Elliot's biggest mistake was playing too well. You're not supposed to play well in Mario Kart until the last lap since that's when all the shit happens to the guy in 1st place.
Personally this is my favorite Mario Kart. The controls feel more arcade-ish which is fun, and better than the stiffer controls of newer games. The co-op karts are a neat idea, and I'm surprised they haven't tried it again. And it has character-specific items, which adds strategy to which characters you choose. Now if only it was online.
1:30 Peach and Daisy have a Heart Item that when the item is active, any item (except blue shells, I think) will be canceled out and you'll get the item you were hit with.
I remember one time in Mario Kart DS, I died in a balloon battle, came back as a ghost, and got to place down NORMAL Item Boxes! I don't know how it happened, but that was awesome!
Oh man! I remember the gamecube stage! Everytime I land on one of the buttons (Yes, even the power button), I would press the corresponding button on the GC. I found that funny as a kid, and I still do. XD
The boost start just requires pressing A at the exact moment "START" appears on screen. I had actually come up with a trick for it: lowering my thumb on the A button in time with the countdown to get the rhythm before starting off. Perfect boost almost every time.
How to get the Rocket Start at the beginning depends on the game you're playing: For Super Mario Kart and 64, you start holding the acceleration button just before the light turns green. For Super Circuit and Double Dash, you hold the acceleration button on the word "Go!". In the latter, assuming you're playing co-op mode, both players can press the button at the same time for an extra-long boost. For every Mario Kart game since DS, you simply hold the acceleration button at "2". The timing, however, is slightly earlier in the case of 7 and 8.
Mario Kart: Double Dash is one of my favorite Mario Kart games (it used to be my favorite but Mario Kart 8 came along...). Also, since the last Nintendo Direct showed us that SNES Rainbow Road, which was a retro track in Mario Kart 7, is gonna be in Mario Kart 8 as DLC meaning that they can repeat retro track, I'm hoping at some point to have Baby Park as DLC for Mario Kart 8. I freaking love this track beacuse of how chaotic it can be.
To boost at the beginning of a race, you just have to mash the "A" button consistently fast. That's why the characters run in place while you do it, think of it like running in place in Super Mario 64 DS, except you're repeatedly mashing the button instead of holding it.
I'm glad these guys are back to playing this game. And just like the first time they played this during smackdown Sunday, Elliot still remains in 3rd in luigi circuit. P.s. I love hearing john's Wario voice.
To get a start up boost, you just press the A button a split second after Go comes up. The only really weird thing about Double Dash is going back to it, is the bouncy physics. That's just me though.
Okay, I've had this thought in my head for years....To me. The big Piranha Plant in the sand on Dry Dry Desert reminds of the Sarlacc Pit from Star Wars.....and now I want a NintendoXStarWars fanfic done.-----HF64V1
What I remember doing to get the boost at the start of the race is to just tap the A button to the beat of the "3, 2, 1, Go" signals, not sure if that's what you're meant to do but I remember that working most of the time.
to get the starting boost you have to push and hold the accelerate button and then let go and push it again as soon as you see go, you could also mash the button like crazy and get it around 75 percent of the time.
2 things: 1. Quick correction for Matt: Peach and Daisy's special places a heart shield around their cart for brief period. Any oncoming item attacks (sans blue shell and lightning) the heart negates and Peach/Daisy will take the item...this can also include Yoshi and Birdo's special. 2. Yes, acceleration was the stat of all stats in Double Dash, which is why Toad and Toadette are widely considered to be the broken team in terms of overall stats since those two together have the highest base acceleration out of any pairing before you pick your cart. Put them with the Parade Cart...and...yeah, there's a reason why that cart's banned.
Since this seems to be the helpful info thread, I want to put in that the key to a boost in DD is to time A with the moment Lakitu starts the race. Two players together can get the Double Dash speed boost when both players time the press right.
By heavyweights; I was referring to the karts, not the racers. They get locked on a certain kart when you have a certain racer. Thanks for hte peach/daisy clearup; I forgot what they did.
Yeah, for quick reference as well, you can only use the karts for the heaviest class of one of your characters (so if you pick lightweight-midweight, you can only use midweight karts). The Parade Kart is the exception; any combination has access to that.
The go-to kart is, in my opinion, the Barrel Train. It is the heaviest lightweight kart and is somehow the fastest kart despite only having four stars. Its acceleration is also decent, but poor for a lightweight kart. On every track except DK Mountain, the world record uses the Barrel Train (in the case of DK Mountain, that would be the Toad Kart). Also, 7chaoemerald, character-influenced stats were not introduced until Mario Kart Wii. Choosing Toad and/or Toadette alongside another lightweight would not influence the kart's stats.
