***** No. The 100 most used words have a higher probability to be used in a random sentence. But I'll meet you halfway, you'd understand 75% in a sentence and probably understand the meaning in 25% of them.

Rolf B sorry, it seems not true. 100 words seems too few to reach 50% in any language, although one might consider a good base for a start or for the so called "emergency", "survival" skill. It means to speak a language well enough to lodge, transport, eat, shop, etc. One may make mistakes, but ok, will not die of starvation. It also depends on how many structures the learner manages to use, and how well, it's not only about number of words. The most important is to keep steady on studying and practicing, then one day you suddenly notice that you're getting more and more fluent. Greetings from Brazil.

i think i read that in English the 100 most used words in normal average online text account for about 30%-50% of the words used, but you wont understand the context well unless you know more.. i think with learning around 500 words you can understand a quarter or a third of casual day to day speech and your brain peaces the rest so you feel like you understand 50%. just imagine with my comment now, most of these words would be in the top 500 most used words in English, just think about how much you would understand.. I am learning German now and I am nearly at that 500 or so mark. even though i probably know a bit more than 500 words.. i haven't grasped all the top 500 most commonly used words, and my grammar ability is still lacking. du verstehst mich?

I can finally count 1-100 in German!! This has helped a lot, the only problem with German Numbers is that you have to read the second number in order to pronounce both numbers which is really difficult for an English speaker!!
When I look at 52 - I have to think 2 AND 50 so I get zweiundfunfzig but maybe it will come natural one day after I stop learning to deconstruct it and come natural!! Very helpful video.
