Over the years I’ve wished I did this a bit better. I’ve also read comments with some better suggestions too. The video is still good. I think for smaller chips, this works. Saw dust with wood glue could work too. Wood filler can be too brittle with large chips. Glad this has worked out for you all these years. Got any suggestions for future videos?
to all germans: i didnt find Wood filler in my local hardware store so i bought a 500g Box of "Molto Holz Reparatur Spachtel" for about 5€ and it works perfectly well.
That works too. There are always multiple ways to do things. This method does not work on big chips for the reasons you mentioned. Out method works for small chips on the top surface.
True. Sometimes it's not a big deal, but not everyone lives in the USA where decks are cheap. Most places, outside the US, decks start at over $80. A lot of people want to make their decks last as long as possible. A friend of mine who is a pro vert skater was so picky about shapes. When he found one that flipped good he actually busted the nose one day and asked me if I could repair it. He could get free decks anytime, but this deck shape felt good. So, repairs are work for a lot of people.
If you have a longboard that has cut-outs for the wheels that has plywood that has chipped out completely, it might just be more economical to screw in a new piece of wood and add a plastic guard over it. In all of my custom deck's I dip the tips into colored silicone in order to prevent further chipping, also it looks really cool.
Dude. I got into an argument yesterday with some fools. They never heard of repairing a chipped deck before. I'm so glad I found this vid you made 11 years ago!! 🤣 You helped me blow their minds! Skate or Die bro. 🤟🏼
Of course it's only a temporary fix. All this is doing is extending the life of the deck. It's going to make it new again. Thanks you for the suggestion. I'll add to the description.
Also there is a little trick, that old time woodworkers use. Instead of using "Wood Filler" you can mix some saw dust, and glue. You will get almost the same result. =)
Yeah it works great too. Skaters aren't wood workers, so they'd have to get a saw and some wood, make saw dust, and go get wood glue. Since they need to get wood glue, it might be a lot easier to just get wood filler. That's why.
We have a video for this exact thing that has not been released yet. It will be out next week. In short, take the chunk out or any wood that has got between the plies. With a flat screw diver pry open the plies and squirt in wood glue between the plies. Clamp the plies and let them dry over night. Then sand the edge of the deck and reshape nose or tail with sand paper. Did the plies actually split in the center/middle of the deck?
Thanks dude! These videos are helping me ALOT! Im completely revamping my longboard and turning it into a bottleneck cruiser, painting it, getting new grip tape and adding under glow! :D
@@jay_maybe wow that person must now think that tp will save them from corona lol yes I am here in 2020 but helpful videos are helpful videos, the think is that person deleted his replies lol
Sorry for the late reply. Most of you r answers are in the video. The time it takes for the putty to dry is written on the container. Usually 24 hours. Do it won't effect the way you skate. And you can reshape the tail so it isn't square. Go over the grip tape for a couple minutes or when it becomes hard to peel off.
I love your enthusiasm, and you are right about glue and saw dust. Unfortunately, most people don't have wood glue sitting around, so they'll need to go buy it. They probably don't have saw dust that has been carefully placed in a jar that is now sitting on a shelf above the toilet. That's where I keep my saw dust preserves. They will need to saw something like a chair leg. So, buying wood glue and making saw dust versus just buying wood filler and a putty knife... wood filler wins. Sorry.
Yes, it can. This is not for big chips. This is really for chips that happen on the top ply that are a result from razor tail (as seen in the video). We have another video for fixing razor tail and delamination.
Thanks to Rat Vision videos and the brilliant guidance and experienced knowledge plus sage-worthy wisdom! I am really impress - I haven't skate since '94 and I am relieved to watch your excellent videos before buying any equipment. Plenty to learn...Cheers..
The spot where you put it might have been dirty/dusty. It needs to be clean. It can also break off if the chip area is big or if the wood filler has too much pressure applied to it. Check out our other video on delamination and razor tail. That might help you more.
GNasty the day I got my longboard I was going down a hill and needed to get off quickly because of a stupid car . So I hopped off after stopping with my foot and my deck decoded to go under a Fiat and get stuck. Resulted in a chip
Oh man, you fell for the classic sales trick. That's $20, plus tax for some states and shipping. Also, I would say "nope" to that, too. That's going to be the shittiest wood and lamination process they can use. It's going to fall apart faster than the repair job in this video. Also, he did the repair for $10, so still less than half the cost of buying that deck.
***** I got that deck for 23 dollars shipped to my door its hard maple and skates well I bet it hold up alot better than wood filler foh I didnt fall for shit 13 dollars more I got a brand new deck and they threw in grip you keep trying tho
I'm sure there are videos for this already. Undo the bolt and take out the bearing in a similar way that we show in our Remove Bearings From A Wheel video . Watch out for the plastic/metal spacer inside.
If its a big chip it might do that. This is just for small chips as seen in the video. If you have a small chip you might not have let the wood filler dry completely. It should be hard like a rock. This repair is really only good for chips on the top ply, not for the bottom. Check out our other video on razor tail and delamination, and see if that will be a better fix for your deck.
Rat Vision - Skateboard Tech Post one video of you doing a tre flip that doesn't look like shit and ill back off. Otherwise stop pretending you skate. You don't know shit.
Joseph McCann you are fucking stupid. No matter if he can skate or not, his videos are great and helped me to make my Boards/Trucks last about twice as long as i were used to. In addition, you shouldnt care if anyone can skate or not, everything is alright as long you have fun
You can try to peel back just the problem area. As long as the grip is still sticky and you can totally avoid getting any dust on it you may be able to stick it back on. Most likely it won't.
If the wood filler cracks it may be time to replace the deck. The wood filler only works for small chips. See our other video on razor tail and delamination for more tips.
Bought a board the other day that needs a repair, this video was perfect! Very clean tutorial, short to the point, funny!! And very informative! Thanks bro!!