I think the boost was a light tap on each light of the countdown? I can't confirm it because Double Dash these days runs $80 at BEST and I don't have that to throw around just yet.
This was a bitch to beat on Mirror Mode? Don't remind me of my escapades in trying to unlock Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii... that game was like fucking hell. But it was definitely worth getting her.
Think of it like Johnny spending his summer on Sunshine. I spent like a month or so on that and it was awful. I had to be almost fucking perfect in every race and if I didn't get 1st on it I had to start it over. So annoying.
In hindsight, the "two characters" aspect to this game doesn't really do much. It gives an excuse for you to be able to carry 2 items at the same time, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just did that anyway without adding a second character. The only thing about it that really stands out to me is the fact that two people can play co-operatively for the first and only time in the series. Overall I can see why it hasn't returned.
As one who legitimately plays this game competitively (and I would even say maybe professionally) it's both super entertaining and painful to watch them play this game and talk about it.
woo :D love double dash was my first mario kart and half the reason I got a gamecube (along with SA2), my first nintendo home console. This is SOOOOO much better than super mario kart, 64 and the gamecude advance mario kart (forget if that came before DD) prefer MK8 to it now but was so fun to jump into mario kart with this game played so much multiplayer
If I remember correctly when me and my brother did it we accelerated for the first two seconds and then button mashed "A" for the rest. it worked now and then but we pretty much mastered it by the end of the game.
Johnny, to get the boost in double dash you need to mash the A button when the race starts. I guarantee if you follow my instructions you will get the boost every time you do it.
This is the best Mario Kart game by far. It is the only one whit character differences. The specials adds tons of fun customization possibilites. Even character whit the same special can have differences in cars depending on weigth. The tracks is well designed and has many dangers which makes them very intense and fun. Since. it's the hardest Mario Kart too whit brutal AIs on 150cc you really need to be skilled at the game to beat it. Mario Kart 8 is by comparision much worse whit no character differences, pathetic and boring tracks whit barely any dangers and a easier AI. Why is the tracks in Mario Kart 8 so easy? You need to put in dangers to make tracks interesting. Even the returning Double Dash tracks was made easier. Mario Kart Wii was a middle between Double Dash since it has just as hard tracks but the tracks were more bland and the the character differences were gone. i have no idea why Mario Kart 8 is so popular when it pales so much in comparision to this masterpiece i played so much when i was younger and still do,
Since you guys brought up that "SPLURGGGE" joke, I must ask. Johnny, Matt, Elliot, which one of you guys are gonna do Wind Waker whenever you guys get around to it?
I have the opposite problem with the boost, like DS kept throwing me off cuz it was so different, and then I couldn't afford a wii or wii U. So I can do 64 and the double dash, but the rest? fuggidaboudit.
Fun Fact: Diddy's voice clips in this and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour are ripped straight out of DK64. The same goes for DK, but I think that only applies to his voice clips in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.
yeah it could but whenever i tap the ever living shit out of the A button i get a boost . although it could be because i hit it at the rite moment . its up to the fans to decide lol
2:30 As a kid, i always called the bottom right screen(since it was usally 3 people playing) the Mario Kart Channel
Ah, this brings back some memories. So many good times with this game.
Elliot's biggest mistake was playing too well. You're not supposed to play well in Mario Kart until the last lap since that's when all the shit happens to the guy in 1st place.
Facts
Ah, a piece of my childhood that will never be forgotten. NEVER.
The bit with Wario's "lowrider" got me.
I was about to say "Wait, but didn't you guys do Double Dash once already?" Good thing I read the description and watched the video. :P
1:30 Peach and Daisy have a Heart Item that when the item is active, any item (except blue shells, I think) will be canceled out and you'll get the item you were hit with.
10:25
Wario: Hope you got something to stop that.
(King Boo tosses giant banana forward)
Wario: YOU THREW IT AHEAD OF US, YOU STUPID FUCK!
I remember one time in Mario Kart DS, I died in a balloon battle, came back as a ghost, and got to place down NORMAL Item Boxes! I don't know how it happened, but that was awesome!
Matt, I'd be more worried about someone driving over the eject button. Those in the middle just go flying off the GameCube.
the baby stage: the stage that I start drifting on, and never fucking stop. oh and win in first place nearly all the time lololol
To get the Rocket Start, you must press the A-button right when the signal turns green.
I tap A repeatedly during the countdown.
