  • Was The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management Disney's worst attraction ever? No, but it was close!
You can follow me on Twitter idk: / gappingthemind
The original Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room was a classic, much loved attraction that existed in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and the first Disney attraction, ride, or show, to feature Audio Animatronics. However, in the late 90s the Disney World version, named Tropical Serenade, was suddenly closed and changed to a new version of the show with updated Disney characters. And it's safe to say that guests were not happy. In this video, let's take a look at the history of Under New Management, the awful update to the tiki room featuring Iago and Zazu, and a show many consider to be among the worst updates to an attraction in Disney history. But was it really so bad? Well, yes, but also no, let me explain.

the whole "iago and zazu try to make the tiki room profitable" angle, and ESPECIALLY clyde and claude becoming slimy talent agents, point to my biggest issue with a lot of the michael eisner-era park stuff: a weird self-obsession with skeezy hollywood shit as a source of "humor". this and superstar limo (and really california adventure as a whole) are two of the most obvious examples. like they thought everybody would find it as entertaining as they did, but it's... just not.

Yeah, I absolutely feel this. I think Eisner had the mindset of "I think this is funny, so everyone will find it funny". Not realising that some of the jokes would be less funny to people who didn't work in the entertainment industry. I know a lot of people have said that in his early years at Disney, Eisner would have a lot of his bad ideas reigned in by Frank Wells. I think Eisner has his strengths, but he also needs someone more level headed to keep his ideas in check

yeah, I think Eisner had a real over-obsession with Hollywood branded stuff in general (Superstar Limo, this, MGM, WDS, etc), and there was this expectation that so did everyone else. Which to an extent was true for the time, but the novelty of it all quickly faded away when the same theme kept repeating time and time again.

The first time I visited the Tiki Room was Under New Management. I was 5, knew nothing about the history, and enjoyed it not necessarily for the plot but because the new animatronics caught my eye, especially the Tiki Goddess at the end. When I came back 4 years later, I was confused about why they would change it. The "new" Tiki Room was nice, but it felt a lot less exciting than before. I kept waiting for that thunder clap that never came. Then I grew up and realized that was the point.

My Mom has told me plenty of how her dad would always be found at the Tiki Room whenever they'd visit the park and get separated. I'm told that my grandfather adored birds, and even used to have his own aviary and hand raised cockatiels, so I can imagine that the original Tiki Room must have been magical to him.

The far better version of this concept of combining Disney characters in the enchanted tiki room is The Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents "Aloha E Komo Mai!". The show is respectful to the original show it is replacing, the disney character involve doesn't talk crap about it (Stitch only wants to join the birds in their singing), doesn't try to be hip and cool, and is just a downright joy to watch. I’m 57 and was taken to Disney World in its opening summer in 1971. I have fond memories of “The Tiki room”. I remember escaping the brutal Orlando summer heat in the attraction. Under New Management was an attempt by Disney to get modernization points from one of its original older exhibitions. My opinion was that it was their way of stretching the budget and buying a few more years on the exhibit. I believe it worked initially but the parks attendees grew tired of Gilbert Godfrey’s voice over rather quickly. The older version may have been antiquated but there was a relaxing charm about it that still resonated with all age groups.

Paul Pressler, the 90’s park czar under Eisner, HATED the parks….Seriously. We got expansions like Disney Institute because he was convinced adults were “bored” and “embarrassed” to be there, and just wanted to drop the kids off while they went to shop and golf. As such, if a classic Walt-era attraction wasn’t pulling numbers , he always blamed the attraction for being too “old”, and wanted to either bulldoze it for a store, or update it with a current 90’s-00’s IP.
When we heard Iago screech “You boids have been doing the SAME SHOW for THOITY YEARS!”, we knew that wasn’t Iago we were hearing…

Hating it. Because that wasn't what I remembered about the birdies who sang pretty songs, the flowers, or the thunder.
I went back to the Tiki Room after a 20 year break from the parks and ah, bless. I love this old show. Wish they'd bring back the full one through, with the fountain included. I get why they haven't. But I wish they would. I've got a service dog now and I'm pretty broken down, but the Enchanted Tiki Room is still one of my favorite things at WDW. Plus, adding timeless humor over more dated references wouldn't hurt either. With Gilbert Gottfried gone, however, using Iago again is awkward in my opinion...

