Choosing your new Windows 11 PC: How much memory (RAM) do you need?

  • If you’re searching for a new Windows 11 PC, you may be wondering how much RAM you need. And what is RAM anyway?
    Most of us just call it memory. And unlike storage, RAM (random access memory) makes it possible to open files and apps quickly. It helps your computer run smoothly and work faster by keeping the info you use the most easily accessible. So, the more you have, the more you can access at one time. Get it?
    Find out about the minimum requirements, what we recommend, and when you’ll need the maximum amount of RAM for more demanding tasks (in less than 2 minutes!).
    Then you’ll be ready to choose and make the everyday easier with a Windows 11 PC that has the right amount of RAM for you.

    I recommend putting as much ram as you're willing to afford towards RAM. If you really what to know what your PC is absolutely capable of then put the full limit in your PC! That way you are getting the full power/capability of your hardware.

      Things do change over time, XP era felt like 4GB is optimal but not to businesses, they like to save cost than thinking long term. Win 10, 8GB. And now, Win 11 and possibly Win 12, you'll need 16GB including apps run smoother at that amount.

    Great information on RAM, although 16GB may seem like the norm for some because of Win 11, some apps like Photoshop & After Effects will need more RAM, some can go as high as 32GB or more for content creation. Gaming wise, 16GB is the new norm.

      It's not about Windows, or the need for more RAM wouldn't be scaling by the same factor across platforms. Stop thinking you're smart for throwing poo, when really you just look like a silly ape. All device categories are increasing in requirements, for the same reason they have been doing so over the past several decades. Quite simply because people keep doing more with their devices, and the quality of coding is always playing catch-up. Desktops and laptops also need more resources than tablets and phones because they do more tasks concurrently. Handhelds rarely do more than one intensive in the foreground. Windows devices are well known for their versatility and multitasking capabilities. But who am I fooling? You already knew that.

      It's true that the CPU does the work that makes your computer run, but RAM is used to store any information that the computer needs to remember.
      Without enough RAM, it will fill it completely, and slow down as it waits for extra RAM to be available.
      So this means that having low RAM (like 4GB) will bottleneck the computer's ability to run software fast. Go for 8GB for casual use, or 16GB for gaming/professional use.

      CPU = the chef
      RAM = the countertop at the chef's kitchen, so the chef can put cooking ingredients and utensils. More spacious countertop means the chef can use it to place more things.
      SSD = the fridge, where the ingredients are stored for long term.
      HDD = the refrigerated warehouse next door, same as SSD but accessing it takes longer time.