I used to do that. XD But I honestly prefer the way it was suppose to be done.
Seth Schaffner That's fine :P
Oh man! I remember the gamecube stage! Everytime I land on one of the buttons (Yes, even the power button), I would press the corresponding button on the GC. I found that funny as a kid, and I still do. XD
You actually press gas on GO!! To get the boost.
For more speed rapidly tap A during the countdown and when "GO!" appears. In Co-op, P1 and P2 both have to tap A rapidly.
Matt/Wario: "Ahh! Sorry, I just passed a stone." Great video xD
Did Matt hit himself with is own shell? LOL
The boost start just requires pressing A at the exact moment "START" appears on screen. I had actually come up with a trick for it: lowering my thumb on the A button in time with the countdown to get the rhythm before starting off. Perfect boost almost every time.

For every Mario Kart game since DS, you simply hold the acceleration button at "2". The timing, however, is slightly earlier in the case of 7 and 8.
YAAAAAY, Double Dash my favorite Mario Kart game, about times you guys got back to this!
the second press start screen is awesome when its dark, King Boo's glow brightens the screen
YES! Finally, my favorite Mario Kart game! This is gonna be good! ^_^
John, to get the starting boost in this game, you actually just press A-button on the go. It's different from any other Mario Kart ever.
Mario Kart: Double Dash is one of my favorite Mario Kart games (it used to be my favorite but Mario Kart 8 came along...).

P.s. I love hearing john's Wario voice.
6:30
Elliot: Damn it!
Matt: Hold onto that for me.
Elliot: Oh come on!
Matt: One more.
Elliot: Stop being a dick!
Matt: (imitates boo buddy)
You push A right when it says to go do a boost, if you mash the button you also get a boost.
To get a start up boost, you just press the A button a split second after Go comes up.
The only really weird thing about Double Dash is going back to it, is the bouncy physics. That's just me though.
I love the team concept of this game.
Nintendo should bring it back. :)
Okay, I've had this thought in my head for years....To me. The big Piranha Plant in the sand on Dry Dry Desert reminds of the Sarlacc Pit from Star Wars.....and now I want a NintendoXStarWars fanfic done.-----HF64V1
Johnny, you hit A when the lights turn green in this game, you don't start at two :)
The trick to accelerate when the race begins is to press the acceleration button (A) when START appears. You'll dash forward as if you had a mushroom.
Oh the memories. I had a great deal of fun from this game!
Johnny: 8
Elliot: 9
Matt: 13
Mark: 715623
hey john, if you want the starting boost just mash A when the timer hits 2 until you start racing
What I remember doing to get the boost at the start of the race is to just tap the A button to the beat of the "3, 2, 1, Go" signals, not sure if that's what you're meant to do but I remember that working most of the time.
you have to press a as soon as they say go but pressing it on 321 like you said can help get the rhythm down
to get the starting boost you have to push and hold the accelerate button and then let go and push it again as soon as you see go, you could also mash the button like crazy and get it around 75 percent of the time.
1 of the 3 mario games iv ever played.
liked it alot ^^
The game in general is good. Mario kart 64 was also a wonderful experience.
2 things:
1. Quick correction for Matt: Peach and Daisy's special places a heart shield around their cart for brief period. Any oncoming item attacks (sans blue shell and lightning) the heart negates and Peach/Daisy will take the item...this can also include Yoshi and Birdo's special.

Put them with the Parade Cart...and...yeah, there's a reason why that cart's banned.
And Matt said he picked all the heavyweights, Waluigi in this game was a medium class, then Mario Kart Wii made him a heavy

One shell
Two shell
Red shell
Blue shell
Death-swift-wings-comes-for-you-shell
Blood will run when you press start,
For all is fair in love and kart
Waluigi time.
BOOM!
Jesus, the Blue Shell in this game is just....holy shit, it doesn't even fly up for a bomb drop, it just rams the fuck into you
For the starting boost in this game, you have to push A at the last possible moment before "START".
To get the boost you have to press the a button right as the race starts and if you have two players on the same cart you get an even faster boost
honestly Toad+Bowser Jr. ends up being the best combination
My combo is Petey+Toad+Green Pipes.
King Boo+Petey Pirannah.
They have everything, they can even use the Boo Pipes if they want Acceleration Oriented stats.
***** My combo is I have Petey for every special item and Toad for if I'm falling behind I have a chance for the golden mushroom.
Nintendoman1998
But... King Boo and Petey both have a chance for the Golden Mushroom anyway.
