As a fan of the series, I think your 'not a fan' viewpoint is very accurate. You brought up a lot of the same gripes I had with the movie, and while I enjoyed it because of the fanservice, I agree that there should have been a more focus on Ratchet and Clank.

Yeah...The games are much better. The humor is full of great double entendres and hidden jokes. Also the villains in this were so much worse than their counterparts in the game.

    • @Gamelover254
      @Gamelover254 8 років тому +31

Also yeah, in the games, Quark is totally evil at first, then by the third game he finally joins the good side. However, the interactions between the characters were much better, as Ratchet and Clank didn't trust him when he wanted to join due to him betraying them twice. Even then, he wasn't fully trusted till the end of the game. Also in the games, his arrogance is actually really funny, only because Ratchet is usually there pointing out how stupid he really is.

Well, I'm a gamer (specifically a huge fan of all the Ratchet and Clank games) and I did watch the movie myself. Hopefully this provides another perspective on the movie.
Up front: I thought the movie was okay. It had some great action sequences, showcasing the wacky weapons the games have and there's some good humor throughout (though, like what Cellspex said, the texting joke seemed forced). However, with a game, there's more time for the characters to interact and showcase more of the adventure, which is what the games did (both the original and the tie-in game for this movie).
The cliches that were used, I did anticipate, not a lot of people appreciating. This movie tries its best to parody it, but it feels like they played them straight. Quark, I will say, the tie-in game did him better justice because he is still an insufferable jerk, but you had an opportunity to shove it to him when he tries to put you in danger (see the world Nebula G34 in the movie tie-in game).
This feels more like a movie made for the fans of the games rather than overall movie goers. There's plenty of good references in there that fans will appreciate (the RYNO bit made me squee). Even still, the comedy made me giggle or give a hearty "HA!" but nothing really left me laughing so hard I fall off my seat.
On the whole, I like this movie purely for giving me an inoffensive good time with my childhood video game heroes, but I'd much rather play through the games again than watch the movie again. It's one of those unusual cases where the movie tie in game does much better than the movie. Fans will enjoy parts of it, but movie goers may proceed with caution.

"This movie tries its best to parody it, but it feels like they played them straight."
This is the single worst trend in modern media. I get that when people tire of cliches they want them parodied, and that parody is hard, but I wish writers wouldn't keep trying lazy parodies. Those just enhance all the problems the original cliches caused!

yea this movie is definitely made for the fans, which I was able to get enjoyment but yea the relationship between the two main characters is pretty much my main negative. And considering their interactions are actually nice its just strange how the movie decide to just split them up. (there friendship is miles better in the games and is the main focus in most of them)
So yea if you wanna get introduced into the series..play the game or at least watch the cutscenes as some of the games do have great story lines.

To me, the movie is only good when you are also playing the 2016 game at the same time. I pull out my laptop, go to an pirate website and when playing a segment of the game, I then watch a little part of the movie for a bit more context to the game.

I love the ratchet and clank games ! but this movie... i was like "wtf have you done guys". And the company who did this movie was supposed to make another movie based on another video game franchise : Sly cooper. but since the ratchet and clank movie failed ( maybe because they didn't put too much time on the relationship on ratchet and clank and it was too wtf and boring ) it's in high doubt. For the non-fan : ratchet and clank had forged their relastionship by the time they got together in the difficult moments and this movie failed it. my note : 2.5/10 : too much fan service, too much references and it didn't focus on the 2 main protagonist.
And just to say : the video game based on this movie is BETTER than the movie because it's a complete reboot of the first ratchet and clank video game and does a better job than the movie. if the movie was longer and focused on the ratchet and clank, it would have been a great movie but for me, this movie failed

Luke Tuke Actually, the TV show never premiered in TVs on its premiere date. The good news, however, is actually that the Sly Cooper movie is still in development. It’s just the fact that Rainmaker left the project in 2017. I hope Ilion Animation Studios (animators of Planet 51, Mortadelo and Filemon: Mission Implausible, and Wonder Park) gets a chance to animate the Sly Cooper movie.

