My local team is the Portland Thorns. One match pre-match, the scoreboard read “THORNS” for the local team. The visiting team, instead of their name, had the Old English/Old Norse character “þ”. I commented “wait, the Thorns are playing against themselves?” Very few people got it. Those that did really appreciated it.
My brain really *really* wanted 1,101 to be binary for something... I had the right idea (different number system) but Roman Numerals never would have occurred to me.
That's interesting. I never thought of the name Liv as a roman numeral because they're normally all upper case. I also don't really look for roman numerals where they're not expected. As one might do.
Given how many clues Tom is giving in this episode, he REALLY doesn't seem to like the difficulty of the question lol. great episode as always with the LLE team!!
My immediate thought was that it was the total score between the two teams across all their games ever. But that goal difference would be astronomical!
Finally one I got immediately!! Not a football fan at all, but I went to Roman numerals straight from the gate. Liverpool was obvious, but I had to guess Manchester City because I couldn’t think of anything better for MCI. It is a bastard of a question, but sometimes you just luck into the right thought path…
I'm going to echo others and say that until that last sentence I also thought it was some kind of joke that was actually being put on the scoreboard intentionally to be nerdy, but that last sentence suddenly reveals it to be a perfectly normal scorbeoard display and it was just how Sergei chose to interpret LIV - MCI.
If I understand correctly, the scoreboard does NOT ever have the actual characters "5" and "4", right? It has "LIV", which is fifty-four written with Roman numerals instead of in decimal notation. The _spoken_ question is therefore perfectly accurate (although the text at the start of the YT video is questionable).
Oh yeah! I thought the scoreboard-managing people were having fun and set the scoreboard to LIV 54 / MCI 1101 as a nerdy joke, but no, it's just the fact that LIV and MCI are displayed... That makes more sense now.
@@FZs1oh thank you! I also had to listen/ see this one three times to understand that it wasn't some kind of joke of the scoreboard guys but the way the reader read it 😅
Why did Brad Pitt's name appear on a US college basketball game broadcast that he had nothing to do with? It turns out that the scroll line was listing upcoming games, and was using 4 letter abbreviations for the schools. Bradley University was playing Pittsburgh University.
I had to listen/ see this one three times to understand that it wasn't some kind of joke of the scoreboard guys but the way the reader and question making Sergueï read it 😅
Yeah, I was real confused until Tom's very last sentence where he says the question editor just saw "LIV-MCI" on TV and thought of Roman numerals. Up until then I still thought it just said the Arabic numerals on screen _and_ LIV-MCI and I couldn't wrap my head around it.
Interestingly there isn't a common set of 3-letter acronyms for teams - Arsenal for example can be rendered as both ARL and ARS depending on how prudish the broadcaster is. Man Utd also tends to be rendered as MU on Sky
I figured out midway through that the numbers mirrored spell out "LOLLYS" (nevermind that I was slightly wrong), and was convinced that was somehow the answer.
Tom literally gave them the answer at 5:50 (I did not know this before, but I got it instantly when he said that)... and I was so frustrated that they were not getting it when he gave them the answer
I'm watching this while visiting my parents, and when I worked this out I made a noise so weird my mum came in from the other room to check I was okay (this is totally a humblebrag and I don't care)
the moment Tom said "one thousand one hundred and one" my first question to him would have been: "is it 1101 or is it 13?" but I was thinking binary not roman numerals
SPOILER - 3:05 I got one! My thinking went "Well, it's definitely not my team (Man City) because I don't recall this ever happening. Oh wait it is my team!" EDIT - Delighted with this one 10/10. All future questions to be on sports please
Im at 3:45 and I think I got it. Is the shortened version of their teams’ names Roman numerals for those numbers? LIV vs MCI. Liverpool vs something. Not sure as I don’t follow soccer.
My hypothesis hearing the question: the score board is showing LIV and MCI because they're abbreviations for the teams' names or something along those lines, which is 54 and 1101 in Roman numerals. Edit: hehe :D Roman numerals my beloved
Guess at 0:30 Is the time 11:01 on the fifth of april? or 4th of may? Edit At 5:53: Oh! roman numerals! MCI = 1101 and LVP....Well, LV = 55...How do they get it down to 54? Edit at 6:32: Where did i get LVP from?
No, but the scoreboard doesn't read as the numbers, then. The question said 'the scoreboard already indicates 54 and 1101' not 'the numbers 54 and 1101 are already up', so that's not right, as that says that those are in numeric form at that moment
As soon as Tom said "Nope" when Tom was reading out the digits I figured it out. It took me googling to figuring out what the actual end result meant, but that's because I've never watched soccer
. . . With how you insisted on the wording, I was expecting 1000, 100 and 1 to be separate numbers. I didn't realize the thing until you spelled out "L-I-V".
Liverpool vs Manchester City? liv / mci? Is that right? It was Tom specifying it was "one thousand one hundred and one" instead of "one one zero one" that triggered that if so.
Watching on TV, ahh... For one peculiar reason, if you're familiar with NBC Sports' Premier League Coverage, this won't work in the U.S. The 54 is stable. But the other number is off by one. This is specific to the games shown on TV with NBC Sports' own presentation. And considering the teams involved, you're pretty well assured of seeing it on TV!
The end was kind of disappointing... they did not show the numbers, they just shown the thing and Sergey saw the numbers in it? It would have been cool, if they really were showing the numbers
@@thespankmyfrank that's exactly what I figured from the ending, that it just shown LIV and MCI and just the question-setter interpreted it as 54 and 1101 Id would have been much better, if the person responsible for the board wrote 54 and 1101 on the board as an inside joke. That's my point :)

Yeah, I started by thinking 1101 was binary for 13 and maybe for luck reasons they put it in binary.
Yeah, I quit using Roman Numerals when Binary came out.
I assumed it was the never walk alone
I heard him emphasize "one thousand one hundred and one" and went "Wait is it one thousand, one hundred, and one? Like different numbers?"

3:48 is what made it click to me, this was a great one :D

My first guess without completely revealing the answer: Liverpool vs. Manchester City?
No, but the scoreboard doesn't read as the numbers, then. The question said 'the scoreboard already indicates 54 and 1101' not 'the numbers 54 and 1101 are already up', so that's not right, as that says that those are in numeric form at that moment
This is also why LIV Golf is called as such, because it's over 54 holes (18 short of normal, non-Saudi golf)
5:53 those are roman numbers aren't they...
I do English cryptic crosswords, so got this one immediately.
So... are there any other teams whose 3-letter abbreviations make legal numbers in Roman numerals?
