Worst part of my golf game is watching way too many golf channels on YT and trying to integrate every tip into my swing and game! Kidding aside, I’m so glad Matt that you are back to providing tips and tutorials! Your videos about $300,000 memberships do me absolutely no good as I know I’ll never even come close to being able to afford that costly of a membership!
I start golf late in life (55) and started with Interlock grip. After a few months I realized I had a heavy grip on the club and was not getting any lag or whip at the bottom of swing. So no distance or launch. I tried overlap at the range one day just to see. I instantly got more lag, whip at the bottom and a little more distance. I've never tried 10 finger but now that I've been away a bit, I should. This was very informative. Thanks.
Matt I have been following your site since I've began golfing 2 1/2 years approx with much pleasure. Your comment , "I should have never changed the interlocking grip. It was my best grip", did not fall on deaf ears. I have tried to copy and use the Hogan tips for the past year with some success. I have been using the overlap method. I survived a plane crash in 2010 with 4 plates, 16 screws. I felt your regret in leaving or altering the interlocking. At 69 with 90% right and approx 70% left hand/ arm use contact I felt unbalanced with sides competing R&L a bit. SO.... I heard you loud and clear! I wondered? So I took the new slight interlocking tips of yours in workout then to the range. BINGO! Both hands, wrist, and arm with body are working together smoothly. Wow now I have a team instead of teams hindering each other. The interlocking fit like a good glove! Thank you Sir! Thanks a million. My 15-16 hcp should drop a few strokes now. Man am I happy! 👍🙂👍
Years ago I had trouble with my top hand rolling over and shutting the club face. An oldtimer told me that instead of interlocking the index finger on my right hand (I'm a lefty) between the pinky on my left hand I should interlock it between the ring finger and the middle finger. Well that worked. It locked my top hand in place enough to prevent me from rolling the top (left) hand over. Eventually I went back to the regular interlock however, occasionally the dreaded rollover happens and I get the big time PULL. So I saved your video and will review it again once the 5 month frost delay is over. CHEERS
Great video. I do interlock my fingers and I obviously interlock to deep because my left pinky is no longer straight. I would love to see a video on possibly how to take divots with irons. I struggle with that.
Wow! Video is full of golden nuggets! This morning focused on the pinkies, and the thumb sliding into the opposite palm. During my swing I tried to keep a uniform pressure on the thumb palm touch point. I think I just learned what is mysteriously described as touch, and knowing the speed and pressure of the thumb palm touch point I learnt club path and club head speed. Did I explain that at all well? The result was - I was getting amazing directional and distance control. 1 foot left chips to the flag from under 50 yards and far more confidence.
Use interlock and your 3rd tip was amazing. I tried it and now have complete control of the club and posted 6 scores in a row that have been my best six in a row ever. Indexed has dropped 4 strokes from 18 to 14 in six rounds. U da man!!
Grip was/is one of my biggest issues. Always trying to figure out what works the best for me. I started interlocking this year. I will apply these tips! Thank you
This is exactly the video I needed to see, I just switched back to an interlocking grip from an overlapping grip, and was definitely interlocking too deeply.
Good stuff and great tips…I was an interlocked forever and then switched to overlapping when I had some issues with blisters on my fingers from playing in 100+ heat for two weeks in a row and I didn’t want to stop back in 2007, and didn’t even think about changing back until recently. Now I’m back to interlocking and I feel like I can control and secure the club so much better…BTW, dig those Jordans! I have the same model with the pony hair style! Love them!
I was taught the vardon/overlap but switched to interlock when I got down to about a 4 handicap… not a huge difference but it felt a lot more comfortable.
Would love to see a video on posture and ball placement. For me, I never can decide how far to bend my legs. I keep switching it up as well and it makes me very uncomfortable standing over the ball!!!
I have a major consistency issue with hitting out of the fairway. I constantly waste 290+ yard drives because I hit it too fat on my approach and dig up a ton of ground in front of the ball. If I’m hitting from the rough or a soft lie then I get great contact so I’ve almost started aiming for the side of the fairway as opposed to dead center. Love the channel and the positivity!