As someone who played the game, and the game of the movie of the game... thanks Hollywood for forcing in the needless Celebrity Voice Actors instead of focusing on our main leads, seriously, did Cora and Brax contribute ANYTHING to the film, She's Mean, Brax says one liners, Quark did both better anyway.
One thing not addressed here is the villains, boy did Drek get downgraded in this. Sure, it's to set up Nefarious for the sequels. Well, maybe we should focus on getting our first film right so we can get a sequel first huh? Drek does barely anything as well, Nefarious at least seems amusing (Unsurprising since it's the voice actor from the game playing him) but since we have to spend time with Drek a lot, he gets lost in the mix and the Drek stuff is not good here (Also, what's with his design, compare the first game where he just had pure white eyes, much more intimidating, but intimidating wasn't the intention here for some reason).
And as said, we needed more Clank. There was not enough Clank in this film. We needed more of him as his wit helps balance things. Unfortunately this one of the films that doesn't want to shut up, so maybe that's why they pushed Clank aside.
Honestly, just get the Game, even the recent game of the movie of the game is really good despite being based on this and it's funnier as well. Skip the film, just pick up the game.

If you haven't notice, but there's a movies license game called Ratchet and Clank and many people who both watch the movie and played the game will say, "Play the game, you'll get a better experience with it." Especially since some part of the movies is actually cutscene of the video game which made it less enjoyable, because you want to play the game more instead of just seeing this movie.

Bit late to the party, but if I were to say my thoughts, I honestly think the movie should have been done in the same way as the first game. It's supposed to be a retelling of the first game's events, but it changes the tone and futuristic style. The Ratchet and Clank series was originally set in a more space-junk future, and the tone was somewhat dark. The humour was definitely crude and lots of adult jokes were somehow slipped into each game - even the titles of the games are supposed to be innuendos. But this movie tried too hard to be like every other kids' movie, which didn't make it stand out. Ratchet and Clank is a franchise which should always stand out.
I personally enjoyed the film on a guilty pleasure level, and simply because this series was my childhood, but it would have probably done much better if it retained the focus of the first game (how Ratchet and Clank met, how they fell out with each other and how they eventually reconnected) and if it actually resembled its source material's tone and atmosphere.

Specifically that an old victim/enemy of his comes back for revenge and Quark is forced to admit that it was his bullying that drove the guy mad. This made his arch actually mean something because we didn't see it coming.

I believe the reason why we are getting so many videogame based movies and in the future anime based is because of Marvel. Marvel studios proved to Hollywood that what they deemed as "minority fandom's" could be a major source of income. Translation, nobody took any of these concepts seriously until Marvel did it. As for the movie itself, from what I understand this movie is literally a cut scene...... no, seriously. This movie is literally made up of cut scenes from the PS4 game with very little added.

+Gungelion I think there's the element of nostalgia too. A large majority of markets in all areas are starting to use nostalgia as a marketing tool. If you look at what's been showing up on the markets for the past 5 years; a lot of it seems to be using nostalgia to gain interest.
Just looking at recent and upcoming movies:
      Ratchet and Clank
      Star Wars VII
      Finding Dory
      The Incredibles 2
      Sly Cooper
Zootopia (There's the element of it being a while since Disney made an anthropomorphic animal film)
      The Jungle Book
All these films are taking advantage of our deep love and childhood memories of old games and movies to gain our interest. It wouldn't surprise me if the majority of viewers for these films were adults who watched and played the old games and movies as kids.

Good review. I really liked the movie, heck i saw it three times in theaters, but you make some valid points about it. The game based on this movie actually fixes most of the problems with the movies pacing. It's understandable that you wouldn't like it as it doesn't really appeal to anyone but fans of the games. I do however think it is a step forward for video game movies even though I hate that this movie bombed at the box office, which was mostly due to the advertising team not giving a crap. But I really want to see more movies like it, films that stick to the games source material better.

