- Akira Kurosawa's brilliantly conceived re-telling of Shakespeare's King Lear magically mixes Japanese history, Shakespeare's plot and Kurosawa's own feelings about loyalty in the epic masterpiece, RAN. Set in 16th century Japan, an aging ruler, Lord Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai), announces his intention to divide his land equally among his three sons. Hidetora's decision to step down unleashes a power struggle between the three heirs when he falls prey to the false flattery bestowed upon him by the two older sons and banishes the youngest for speaking the truth. That ruthless betrayal ultimately drives Hidetora insane, destroying his entire family and kingdom. Deep human emotion and outstanding acting combine to create one of the most acclaimed foreign films of all time.
Akira Kurosawa's epic Ran celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, so we've selected 35 scenes in 35 seconds.
I watched this film again today which is third time I've watched it. The humanity embodied in each character, the patience and confidence on each shots, and the great sadness and compassioon embodied on the director's view... They are terrific. It's human condition, and condition of the world we are living in. Searching for suffering but not peace.
You've seen it three times? Yikes...
RAN,is not a movie,it's philosophy
Wher to watch it please tell me I downloaded it but couldn't get the subtitles
He might be the greatest film director ever.
he is. the only other one i'd consider equal would be John Ford.
One of my favourite films
Glad to hear it ;)
Every single scene worth a wallpaper
37 seconds of cinema beauty
Akira kurosawa is so talented, I wanted to watch this movie online but the subtitles were never working, but luckily my dad had a long lost dvd of it and we watched it together on the TV, what a nice experience
ngl im jealous

The greatest and most beautiful film ever made... also one of the most brutal, unflinching and soul-draining anti-war films ever made. Kurosawa is the GOAT
i couldnt get into this movie as much as his older samurai movies but i need to give it another chance

Uh
The one HUGE mistake of his movie is to show how good the youngest siblings is the best and the eldest the worse child. In real life, it's the total opposite most of the time.
Maybe, but it makes sense that it's the eldest son that gets to be the head of the clan, initially.
Not really.
Based on what you dingus
Not really, i know a few people who are the oldest and they went wayward. The older ones usually are the ones the parents couldn't control.