Also the advantage of the interlock over the others is that it greatly keeps the elbows together during the swing for solid contact. Also eliminates hooking/slicing & off-line shots. When Nancy Lopez & Mickey Wright practiced with the wide elastic band above their elbows it kept their elbows together. On page 49 of Hogan's 5 Lessons book, it also shows how important it is to keep the elbows together. Although he used an overlapping grip, he never lost the feel of keeping the elbows together throughout the swing. However, us mere mortals are not able to ingrain this position. Keep your elbows together on every shot during a round & you'll think you belong on tour.
Can you give me the perfect setup for how far the ball needs to be and how much I actually need to bend down in posture over the ball? Sometimes I feel like more upright is better and then I watch some videos of guys playing that are WAY over the ball and I'm not so sure so I inevitably keep switching it back and forth and can't find consistency.
Drop yo ass down 2 inches. Keep your weight in your heels. And the neighbour looking over the fence metaphor is pretty much spot on. As for ball position: I like to have the butt of the irons pointing to the left of my junk. My arms pointing at a "5:00" angle. Not 4:00 - not 6:00. 5:00. So as much distance as I need to get the club head next to the ball at address and the butt of the club pointing next to the twig and berries / cameltoe. Driver, Woods & Hybrids pointing straight at the knackers again at a 5:00pm angle. Good luck!
I’m an overlapper Matt. My game is a frustrating at the least. Inconsistent ball striking so my score reflects it. I hit a fade generally but then I’ll try to adjust and I’ll it a push right. I make adjustments throughout the round but there is always one aspect of the game that kills my round. That my friend is why golf is a four letter word. Love ya brother
Thanks for the reminder. I used to use interlock until I got away from it because of slight nerve pain in hands. Trying it again, it seems to be the best at keeping my grip solid from address to finish.
Different situation obviously, but I am recovering from a broken scaphoid in my dominant hand. Injured in early July, out of the cast about a month and trying to play again. I find the interlock absorbs the shock better…more comfortable. How I learned as a kid, got away from it. Now we’re back full circle. I hope your pain goes away and your drives are long :)
I was having trouble with my grip and I now see that the problem was my right pinky finger was too far wrapped around my left index finger, which was causing me to grip the club too tight and making my hands stiff during my swing. This tip has put my left hand in a much better position at impact, thanks again
I made the change two years ago after a lifetime of using the overlap grip to 10-finger. I did it as an experiment when I was speed training with the driver. I then realized that Midsized Plus 4 Grips vs Standard grips allowed me to swing much faster because my right hand now fully on the grip could apply more power. I then regripped all my clubs with the bigger Mid Plus 4 grips and I added one club's distance to all my mid and longer irons. Getting your right hand fully on the club is the future of golf in my opinion.
i just played around going from the interlocked grip to the 10finger. and at least with my irons I seem to hit them straighter and get better distance control. I am playing a round later today going to give it a try. if i can get there early may try this with my driver and woods.
Excellent video, I have used the interlocking grip for the 62 years I have been playing golf. The palm issue you mention can easily be seen by the wear on your glove.
I would really like some help with getting 20 yard chips to check up and stop. I have the control on fuller swings, but need some help with the short flops and controlling their distances. Really been making me crazy as i seem to have a lot more with these shortened winter golf shots
Great Video! I one thing that I have found to help me, is the right hand thumb and forefinger should touch each other. This may be wrong but it helps me to do all the other things right.
Thanks for the grip tip! I'm a 6 handicap and have use an interlocking grip for many years. I figure if it is good enough for Jack Nicklaus and Tiger, it's good enough for me.
3 great interlock grip ideas ! My issues are twofold: my stance at the tee, despite a right blended knee for driver upsweep, and ball positioned to my left heel, I cannot consistently drive the balls in the air for distance, second is my backswing behind my head thru follow thru seems to attack driver to ball on a chop angle, shanking the ball short. When I align my left forearm more directly down the shaft and tighter to right forearm…it helps. But as a senior, I get fatigued or have arthritis hand and hip or back pain and it throws my swing off. Any advice is appreciated
Sounds like me I can't get off the tee, so then my day is ruined no pretty high flight to watch, balls just running through the green now chip back on & you got it a high score
Started 10 finger, went to interlock and played great, broke my pinky and to play sooner while I healed I went to overlap, felt weak but eventually I mastered it, tried to interlock for fun and it felt weird. I agree interlock for most is the best, it feels the most connected to the club.
Good video! Thanks for pointing out a part I wasn’t sure about. My name definitely isn’t Jordan Spieth, so I’ll be taking your advice on thumb-palm placement.