If it doesn't effect anything you probably don't need to fix it. Take a look at our delamination and razor tail video. That might be a better video for what you want to fix.
This doesn't work for all chips because some are on the tip or edge of the deck. Sometimes the chip is too big and the wood filler might start to chip. There also can't be pressure put on the wood filler either. Meaning, if the tip of the tail has wood filler on it, when the deck hits the ground to pop the wood filler will chip or break free from the wood. Let me know if this is part of your problem, and if it's not maybe you can give me more info.
It depends on the chip. Usually a chip happens from razor tail, and once you get a chip it can get worse and worse. This isn't for everyone or every situation. If you don't feel you need to fix a chip than this isn't for you.
Why didn't I think of that? Duh! Actually the point I was illustrating was that although the idea of a pointed tube is a nice idea, it doesn't help to get the wood filler between the plies no matter how much you cut off.
his tips on gripping a board are fantastic for skateboarders. If you don't "go to town" one some gnarly 24 grit vicious or gator, cutting it will be among the hardest thing you have ever done. Longboarders will know what I mean.
It's a good idea to, but you can do whatever you want. If you ever have to take your trucks off or tighten them you are going to have to cut the grip around the bolts and that isn't fun.
I came back 8 years later to this video specifically to make sure I was doing this right. Thanks for many fixed boards.

If you have a hard time getting the filler out of the tube, you can take some scissors and cut the tip. Works for any similar tubular container yo
Thank you for the awesome comment. We really appreciate it.
can you also use your old grip tape for sand paperO___o
Check out our video for fixing razor tail. That might have the info you needed. This is not for big chips at all.
why not just cut the tube nozzle of the wood filler so its wider and easier to squeeze?
but like it does bc ive done it before....
The Potato King LMAO oh my god. dude you just take some scissors and cut the plastic yo. i mean it takes some effort but its not impossible
The Potato King of course it would, with a wider hole there's less resistance so it's relatively easier to squeeze the filler out

Every deck has plies/layers. The plies are veneers (technically speaking). We are posting a video on how to fix this within the next few days.

It's a good idea to, but you can do whatever you want. If you ever have to take your trucks off or tighten them you are going to have to cut the grip around the bolts and that isn't fun.
Probably with very fine sandpaper. It's a Penny. Is it that important?