3:16 Red black and white was the old color scheme of Germany before the end of the Second World War. It was used in both the imperial flag up until 1918, and as the color scheme of the infamous Swastika flag from 1933-45. One might argue that this was Walt’s clever way to nod at these being the colors of the “real Germany.”

This show actually turned me off of Iago as a character completely, more than the Aladdin TV series or second movie had. The original show did look better than I remember. I think my memory of it was tainted by the horrible experience of "Under New Management." Around 2000, Disney released a special soundtrack open, which obnoxiously includes Iago's interruption of the original Tiki song. I was 13, and I did feel that the original stereotypes were outdated, but obviously a complete demolition was not what I had in mind. I would rather have seen the attraction I loved.

I remember in the late 1980's, the Anaheim version was... Showing its age. It was dingy and the birds chests would suddenly overly inflate, as opposed to breathing normally. We are talking weird "mating ritual" levels of inflation, lol. It was creepy, to say the least. It was obvious to an engineering mind like mine -that went to the room to set his mechanical mind aside for a bit of fantasy- that valves were sticking, timing was seriously off and some actions were missing due to damage and the need for refurbishment.
If as you said the whole thing was shipped to Florida as part of the parks grand opening, then they must have had to fix everything... Including the over inflating torsos that looked like the chest popper from Aliens was gonna burst out and attack the audience.

Honestly, the worst part is, this could have been a really fun idea if done right. Maybe it’s just the chaos goblin in my brain, but the idea of having a new version of the attraction be about the fact that it’s a new version of the attraction is very funny to me. I think if they had chosen a less beloved attraction, or even been less disrespectful of the original version, it wouldn’t have flopped nearly as badly. Maybe they could have ended with Iago acknowledging that the show was ultimately fine the way it was, with a moral of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I think for all those who want to see a Tiki Room overlay done right, check out Get the Fever. Get the Fever was in Tokyo Disney before the current Stitch one replaced it. I have no shame in saying Get The Fever I like more than the original because unlike the Stitch Tiki Room and this one, Get The Fever used elements of the original show and put a clever spin to it while still respecting the original show. If this UA-camr can make a video about Get the Fever, I’d surely be grateful:).

Disney offers behind-the-scenes park-related tours. One in particular is the WDW RR. The Enchanted Tiki Room is part of Disney's Historical Imagineering. It can be a centerpiece in Imagineering know-how. And serve as a behind-the-scenes program to inspire new developers, incorporating art, storyboarding, research, development, construction, physics, lighting, color, music, sound, and execution to finalize the presentation.

I remember visiting the Enchanted Tiki Room when it was "under new management" in 2009, when I was five. I also remember my mom telling me it was a calm little show that wasn't overly exciting (though, now I know she just meant it wouldn't over-stimulate my twin and I). And then we went in to see the show, and I remember thinking how crazy it was. We went back to Disney World in 2016, and I was fully expecting Iago and Zazu, but I was met with the original version of the show. In the nostalgic sense, I do miss when it was under new management. But I know my view is largely clouded by nostalgia.

I never visited the Florida park, because I hardly ever had the money. I however visited the one in Anaheim and spent as much time in the tiki room as possible. there's a drink counter outside, it sells sandwiches and a verity of fruit drinks. I spent my share of time, using the park transit system and I even took notice of how much the park, as far as Disneyland had changed. space mountain is still around, it's just more of a building now, then a mountain. also, the space adventure ride, has improved.

I was looking forward to seeing The Enchanted Tiki Room because it was one of the attractions Walt had given a bit of behind the scenes treatment on The Wonderful World of Disney. It started out lovely, but then Iago started his infernal ear-splitting screeching. By the time it was over I was disappointed that Uh-Oa's curse hadn't been more dire. I'm still sad I never got to see the original.

I saw the original tiki room for the first time this year (now age 27) and was blown away by how much of a subtle, calm and visually and musically gorgeous attraction it is, I am so relieved they revived the original.
