- So I drove the Kia Picanto. Surprisingly, it's very very good. The drivetrain pairing and calibration, the suspension tuning, sound proofing, fit and finish, equipment levels are all very accomplished.

Apologies to everyone who commented with a Kia in their sentence. This is because earlier on some genius at Kia decided to hire cybertroopers to myself, Kon, Autobuzz and Roda Pusing's youtube channel to comment Kia here Kia there. Every single car review they come in and say something about Kia. So I banned every single comment that consists of the word 'KIA' in my youtube ... and now i forgot where to fix it .... gimme some time ya apologies.

In Europe, the Picanto goes against the Fiat Panda, Ford Ka, Toyota Aygo and Skoda Citigo, the Rio goes against the Fiestas and Polos.
I own one of these and it is my 2nd Picanto, the first one being one from 2014 and did 190k of mostly PJ to Genting with it.
Other than the usual routine maintenance the only thing I replaced were the shocks, brakes and annual replacement of all 4 tyres. (The person who bought it was one of my juniors and it is still driven every day to Genting from Gombak)
I did look at a Jazz and a Myvi as a possible replacement but both did not deliver on the driving experience I was looking for in a small car, was looking for comfort, good handling and one where after a long commute I did not feel fatigued. The downside is the lack of space indeed but I rarely ever carry 1 extra passenger let alone 4 adult passengers.
Not sure how exactly many justify that the Myvi has more space but if you were to go 4 adults in a Myvi it isn't going to be any more comfortable than 4 in a Picanto.
Would like to share my view on CarPlay or Android Auto. The main reason I use them is Waze navi. It replaced the stock built-in Navi (if the car still come with it) as it has live traffic. And the map is always up to date. Unlike those conventional map built into the car, which is slow and outdated usually.
Secondly, it takes away the distraction of keep playing the phone when you drive. Or having to operate multiple devices. And to operate on the small(er) smartphone screen. I like the feature where audio will cross fade when there is prompt from Navi or phone call.
UI of the car apps are usually come with big buttons and simplified to keep operation in car easier. Hence the “dumber” version.
Maybe it’s just me having the habit plug in the phone and just leave it when driving. Pioneer AppRadio is a very good alternative before there are CarPlay and Android Auto.
Waze is currently beta testing CarPlay support and should roll very soon.
Agree, I also use Android Auto to 'read' and reply whatsapp msg with dictation. I can easily flip to the car MMI and back easily with a button. I have virtual cockpit showing the car built in map and the MMI showing Waze, one zoom out at 1km and the other zoom in at 100m. To me Android Auto is very usable.
I agree with you completely. We have a Picanto with Android Auto, which is actually way more useful than the over the hills MZD system in our Mazda. If you use it for its purpose Android Auto and CarPlay are very good (albeit sometimes buggy) intergration tools.
Is there much difference in terms of ride and handling between the 2018 model and the 2014 model
Definitely a good alternative if you prefer a budget foreign car
This car might just be 50k but it drives similar if not better than some B or even C segment car

Android Auto and CarPlay is a safety feature, instead of looking at your phone for navigation, less distraction.
Isn't a "dumbed-down version of your phone" actually GOOD and safer for driving though? I don't need to have all my text messaging apps, TnG banking, Shopee & Lazada apps, I just need navigation and a bunch of music apps with simplified functionality so I don't have too much clutter while I'm moving around on the road. The dumbing-down is a feature, not a bug. Not trying to be a hater this is just my two sen
It is a good car and I felt that it could be a good sell if the rear space is larger. Btw the Iriz 1.3L actually has the almost same price range like the Picanto.
And I think my iriz 1.3 handles a bit better than the picanto.
@@NokiaHumanForm yes the Iriz handles better. But the Iriz also have lousier tyres. Anyone who buys Iriz should swap out those tyres to enjoy the great handling
Picanto goes against the Up! The Rio goes against the Polo and the Cerato Hatch / Cee'd goes against the Golf.
I tend to disagree with your statement that Apple CarPlay is rather useless.
What does one need while driving
1) GPS function: provided by Apple map, Google map and in near future Waze. Chose whichever you want.
2 ）music： I use Spotify which provides all the music that I need
3) phone function
4) messages: will read out message while driving. Even whatsapp messages。
What are the functions that the car entertainment unit that is not provided by Apple CarPlay during driving?
I have just bought one prior to Sept 1st with no GST as a city car for my use in Penang. Value for money is the main reason. Sure it is a bit smaller in the back but for only 2 of us, not an issue. Horses for courses。
I think the "dumbed down version" of the smartphone is actually GOOD while driving. Who needs the entire smartphone while you're driving? No thanks. Just give me navigation and music. I don't want to read my texts or write emails, I'm here to drive.
And for not needing to plug it in because Bluetooth exists...that is valid, sure. But an in-cable connection gives demonstrably better sound quality than Bluetooth. Although for most customers, they won't care and it isn't a big deal for them anyway.
Is it good if we stereotyping the cars by its brand?
Forgive me if I'm wrong but some styling cues of the picanto remind me of the iriz. The big mouth, the projector headlights, the shape of the rear doors, the concept where the plate holder at the back is placed at the bumper.
Iriz have a better looking exterior profile. Protons have always design good looking cars apart from the current Persona and of course those ugly ducklings that came from other car makers (Juara, and that ugly ... forgot its name but looked like Audi A1 one)