Thanks for review. I switch back and forth between baseball and interlocking. I can’t bend my pinkie because I have Dupreyens Contracture. My biggest struggle is club speed, I’m a senior recovering from broken shoulder. But, my biggest issue is green reading. I have very poor depth perception and I have hard time identifying low and high spots on the green. Very good lag putter, but struggle with line on 6-10 foot putts. I loved your 45 day challenge. Would love to see how you would translate the short game portion to indoor simulator.
I lose the majority of my shots off the tee. This typically manifests itself as 3-4 triples on my card, because I'm hitting 3 off the tee. I've never developed a "fairway finder", even when dropping down to a fairway metal to try to minimize my miss. This is all compounded by my driver clubhead speed @ ~115 mph, which puts my misses deep in trouble rather than the rough or edge of the tree line. My index is 15.7, and I'm routinely 10-12 over on 4 of 18 holes. The rest of my game is pretty serviceable.
Thanks, I just saw this one. After 45 years of holding the club wrong I have been practicing this. On the bottom hand how much pressure on the club should the thumb have?
I am trying a version of the ten finger grip. My right hand is fully on the club and my left forefinger is overlapping my right pinkie. So far, I feel I have better contact and more power at contact.
I have always used the interlock grip. Back in the late 1990's there was a lot of instructions recommending the overlap grip. I tried it at the driving range and it never felt right for me. Great video. Really glad there wasn't a shower scene. lol 🤣
Great grip discussion; achieving consistent carry distance with uneven lie chips, pitches short irons needs development! Same ball all season also helps consistency!
Just started golfing about a month ago. I’ve been practicing a few days a week at my local driving range just to work my clubs and get a good feel of direction and power. I feel very comfortable with my irons 6, 7, 9 along with wedges. My driving off the tee is ridiculously off. im either hooking hard or slicing hard with an occasional straight drive but usually has a lot of loft but now power.
Been interlocking since I was 6, that is 59 years. Never fell into those faults. Biggest struggle for me is ...Weather. We have had big wind, rain and snow over here in the UK. Can you arrange for some of that warm, balmy Georgia weather to drift over here please?
I use the overlap grip but when in the rough I use a ten finger grip to stop the grass from grabbing the club and shutting the face. As a lefty I tend hit my 9i and wedges to the right of the pin. I have checked my grip and club face and they appear to be pointing at the pin.
I use interlocking now. Used overlapping before. Interlocking gives more of a hold on my club, better control. Overlap gave me more swing speed, but less control/accuracy.
Is there a correlation between the interlocking grip, or any grip for that matter, and the grip on the club? The reason I ask is, with standard golf club grips, I feel like I have to strangle the club to keep from loosing it during the entire swinging process. So after watching your good golf club grip review video I recently purchased +4 gripes with hopes of having a more relaxed swinging experience. Which leads me to the question above.
Welllll looks like I've been doing number one for a long time. Wow. Had a game assessment with a coach this weekend and he didn't catch this and I'm a bit pissed at that. I also have my right thumb at 12 o'clock on the club. Any tips to fix this? Hopefully it's not to hard for me to adapt.
Hi Matt, I just returned to the game in August of 2021 after about a 25 year layoff. I played when I was younger but found skydiving and golf took a backseat. I used to have a baseball grip but in my return decided to try the interlock. Not for me! I feel as you do I have more stability with the 10 finger grip. I know you have the teaching by video program via the app. I don’t have the disposable income to enroll in something like that at this time but do you have an option to view my setup, swing and release one time?
All good points about the interlock grip Matt! I've used this grip for over 30 years. For me, it feels as though it connects my hands more. I will definitely keep in mind not to go to deep with the index and little finger. Keep up the good work!!
Got an interlock grip myself..work well. If you could do a video on “correct take-away” and practice techniques in order to get that right 🤷🏽♂️ have a tendency to snap wrists at the start of back swing 🤔
I’ll give you a tip, feel your hands rotate inwards as they go round your thigh. Practice that feeling until you take the club away keeping it on your hands and not rolling it inside.
Hi Matt, my problem with my game has got to be I have no driver in my bag , when I hit it , it goes very high and right. But I have a 2iron in my bag and I can hit that a lot better though. But it looks weird having a bag with just iron in it though.
