  • Uncivilized Technology #2- Cutting & Digging (SHOVELS!!!)
More dirt has been moved than trees have been cut down. A standard piece of our kit, the shovels are as unique and specialized as the environments they are used.
Special shout out to ‪@csknives‬ for producing our recommendation of the best all around shovel: Spetsnaz!

The Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel has both sides of the handle tube welded together for greater strength in that area.
It is a particularly well designed tool manufactured from a high grade steel and US hardwood handle and is very well constructed.
The manufacturer also has the larger version called the Spetznaz Trench Shovel, which has a larger shovel head and a longer handle, giving much greater force and versatility to the user.

The Trench shovel is a good one to leave at camp for bigger projects while the smaller is easier to hike around. Great to have options.

They are great shovels. A buddy of mine turned me on to them 7-8 years ago and yes I have yet to damage it. It rides in the car if I'm not taking it to camp. Lots of fun to throw and easy to replace the handle in the field if necessary or if you just want a longer handle for a specific task.

The ability to unscrew the handle is handier than most people think. You can carve a longer tree branch into a full sized handle so you don’t have to dig on your knees. You can also carve a Y shaped branch into a handle and mount the shovel so it can be used as a pick.

I just purchased a Cold steel shovel from my local hardware store and I have to say for $30 bucks you can't go wrong! It's very well made! Also a nice feature is the skrews holding in the handle, that makes the handle way easier to replace if needed compared to most of the other trench shovels on the market that the handles are riveted on.
I would highly recommend the Cold steel for camping, hiking, riding your ATV anything that you can use a shovel for.

I rarely carry my axe anymore, this thing limbs really well, just this and a folding saw. It also makes great fire sticks if you stick it in a stump and pull the stick toward you. Faster than using my knife.

All shovels/spades should be sharpened. People forget they are cutting tools. It makes a big difference even if all you are doing is gardening work.

I shortened the handle to 10” which it makes it easier to chop and pack along. And even with the full sized handle you still have to get on your knees to dig a shallow hole. However, I have also pre-drilled two holes in my walking stick in order to turn both items into a long handled shovel. And with the Cordura sheath on the shovel it now becomes a non lethal self defense weapon. Just remember force must be reasonable response to the circumstances that you find yourself in and must be equal to the force being applied against you. Saying stay back if you believe the other person is going to attack you also legally establishes that the other person was the aggressor if they don’t. Striking hands, and large muscles if possible, which will usually stop an half hearted attack, but you may have to hit other bony areas or joints if their attack continues. Head, neck, solar plexus, spine, and groin strikes may be used but only if lethal force is being used against you. I’ve had encounters with snakes, wild dogs, a mountain lion, and two sows with cubs, and some questionable people on the trail the shovel has been a great camping tool and if needed as a defensive tool.

Brilliant on all counts. It's amazing how a simple tool can have so many applications and add safety on many levels of life on the trail.

Love my CS Shovel so much I bought 5 more.. Now I have an extra for me and one for each family member. I have the titanium head both small and medium and it is just too light to be usfull as a chopper. I would carry the titanium head as a backup in my pack and use it as a cooking pan. The russian made titanim trowel is really good, can function well as a spear head on a walking stick and makes a great digging stick.

For the record birch is not weaker than hickory, it is also not as dependent on grain structure as strength. The titanium shovels are actual Russian manufacture and not really available anymore due to political BS. Also, it appears Cold Steel no longer makes or sells replacement handles for these since the sell out.
Other than that, this has been one of my go to shovels for many years.
