  • This video is the 2nd part to the Intel N100 Server Upgrade series.
    In this video, we're installing the SATA card and 2.5GbE controller that slots into the WiFi m.2 slot. We also perform some performance tests to see whether or not a single PCIe lane is enough to properly utilize multigig connections.
    Links to the purchased SATA controller and M.2 2.5GbE controller:

    and if you install the Universal x86 Tuning Utility, you can set a constant 16w tdp, but active cooling is required, so the processor does not regulate back to 1.1 ghz even with prolonged use, it stays at 2.9

    What I did was use a wifi m.2 > mini pcie > pcie riser to connect to a 10gbe Aquantia asus card.
    Its the cheapest way since its old stock used for gpu mining. About $10 for the adapters.

      Interesting solution! Unfortunately I don’t have enough space in the case to have another riser board and accompanying power cable, but if I end up upgrading my other server, that might just work.

    Very good, exactly what I need to make my DIY NAS. So this configuration seems to be good. Bonjour de France
    Does the card support RAID ? RAID 1 ? Thanks

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr  7 місяців тому +1

      This card only supports software RAID from within the OS. It’s just a normal sata controller without RAID.

    I think you’re getting confused with the ‘allow caching of share’. It’s not a disk cache, or allow shared files to be cached / made available offline. It’s not to speed up disks , as such.

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr  6 місяців тому +1

      That feature is specifically for caching the server side files for offline use, it uses client side caching for that, which means you’re not pulling the file off the server each and every time but it possibly uses a local copy, which would invalidate the results in the video.
      It’s not likely it would’ve made a difference for this short test, but it’s best to leave it disabled.
      Because this feature is also a source of annoyance and weird issues for many Windows sysadmins, such as myself, I always disable it regardless :)

    What is the idle power consumption? thinking about getting one of these myself!

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr  6 місяців тому +2

      the entire system (including disks etc.) idles around 30-35 watts. The CPU is never truly idle, but that's fine. It adheres to its 6W TDP very religiously when left untouched.

    @Zie1u 6 місяців тому +1

    USB 2.5 GBE adapter could have been another route... but cool!!!!!

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr  7 місяців тому +7

      I’ve thought of that, but what I noticed is that USB network cards can’t do 24/7. Their buffers fill up over a few days and then the cards stop working. I verified this when I used USB 2.5GbE cards on a Synology NAS. In the end, an internal card is the more stable option and they cost about the same.

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr  7 місяців тому +2

      Yes, that should work. You’re bandwidth limited a bit though with just 1 lane. I’d probably opt for a m.2 to 6 port sata adapter that slots into the slot for the nvme SSD.

      @@nelizmastr Is the m.2 > 6 port a better option because of bandwidth>? I am trying to decide between just getting an older 5040itx vs this. I will be putting 3.5 inch drives in so the measly 1 sata port is pretty silly but everything else is quite a step up.

    Does this Mother board have NVMe or does not? I would like to split the m.2 slots to 4 SATA slots is it possible with this? (the asrock n100 know it, but it has only external DC powersupply support)

      It will run all ports, but it’ll be limited to the 2 PCIe 3 lanes, meaning a maximum of around 1GB/s which is plenty for SATA harddisks, and in mosr cases for cheap SATA SSDs in a RAID5