***** Yes but Toad has a 100% chance of I while Petey and King Boo you may get the other items instead.
I love how you can dodge red shells in this game if you use the drift just right.
I think the boost was a light tap on each light of the countdown? I can't confirm it because Double Dash these days runs $80 at BEST and I don't have that to throw around just yet.
The boost is activated by pressing the accelerate right when it says Go, not by holding it at any of the numbers
The difference between this and Mario Kart 64 is that it doesn't suck.
The way that you get the Boost at the beginning is pressing "A" when the the counter says "Go."
The way how you get the boost at the start of the race is that you hold the gas button when the 2 on the countdown goes away
Please use Daisy next Sunday, I wanna see the lolz. :3
LOL Hello BluRacer7. I didn't know you watch these guys too. XD
I watched SGB years ago.
I see. Well, I've started watching them in 2011.
This was a bitch to beat on Mirror Mode? Don't remind me of my escapades in trying to unlock Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii... that game was like fucking hell. But it was definitely worth getting her.
um you get rosalina by having a save file of super mario galaxy in the wii
little lionheart I don't have that game. So I had to get 1 star on every cup in Mirror Mode.
oh
Think of it like Johnny spending his summer on Sunshine. I spent like a month or so on that and it was awful. I had to be almost fucking perfect in every race and if I didn't get 1st on it I had to start it over. So annoying.
was it worth it?

Overall I can see why it hasn't returned.
Does anyone see a problem here? Waluigi is basically a twig compared to everyone else, yet they classify him as a heavyweight character.
He makes up for being a twig by being the tallest bastard in the room
As one who legitimately plays this game competitively (and I would even say maybe professionally) it's both super entertaining and painful to watch them play this game and talk about it.
Toad + Paratroopa on Toad's kart FTW!
woo :D love double dash was my first mario kart and half the reason I got a gamecube (along with SA2), my first nintendo home console. If I remember correctly when me and my brother did it we accelerated for the first two seconds and then button mashed "A" for the rest. it worked now and then but we pretty much mastered it by the end of the game.
To get the boost I believe you have to mash the drive button when you either get to 2 or 1
Dylan Bellman You push the A button when the starting light's go green.
Johnny, to get the boost in double dash you need to mash the A button when the race starts. I guarantee if you follow my instructions you will get the boost every time you do it.
Baby Park was probably the best track, compared to how easy it was to make in the Mario Kart series.
Are you guys gonna upload in 60 FPS for your next videos?
To get the boost at the start press A when it says GO!

Johnny, Matt, Elliot, which one of you guys are gonna do Wind Waker whenever you guys get around to it?
6:08 oh hey I was just playing wind waker
You get the rocket acceleration as soon as it says START!
What I have always done to get the start boost is Hold the A button on 3 let go on 1 then hit A again on Go.
I haven't seen the video yet, i'll comment on this again when i'm done.
Everyone's so shiny!
In double dash as soon as it says start press a to get the speed boost.
To get a start boost hit a right at the beginning when lakitau but arm down
I grew up with this game
Can you steal balloons in Battle Mode? Or was that introduced in Mario Kart DS?
John to get the boost go right before the race starts
You hit the A button rapidly to get the boost in double dash
So, here's a question, can Peach/Daisy absorb Blue Shells?
I don't think so.
4:55 Matt, you have failed the GWEH clan. I am disappointed.
You know what i never understood. Why is King Boo a heavy weight? He's a ghost and he's floating so shouldn't he be at least a light weight?
I have the opposite problem with the boost, like DS kept throwing me off cuz it was so different, and then I couldn't afford a wii or wii U.
So I can do 64 and the double dash, but the rest? fuggidaboudit.
you rapidly press the A button to boost start
Fun Fact: Diddy's voice clips in this and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour are ripped straight out of DK64. The same goes for DK, but I think that only applies to his voice clips in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.
Actually, scratch that. DK's voice clips in Double Dash were also taken out of DK64.
You should play Bomb-omb blast next.
Are you guys going to Too many Games 2015?
Press a when it says go for a boost start
have you guys ever played mario kart at chuck'e'cheese?
i agree matt mirror mode was a bitch
to get the boost you need to tap the A button like mad
yeah it could but whenever i tap the ever living shit out of the A button i get a boost . although it could be because i hit it at the rite moment . its up to the fans to decide lol
im no good at those kind of games lol
4:33
What’s he saying?
Edit: also 4:38
Yay for anarchy!!!
Only played a demo of Double Dash
to get the boost you mash
Eliot seriously
Hey Johnny I'd check out your latest miiverse post