Thanks for vid. I'm a new golfer and been really practicing hard this last year trying to get my game to a reasonable point. My 2 largest struggles are 1. My miss is usually a push. No slice, but just a high push that loses me 15-20 yards and obviously right of target. 2. My driver. It's gotten a lot better, but my miss is still a big push slice. This is what is holding me back the most. I lose a lot of balls right on the course. It's odd because I know I must be coming over the top but it doesn't feel like it and I don't slice my other clubs. I think I'm swiping across the ball really late in my swing. Don't know if you've seen that before or have some suggestions. Any help is appreciated!
I struggle right now with driver distance. I’m carrying 170-200 yards and I carry my 3 iron just over 170 so it’s a real problem. I know I’m hitting down on the ball but I can’t seem to get a handle on it. Ive hit 260-280 with my driver before but that’s just a couple of times. I feel like as I’m gaining more distance with my irons and hitting my wedges better my driver is just getting worse and worse. At least it’s fairly accurate though! Except for the pull straight left occasionally
nice video- use the interlock and don' have any of the fatal mistakes. But would love to see some vids on the on chipping and the dreaded yi-yi-yi-yips ;-).
Man this is my current problem I need go address so I have a lengthy question, I mashed the ball long and straight with a interlocking grip, then took a year off and could not hit a ball period and noticed my interlocking grip was creating serious slices , so I went to a double over lapping grip which is alot weaker perhaps and I have that pop bottle grip you where displaying where the trail thumb is on the front side of ghe grip . So no I have no stability at the top . But does it make sense that a slice every single shot with a interlocking grip more so hitting down with irons for sure
I got a question not holding the grip related though... why when changing the grip you need to change the tape as well? Is it so it holds grip in place better or some other reason?
I made the change two years ago after a lifetime of using the overlap grip. I did it as an experiment when I was speed training with the driver. I then realized that Midsized Plus Four Grips vs Standard grips allowed me to swing much faster because my right hand, now fully on the grip, could apply much more power. I then regripped all my clubs with the bigger plus four grips and I added one club's distance to all my mid and longer irons. Getting your right hand fully on the club is the future of golf in my opinion.
I struggle a lot with my driver. I'm great with wedges and short irons (struggle a little with the long irons). I just can't seem to get the driver down. I either have a terrible slice or I'll go the complete other way with I guess you would call it a pull hook. I'm a mess lol
I use interlock but my right pinky ends up hurting pretty bad after a full round. I don’t think I do anything mentioned in the video but I might have to re evaluate 🤔
My set-up to my target needs help. There are times when lining up to target my body is not lined up correctly and when I hit the ball it goes straight where my body is lined up to. Not to target. I was told by a friend that my eyes are playing tricks on me. Hope that makes sense
I use interlock and lately have been experiencing discomfort in my pinkie knuckle area. Any ideas why? I find overlap too unfamiliar and can’t make a good swing
I used interlock grip for years and tried using the overlap grip and I gotta say overlapping feels way more comfortable and natural and feel like I have more control through my club release.
Just recently switched to the overlap grip and it feels so much better and natural, still struggling massively with my iron strikes, still topping the crap out of the ball even while trying to focus the low point a head of the ball! Love the channel
I have to align my club head at the toe of the club in order to hit the ball with the face of the club. Some how my swing pushes out an inch or so during the downswing. That’s my big problem. Suggestions?
Worst part of my golf game is watching way too many golf channels on YT and trying to integrate every tip into my swing and game! Ive actually had a really hard time with my interlock and my grip in general. I actually started using the 10 finger grip and i love it!

Would love to see a video on posture and ball placement. For me, I never can decide how far to bend my legs. I keep switching it up as well and it makes me very uncomfortable standing over the ball!!!
Best explanation of grip with this video and lead hand video regarding pad placement! Thanks!
I have a major consistency issue with hitting out of the fairway. I constantly waste 290+ yard drives because I hit it too fat on my approach and dig up a ton of ground in front of the ball. Posture over the ball should be like your standing looking over a picket fence not sat on a bar stool
Drop yo ass down 2 inches. Keep your weight in your heels. And the neighbour looking over the fence metaphor is pretty much spot on.
As for ball position:
I like to have the butt of the irons pointing to the left of my junk.
Good luck!

Started 10 finger/baseball and switched to interlock 6 months in..def help take the hands out just a bit..
