I know right. Dude wouldn't know what to do without. Thats why I memorize all dimensions of my machine and remember where I'm at and above all where I'm going next. Boom. Next cut
Having a sense of depth helps , like buddy says know your machine 👍 these new techniques with lasers are great for small jobs bud also make it a picky long day lol
Exactly dig that by knowing the height of your bucket or find starting grade then maintain it that's a challenge. I can't imagine digging without hitting rocks that's also another challenge. That looks like kids camp challenge
Nice job Tom! crazy how clean the material is down south compared to New England. When you use the 2D grade control can you over shoot your depth or does the machine stop itself from over excavating? I was impressed with how quickly the machine got tied into your selected grades.
No challenge when your not controlling boom stick and bucket manually. You can’t dig below a certain point, at my work we don’t have any of this. We dig by eye and check grade manually, I’m learning excavator the last few years but without gps. We have operators at my work dig an entire basement without a grade guy and we will check it when he’s done digging and he will be out an inch side to side. This stuff in the video is difficult to an extent because he can still rip utilities out of the ground. If you have access to use this equipment for digging jump on because in 25-30 years it will all be automated.
I'd like to try this. I run an excavator daily installing septic systems. I'll do 500 square feet, 3 feet deep in about 1.5 hours. Leveled within a half inch or so. But we don't have fancy beepers or computers. Just dig and then verify with a laser.
A man in the hole builds relationships with skill , machine and co worker. It is very hard to beat the progress that will come to play after a few jobs under your belt with the same package of course. Some ppl don’t measure right and some don’t know the opportune times to get in and out of the dig areas
How many times can you take a teaspoon of dirt out while tunneling. Keep bucket in the trench, flip dirt into back of bucket, repeat until full. Helps to push dirt under utility to your side to easily grab when you back up.
Not at all the discredit what this guy is doing because he is a good operator no doubt but I would really rather see this done by eyeball and have speed be a factor
Hey, Awesome video mate. You look super competent. I'm thinking of undertaking excavator training, as a career change. Is there any advice, tips or general pointers you may be able to think of that would benefit me knowing, prior booking a training facility.. Anything at all that comes to mind, you may be able to think of that perhaps will help me ... Thanks very much
As a grave digger in Appalachia, I run SAE rather than ISO because often we are operating antiquated equipment and personnel. When you are a one or two guys operating various equipment around the job site it just makes sense not to have to switch control operation.
I work with Ryan @ RockStructures. He told me you guys are good friends and I've been a fan of your Vids bro. See you in St George in March!! 👌 badass operator
I want work there in your company if you have work there for drive loader so can you tell me please I was drive loader 2016 from continue now can you give me contact number
Not bad, I retired before lasers became a "standard". Never used grade control, either eyeballed or had an oiler on the ground. #IUOE Locals 150, 12 & 3. Union Pride !!!
You obviously have never used GPS.. My uncle said the same thing till he got auto steer on the combine , he will never go back to hand driving equipment again..lol
Cool video brother , I love to dig ! 29 yrs of digging and about everything else with a excavator , not wanting to sound negative and it's a good tool to have around but GPS on a excavator takes away from a operators ability to see grade and feel grade . Like the guys videos though
Nicely done. Not exactly a practical application though. Had this been in the street, that water service would've been 6' either direction. I get this is a staged course, but not how you should expose a live service in the real world. Trench to full depth up to a comfortable point, take the top off the marked service, then allow the laborers to slot trench by hand, in 1' increments. Also, clean up those 2 feet of work surface between the trench and your spoils. Don't want your top man to roll an ankle humping pipe to the trench.

I wasnt competing. I was just there to help cover the event with Caterpillar. Ive been very busy with the excavation business. I should have lots of videos coming soon
That sounds like it was fun. I know what you mean about being busy sometimes it’s hard to make videos when you’re trying to get something done. I look forward to seeing more from you. 👍🏻
This was so painful to watch. That’s some of the worst trenching I’ve ever seen . Come to Australia and I’ll show you how it’s done . Long smooth strokes and flatten out the bottom of the trench after battering the soft edges.

Great work
I love reading the comments from the experts that would probably never compete in this 👏
because if this is really a "challenge" its a joke, i get my greenies to do this.
@@KJGomezR yes
I’ll compete and make this guy never want to hop in a Excavator ever again .
If the CAT challenge ever comes to Australia hit me up I’m in

It’s gps
Doing it by eyesight is more of a challenge yes by feel is fun but eyesight is great
But, he’s got the technology. Why not use it and be more efficient.

When you work with operators that skilled everything is so easier for everyone
Really makes the job go 10x faster when an operator is efficient
just started running one in a rock quarry.funnest thing ive ever ran.
we need some snow clearing vids!
They will be coming stay tuned!
Running an excavator without true excavator controls should be a sin
Glad you posted a video! You would of won if you entered the competition too.
Good work 👍👍
New machines are very nice. But i have done this in a 235b and using my eyes only to many times .
235 B. Those machines never quit, you should take it to the antique road show😆
@@waltermaxwell310
They are a great machine . spent a ton of hours on one as well as a 977L and 977K. Track loaders.
977k I haven't been on one of those in 18 years
Freaking excellent great job man
Great skills, enjoyed watching this 👍
that was a sweet dig. Nice job.

This machine will stop you from over digging but I didnt have that option turned on
I see ppl use Trimble a lot? Is that basically the same thing for CAT?
Its definitely not a challenge of speed. So what is the challenge of how does the winner win?
I have now adentify my mistake thank u sir ❤
Good job dude
Thank you firends very helpful
God after trying to watch this guy. I realized how good I really am.😮
I'm looking for training for excavator and material for construction.
Help plz
what are u using iso or sae control
Not bad! Did this make it to the finals? I think I may have to sign up…

It still takes skill to not dig below the level set on gps it doesn’t automatically stop you dipper and boom
You’re using grade control! I can do it without. 💪
Your taking far too much off the first pull your just making a mess
Facts I was like what the heck lol
Yeah cut the crust off first
I think the same
Exactly what my first thought was, gotta scarify that top layer first, then pull in lifts, creates a cleaner job
Haha Jesus.... 😳🤯 and he is using a comp! Dude is green as they come! That vest is cleaner then his “trench”
I seen you tap that utility line honestly good work just slow down I gotta remind myself all the time to slow down

You did very well, but that was easy.
Straight ditch to grade is apprentice level work

Why the hell did you film this in Portrait Mode ??????
Could any one tell me wat beeping is is it depth of dig or GPS ???

Who runs backhoe controls on a trackhoe?!

Grade control is for people that can't grade worth a shit. Hence the words"Grade Control". Finesse and eye for detail is all you need to have
I know Thomas murphy well he came second in my he finals in vegas
If that was a pipeline you just killed everyone.
First off trench has to be re done no one is allowed in it by regulations. Pile of dirt is too close to the trench. Do it well next time
Don't know what to say.... 😅 I like using the teeth or the cutting edge more... And when I say more.... I mean all the time

Need me talk why there working and tell ever one what they are look at and doing have 36 years as a heavy equipment operator
Like the pro you are nice job as always

Great job operator, esp near utility "danger zone"!!

Real challenge would be driving and the machine with your feet while digging and also not using the laser.
Utilities 1 feet deep? 1 foot deep......singular not plural
First place prize is a tour of a CAT facility 😂
All the legendary operators are too busy making money to compete in this
