Excellent...love it and hope everyone that's interested in drumming watches this video. Hearing this reminds me once again how fortunate was to learn from my late Dad. He was a great musician and music educator. Many, many years ago after returning from taking some students to a summer music camp/clinic in Indiana, Dad told me about meeting a fine young drummer that had just left the school. That was Jeff Hamilton. Wonderful words of inspiration from Adam and Steve as always. Thank you all for sharing and to Hudson Music as well.
Guess I'm not the only one using some of this "extra" time at home this year to fill in some of the gaps in my brushwork. Thanks for putting this together!

I was 17 and got a call to record a commercial. Was asked "can you play brushes?" me- Yes!
Never played brushes, didn't even own a pair. Went to music store to buy a pair and the salesman was the booker and bass player for the gig! Oops. lol.

Fantastic! What a wonderful opportunity to learn some philosophy and technique about brush playing from four old (but not as old as me at 83) drummers! I really sat up and listened closely when Steve Smith brought up Vernel Fournier's brushwork on Live From the Pershing because the brush pattern he does on Woody 'N You has baffled me forever!!! Steve, if you see this would you PLEASE tell me how he executes it...!? Is it that technique of rolling one brush on the snare head that does the trick??? I've practiced single brush strokes to try to get it up to speed, but could never come close, so if anybody knows Vernel's secret, I'd be forever grateful if you'd share it here!

Good stuff to think about. Great conceptual ideas here. Often I think of brushes as a meditation, especially when I’m warming up: just create a texture for longer than is comfortable with repetitive motion. It’s clear there are lots of approaches; explore on your own, put in the time, and learn from as many others as possible.
Jeff Hamilton is the current King of the Brushes. What a bad ass.
