Born in Germany in the 60s near Frankfurt, as a child I was fascinated by the Neon Lights of the big city around the corner. Growing up in the electric and pre-techno age of the 80, I was amazed how Kraftwerk expressed this fascination in an excellent song, which was - at least in my opinion - always underrated, compared to the two super hits Model and Roboter on the benchmarking Man-Machine Album. Then, many years later, listening to the same track again on OMD's Sugar Tax, I took me a while to remember where I know this song from - now moved to the sound of the 90s. More modern now, but still keeping the sense of the simple melody and clear expession of the original master pieces. Today, looking back fro 2023, the difference between 1978 and 1991 is so small and unimportant. And both versions still excite me. Kraftwerk's version to express something which we call "Zeitgeist" of the 70s in Germany, where the optimistic expectations for the future met the possibilities and opportunies of the computer age - and the "go live" experience of the 90s, where the computer age visions onf the earlier decades startet to become real. and OMD sucessully accepted the challenge to move a 70s classic to the 90s
I keep in mind that there would be no OMD version if it weren't for Kraftwerk's. 😉 Both worthy of a listen, but I prefer the original for the long instrumental minutes that close it out. It finds this really cool groove & runs with it.
Revisiting a year later and still feeling the love for the OMD version. A good piece of music by Kraftwerk "up levelled" to one of my favourite pieces of music. Well done OMD x

Love the transition from Kraftwerk to OMD ....OMD is surely a worthy successor to Kraftwerk's magic, we're luck to have them both ...

Kraftwerk's version is better. OMD's version doesn't sound futuristic because of the drums that sound like from an ordinary 2010s/2020s song.
hahahahaha, the OMD Version is from 1991. So when it sounds like 2010-2020 it IS futuristic. Setzen 6. Versetzung stark gefährdet.