Well apparently the really big issue here, for the gamers at least, is that the movie is literally the cut sense of the game all strung together with a few extra bits to help them flow better. This might explain some of the lack of character development as that stuff also tends to be woven into the game play to an extent.

  • @dntm123

+Venomous123 Okay, let's give you the benefit of the doubt here, and assume that your statement is correct... That STILL doesn't excuse this movie from just recycling the game's cutscenes and not adding anything new.
Not only is that BEYOND Lazy, but it leads to other problems like lack of transitions (we don't get to see Ratchet jumping through obstacle courses that are exclusive to the game, nor do we see important dialogue that took place during gameplay and not in cutscenes) and it gives people NO REASON to see the movie if they already own the Game, because this movie has noting new that wasn't ALREADY IN THE GAME.

I’m a Gamer and part of my love for this film comes from the Nostalgia. Not a ton, I didn’t start PlayStation till I was a Teen, but I still loved the games.
However, I don’t entirely disagree with your opinion. Something about this film just rubbed me the wrong way, and I couldn’t figure out why, but I think you’ve found my answer. Ratchet and Clank aren’t around that much.
But, as a fan of the games, I wanted to share some information that you may or may not be curious about.
I don’t know if you saw it, but there’s a Bonus Scene after the Movie where Dr. Nefarious is alive and has become a Robot, possibly foreshadowing a sequel.
However, it’s worth noting that Nefarious was always a Robot in the Games (Minus the one based off this movie) and I, personally, was thrown off by his new, Organic Body. Thank Goodness his Original Voice Actor was still there!
Another thing, The Game based off this movie actually has a World where you meet John Goodman’s Characters’ Brother and it’s somewhat interesting to hear what he has to say. For me, anyways.
I’m really sorry for the long rant, I’m a chatterbox!! Anyways, have a great day/evening/night and stay awesome!

I wouldn't recommend it to the gamers either! It's sad how this movie turned out. Although, given that the games are so old, particularly the first one, everything is outdated, so making a movie based on these games is probably the worst idea they'vehad (and honestly, I never even bothered playing many of the games after the first two because I was tired of them). I think the reason it was so boring was because they were trying to bring elements of the old games back for nostalgia's sake. And. Really. I kinda don't even get where they were trying to go with this movie. Incorporating "modern jokes" that nobody likes. I think this movie is best left with the 5 year olds who have never heard of the game. Just my opinion!

I'll admit, while the visuals aren't bad per say, I will agree it does have a very "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" look to it. It isn't quite up to par with what some of our modern CGI movies, though considering the movie came from the company that gives us all the Barbie movies (Okay, "Escape from Planet Earth" was fine, but I'd honestly consider that to be a better alien/space movie than this... thing). I'm not particularly familiar with the game series, and maybe the jokes are funny for those who actually play the games, but by itself... I'd rather watch the entire Ice Age series because I find more enjoyment because the main characters actually engage more...