Bro! I took ur advice and I was hitting better shots with all my clubs. Thanks man.
Thanks for the reminder. I used to use interlock until I got away from it because of slight nerve pain in hands. Trying it again, it seems to be the best at keeping my grip solid from address to finish.

Matt, would like to control the amount of curvature on fades and especially draws on approach shots to greens.
Great video! It’s never been explained that clear or easy to me before, great job thank you!
Excellent video, I have used the interlocking grip for the 62 years I have been playing golf. The palm issue you mention can easily be seen by the wear on your glove.
Im now an interlocker, and i do both the first and third mistakes! Opps!!. Biggest struggle for me is face control, im all over the place.
Great video. Didn't even realize I was doing #3. Keep up the great work. Best golf channel out there!
Consistent ball striking is my biggest problem. Thanks for your awesome videos.
Thanks for the great tip. My grip didn't feel right and I now know it was because I was "jamming" my hands together.
Like your approach in teaching. It's not preachy or military. Great job!
Great stuff! Would be nice to hear about the speed of the back swing.
I would really like some help with getting 20 yard chips to check up and stop. I have the control on fuller swings, but need some help with the short flops and controlling their distances. Really been making me crazy as i seem to have a lot more with these shortened winter golf shots

awesome timing was just wanting to try new grip.
my golf weakness is driving i need better control strikes and stop the slice.
Used to play with interlocking grip now 10 finger grip. It works for me, less slicing, more distance and flight. It work for me

Loving the videos Mr SG. Some advice on how to stop topping the ball would be great 👍👍👍

I have the overlap grip.
I lately have struggled with my chipping around the greens.

Lovin' the Whistling Straights T-Shirt. Gotta shout out the local course
Watch the Ben Hogan video very demonstrates the most important thing in a golf swing.
HI how do I fix inconsistent driver hits I seem to either hit middle low or middle toe or middle high. is it a swing path problem?
I just switched to interlock actually and I like it a lot.
I struggle with the driver
I really
Needed this video. I interlock and my right hand get way to open.
I use interlocking now. Used overlapping before. Interlocking gives more of a hold on my club, better control. Overlap gave me more swing speed, but less control/accuracy.
Great Video, I use interlock but golf Cross handed!
Nice shirt! Planning on playing there next year!
I have been struggling with generating club head speed lately. I don’t think I am releasing the club but flipping way too much.
I started to use the 10 finger grip, I just seem to have more control of my clubs. I don't hit has far but I have beater control of my shots
Where at the golf ball do you aim at address and backswing? I've had several people tell me several spots, so I'm just wondering where you recommend.
Have you tried using a stronger grip?
@@ProGAMERzNOT I have gone back and forth between a little stronger and a little more neutral. I'll give it a go again next practice session.
Always gold man. Keep grinding. 🏌🏽👍🏼
Great videos, thank you.
Great video and love the Jordan's
Thank you so much!!!
Interlocker here. Changed my game for the better.
Enjoyed the “ that guy “cheater videos . Always enjoy your take on the game. You make lessons fun.
I am an interlocker, so this vid was great for me. My downfall is bunker play!!
nice video- use the interlock and don' have any of the fatal mistakes.
I use separated grip due to arthritis in my wrists. It allows more flexibility. Any tips for that kind of grip?
I got a question not holding the grip related though... why when changing the grip you need to change the tape as well? Is it so it holds grip in place better or some other reason?
Rock’n the Js!!!! Love it.
I tried the 10 fingers grip years ago and started hitting longer drives. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I still use the baseball grip.
What do you usually score on 18 with baseball grip
Thank god I’ve got a good grip ha. But I still struggle with the transition of weight to the front foot before starting the downswing.
Hello, when I enter lock my fingers for some reason I pull to left as a righty golfer. Why is that? Grip to tight?
if you hit a 60 degree in your setup would it still hit the white screen ? I'm looking to do an indoor setup
You should be up to 500 subs man you are a gem
Interlock grip works well. Usually hit the ball fairly straight. Where I struggle is in my alignment with my target.
Thanks Matt love ya buddy
Has anyone tried the double interlock grip? ...pinky and ring fingers interlocked....
I switched from interlock to overlap grip because I tend to put a lot of pressure on my grip and my right pinky would flare up in the joints.