Cozy, swift n chic is the best way to describe this compact city car experience..A-segment car cladded with upper segment features, what a bargain~ btw i definitely agree with u bro bout the apple carplay things..I rather put the phone holder permanently stick to windscreen with wire down to the charger and have waze on, especially when I’m in a hurry~ cheers.. 😎✌🏻
Bobby, I really respect your knowledge about cars but I would just like to correct you on a certain topic, in Europe the Golf is going against the Kia Ce’ed and the Rio is going against the Fiesta/Polo and not the Golf like you said earlier. Cheers!✨
Apologies I totally forgotten about the Kia Cee'd and my brain filled in that segment with the Kia Rio cos the rio was practically the size of a Golf. :)
At 23:50 it looks like the rear headrests just slide? It doesn't click into place like most other cars do?

I use Apple Carplay everyday. Waze can opearte in Apple Carplay. Plus with Spotify.
Isn't it Picanto in the A-segment like Axia, and Volkswagen Up? Of course it cannot compare with the B-segment cars like Myvi and Iriz. As you said, Bobby, Malaysian car like are spacios, like Axia which make me forget how small an A-segment is.

Not sure, because a small turbo would meant turbo lag, moreover this 1.2 was tuned so well to deliver immediate low end push ... very satisfying to drive around city
I own a Turbo model in korea. It's a totally diffrent car. Was mind blown when 1st drove it. Mine also has a ECU chip tune with full cat back exhaust. It's a beast

i owned the first picanto when it was launched. good car but service was horrible. it was my first car and i got it with 400KM on speedometer, called the customer service and was instead said they were 'testing' it and questioned back, why i was calculative. then service and warranty claim were horrible. imagine a 4th or 5th service was around RM400-800 for a small car. then warranty claim, nothing was done until i emailed to Korea directly, the second claim never came in as no one called and i did not bother to call. guess what, even their manager who test the car with me after i make some noise, told me not to buy these rubbish. quality was good but to compare with japan, still lacking. and in the end, the value of the car....end up selling a 11 year old car at RM2.5k. if you got money to spend, buy...else just get a myvi. at least u can travel around in suitcase instead of this, you cant even put a large suitcase.
Btw Bobby you forgot to highlight some key features - Apple Car Play and Android Auto intrgrated to the head unit, and also the dynamic reverse guidelines for the reverse cam, dont think any B segment car has that
Ya almost all korean car have that reverse guideline which is some of japanese and all malaysian car are not
For a car such small, reverse cam actually is quite useless haha
@@zch8561 maybe but you cant complaint if they include it. Better than nothing. And it still have its uses, eg detecting a small kid or animal walking at your rear which you cant spot through the rear window

Unfortunately, many Malaysians still don't connect their phones to the BT system of their cars. Many still insist on holding on to the phone to talk and to text. So, car makers can take out these features anytime soon.

PIcanto / Morning GT line version would be more premium, don't know it is available in Malaysia or not, but I did test drive GT line model in HK, it was awesome 👍

Actually Kia Picanto is an A segment car which compete against axia. myvi competitor would be the Kia Rio.
Android auto and Apple CarPlay makes it safer because it limits the phone so that you don’t look at the phone and drive
The imported Picanto GT and X line in Taiwan comes with AEB as standard. There's a Sime Darby badge at the back of the Taiwanese model of Picanto too, I wonder did they imported them from Malaysia?
In malaysia distributor is naza. I think sime darby were distributor in taiwan.

Used android auto.. Never go back weih... The Google Maps feature and 'OK google' that allows u to find stuff along your route to your destination by talking to your car... Eg: gas station and food places.. Cheap car no sat nav maaa

KIA should just get rid of Naza and come in themselves. The aftersales is their archilles heel and Naza is only focused on their high end segments. With proper management this car and perhaps even KIA as a whole should be a decent competitor