I am a fan from the original games and series. And the movie... Is not bad, but is not good either.
Okay in a brief summary and for everyone to understand... Ratchet and Clank is like you give the looney toons, goofy and over the top weapons and just watch hijinks in actions.
The (original) game was started with Ratchet, a Lombax (in later games revealed to be the last of his kind) that is stuck in a boring world and he has the Disney Princess syndrome, he wants to have more have adventures and just get out of his boring planet. His prayers are answered when he rescues Clank, the last in a line of obsolete battle droids production (like Ratchet, it is revealed he was not badly designed, but his design was purposely created by a Time God-like Alien) So Clank wants to warn Captain Qwark (who is a REAL hero), because Clank came into contact with an Inf-bot containing Chairman Drek´s plans of creating a new Blarg home world. Ratchet agrees to help him reach Qwark as long as Clank fixes Ratche´s scrap ship. And so the adventure begins.
Throught the series, the star of the games are not Ratchet and Clank but the goofy and over the top weapon designs and also the villains. The villains have always been keys in this games.
But this movie I agree is no master piece, but heck i could haven a lot worse. The problems I have with the movie are the following:
    - CHAIRMAN DREK: In the original he was a real bastard, and his funniest scenes came because he was so evil and angry, he also makes a pretty badass final boss. In the movie the guy acts like a freaking agent that only cares about being more goofy than actually being a bad guy. Making him like this is really a bad choice and face-palm inducing. Not even Emperor Tachyon (who is a goo mixture of badass and comedic, because he has a Napoleon Complex) was this bad.
    - DR. NEFARIOUS EARLY REVELATION: If Ratchet and Clank ever had and arch-enemy or more like if the serie ever had a main Antagonist it would be him. Nefarious is the boss of being the funny/cruel villain. And in the movie that does not change and his updated is actually an improvement. However in the movie they reveal him his "squishy" form too early. This would be amazing as not many people knew how he looked like before he became a robot. But this a nit-pick
    - WHERE IS LAWRENCE?! For those who don´t know, Lawrence is Nefarious robot butler. He is like the Clank version of the dou, he is calm, calculating and I am surprise how much of Nefarious shit he had to deal with. But if he was in the movie he would have made an awesome comic relief, and will explain more how Nefarious survived the sun incident.

Speaking as someone who is both a gamer and a fan of the source material, I can say that as an adaptation, this movie was actually pretty decent. In a lot of ways, they actually nailed down the characters' personalities quite well, and the dynamic between them was done adequately. I'm sure it helped in no small part that Ratchet, Clank, and Quark were all voiced by the respective actors from the games, and the head writer of the film has in fact been a writer for multiple games in the series. I will say that most of the film only characters (basically everybody except for the main duo, Quark, Drek, and Nefarious) weren't bad in their own right, even though the addition of celebrity voices was clearly a failed attempt to draw in wider audiences outside of the core fan base which, let's be honest here, are definitely the ones who would get the most out of this movie. If you're a casual non fan, however, it's a fairly standard, formulaic time-killer that's sure to entertain the children, but may otherwise be considered somewhat boring for adults. Still, the action scenes were pretty cool, the performances ranged from passable to quite good, and it was overall harmless and inoffensive. Combine that with some clever references for the fans and a few in-jokes that might warrant a chuckle, and you get a standard but fun experience.
    I give it a 7/10 if you're a series. If you're, probably a 5/10.
P.S. That sequel baiting ending was kind of sad in hindsight as this movie totally bombed at the box office. Here's hoping they do a better job with the now delayed Sly Cooper movie.

It's why BvS isn't good. NO, just because you are a fan of the comics and can get all the references, doesn't excuse it for its execution and storytelling.
So no, the fanservice doesn't save THIS movie, and even if you were a fan of the game, that doesn't excuse its boring predictable story.

your review is pretty fair imo. as a fan of the series and who completed the new game before seeing it, it fits in nicely but feels a bit pointless. the movie wasnt suppose to overshadow and spoil the game plot and they wanted to really play it safe since video game movies have such a bad reputation. the kids in the audience seemed to have loved it and wanted their parents to get them the game, so it kind of worked on getting new young fans. personally i think there would be so much more to the movie if there wasnt a new game released the same time that have a interlocking plot that the game spoils anyways

Speaking as a huge fan of the series, the movie was a mixed bag for me. I did enjoy the Easter eggs and references, that joke with the Wilhelm Scream, having most of the original voice cast, and Dr. Nefarious, but it did have problems. There is nothing much that was challenging the titular characters, as well as having modern day references that make it feel dated (especially using the term "hashtag" in one scene), the pacing being too fast, and many of the supporting characters being flat and forgettable. However, I did enjoy it enough to not call it gosh-awful. It just wasn't the game changer for video game movies.

