of the definitive techs having amp problems ? I had to replace all 3 amps on my 9080 x towers and the cs 9080 x
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist oh yeah sorry ! my bad! well glad you got to share the experience with us man! been wanting to know about these!
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist thank you this helps a lot :)
Awesome review… Thanks a bunch.
Have the older system.
Thanks for watching
What speaker stands are you using for the SR9080s
I commented on another reviewers video but he wasn’t sure about the answer. When you run the towers full range without using the LFE input then aren’t you losing content from the LFE channel for movies? Or does the receiver direct all that content to the mains if no subwoofer is enabled? And then does it work the same for the center and surrounds (assuming you use the towers for surrounds)?
When tower speakers are set to ‘large’ in the Avr, remaining speakers set to ‘small’, and subwoofer set to ‘no’. The Avr sends the bass to the speakers set to large.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist But, not the sound designated specifically for the subwoofer, the ".1" mix. Please correct me, if I'm wrong.
It can send info to both the large speakers and subwoofers if the correct setting is turn on in the AVR menu. I think it’s called “Double Bass” in the menu settings for Yamaha receivers and something else in others brands but they all do it. Hopefully this helps!
Great review! Lots of details
Glad you enjoyed it
Are these in your everyday family room or is this a home theater? I want to get these but I have a open floor plan family room, the left side of my room is open and has my dinning and kitchen.
They were review hardware that I returned after the review, sorry.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist understandable. Did you try out the Sony HT-A9 system? I was looking for a video for that setup on your page.
I’m really late. But I just ordered the 9040 towers. Getting the CS9040 next.
Nice! Let me know what you think of them. 😁
Which SVS?

Hello 👋🏼 have or can you review the SVS center channel speaker 🔊 Please
Thank you Happy Easter 🐣🐰🙏🏼👍🏼✌🏼
hello what do you think your old Klipsch rp260f rp450c. and rp240s svs sb2000 compared to Defin Tech. Much better kit.
I’m sure you would have enjoyed the 9060 center better with the 9060 towers since it has the same size drivers and the power woofer in it.
Yes, that would have been nice. 😁 What did you think of the review? Agree/Disagree with my conclusions?
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Very good! I definitely liked it! I was anxious to see what you thought about them especially since I’m a DefTech lover! I’m on the fence between the Pinnacles and the 9060’s! I don’t know which ones to get!

Yea, I’ve heard about amps failing for some people. I didn’t experience anything like that but I only had a review sample for approximately 1 month. So I can’t say one way or the other about long term reliability.
I would like to know if they really reproduce lows down to about 16hz?!. Will be setting up in a small bedroom of 14×20. Thanks in advance.
The 9060 won’t go that far down, the 9080 may get closer. But if you truly want bass down to 16hz you may want to heavily consider a stand alone sub like the SVS PB-2000pro
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I have 2 Infinity SW-12 beta 12" I'm using in the bedroom paired with a pair of infinity RS-8A powered tower also in there. Great review Cody. Needed your advice. I currently have a setup of Denon Avr x-2800h with Wharfedale Evo 4.2 fronts 3 way speaker, Wharfedale Evo 4.1 surrounds 2 way speaker paired with 1 Wharfedale SW-12 inch subwoofer.