In the first game Ratchet and Clank don't really get along until the end. Clank wants to save the day and Ratchet just wants to tag along so that he can blow stuff up and explore the universe and doesn't care at all about saving anyone. By the end of the game Ratchet realizes he should get over himself and do the right thing. Ratchet was the one with the character arc in the game, not Qwark. Also, they made Ratchet a nerd in the movie but he was a jock/greaser in the game.

You might (or might not) be interested to know that this Ratchet and Clank movie was a reboot of the original game's story. In the original game, none of the painfully generic "Galactic Rangers" existed, Ratchet was a thrill-seeking mechanic who just wanted to explore the galaxy (rather than a well-meaning, wide-eyed co-nerd to Clank's cute nerd), Clank was pretty much the same aaaaaand the two characters actually got character development.
Ratchet actually became a jerkass midway through, with him and Clank arguing over saving the galaxy or getting revenge on the narcissistic goofball Qwark who betrayed and sold them out - less sympathetically than in this film - to Chairman Drek, the big bad.

I was like "Yo, bro theres a movie about Ratchet and Clank." And then we watched he trailer. We were Meh over it. Then we watched tne movie. Not in the theaters because we are not going to possibly waste our money. I was bored and then played on my tablet for a bit, then I watched it again, and I was like "Oh...I finally finished that...well that was meh". And my brother and I agree with you, Clank was literally the only good part of the movie. Coming from someone who experienced the games and then seeing the movie I was disappointed. I think the only good things about it is Clank, and a bit of the designs. Something I didn't personally like about it is how it doesn't focus on the friendship of Ratchet and Clank. That is literally what I was hoping to see in the movie.

This movie didn't even focus on it's main character
It focused on the green clothed IDIOT who deserved death more than the dead villain somehow
He caused the villain to turn evil, he kept making plans that failed, only cared about himself and his reputation, and even plotted with the villain due to his bruised ego! He's only stopped from literally MURDERING Ratchet because of a speech that at the end HAS to mention is reputation because that's all this jackass cares about! The movie had a few tolerable elements, but the focus on that guy completely RUINED any chance of it being good! I'd give it a 4/10 at best, a really weak movie

If you watch the movie alone it isn't The Godfather but if you play the game and watch the movie they both intertwine while still being able to stand alone. Just thought I should mention it but besides that good review 😃

OK, having played a few of the games in the series it sounds like this is going to be amusing but little else. Thanks for saving me some money.

to be fair, the fi;m is alrgely based on the new reboot game, and the original ratchet and clank did do the story way better in my opinion (first of all: spoilers, Quark was a villain) and the focus was more on ratchet and clank's growing friendship (in fact, ratchet wasn't characterised as a nerd in the original games at all and that was saved for clank....Ratchet was more of a jerky mechanic/gen x'er) and your criticism of the clicheness of the plot largely stems from it it borriwing loosely from the original game's plot, which did these mostly before the famous pop culture influences you mentioned (save maybe star wars)
In fact, I highly suggest finding a way to play the original ratchet and clank for yourself.

As a huge fan of this series growing up I was largely disappointed in the movie. I watched it with two people who only knew of the games through me and they spent most of the time asking me what the hell everything meant (we were the only three people in the theater). This made me realize just how incoherent the story and dialogue was to most people who hadn't played the game which would have filled them in on a lot of in in-jokes. As much as I love Ratchet and Clank I don't have a lot of affection for a movie that can't tell a story on its own merit.
I'm aware some people liked it, but personally it hurt me in the childhood.

I really liked the movie, but that's just because I'm a huge fan of the lighting effects, also the acting, and I'm just an overall nerd with the games

I liked this film, it is okay and very different from the games (I only played one of the games (the one with zombie-ghost-pirates as villains) or two if you consider the PS Move crossover with Jak & Dexter and Sly Cooper as a Ratchet & Clank game).
