You're absolutely right about drinks in Britain, generally we don't have ice, and when we do, we'll only have a few cubes in the glass. From my experiences in the rest of Europe I'd say that Europeans on the whole take a similar little-to-no-ice approach. :)

One of the reasons for little or no ice is that it affects the flavour of the drink. Too much ice and the flavour and smell of the alcohol is lost. I personally don’t take any water or ice in my whiskey.

The "Two Ronnies" show was a mixture of sketches with them both in, Ronnie Barker doing talks to camera (like the mis-pronounciation sketch and this one), Ronnie Corbett doing a joke sitting in a chair (check out one of those) and a big musical number at the end (also woth a look) It also started and finished with a news room scenario. It ran for 16 years from 1971 to 1987.

As a teenager I lived in Santa Monica for 18 months, and quickly noticed that if I asked for a coke most of the cardboard cup would be full of crushed ice with a dash of coke! I took to specifying no-ice so that I would actually receive a cup of coke (which was cold anyway), which got me a few funny looks. 'Cheap limey' they probably thought!

The term "Dutch courage" came from the Dutch soldiers who fought along side the English soldiers against King Louis of France armies were given rations of gin every day and they were practically bladderd before they went into battle and they wasn't scared because they'd be drinking gin, in London in 1730 there was 7000 gin house in London and people on average drank 16 LTRs of gin each year, it's nickname is "mother's ruin" because women used to get pissed on it and start neglecting their children, there's a famous drawing/Painting by William Hogarth of drunken men/women drinking gin, I think the painting is called Gin Lane that he did In 1751, oh yeah gin was originally called "Genever" because it's Latin for juniper, the berries used in the brewing of gin

A gun and tonic used to be called a medicinal drink. The tonic water used to, the better quality still do, have quinine in it. This was to act as an anti-malarial drink. Quinine is extremely bitter and by putting it into tonic which was an accompaniment to gin a very palatable drink was concocted. This was why the British in India created the drink and would always have a G&T. It enabled them to avoid getting malaria.

Normally - in the UK - you always have ice in a g & T. However there is a guidance to avoid ice in many "hot" countries as careless ice production can hold many microbes and contaminants to be avoided. Thus - avoid ice in anything if you doubt the cleanliness of the location. !!

@@TheRealSquirrel Another point to consider is that too much ice will "water down" the flavour of the drink. A couple of ice cubes is a good balance to cool the taste whilst maintaining the intensity. In America it is a case of "would you like a drink with your ice??" Rather than having some ice in the drink. After a while you end up with a glass of slightly flavoured water.

The American Way with drinks seems to be as you say: pack 'em with ice. This is not the Yorkshire Way, because (a) your taste is impaired by low temperatures, so they can sell you shit and you won't notice, and (b) if a glass has ice in it, and you pay by the glassful, you are paying alcohol prices for water. The Yorkshire Way: “See all, he'r all, say nowt, 'Eyt all, sup all, pay nowt, And if tha' evver dus owt for nowt, d'yit for thisen”.

If you can ever find it, there's a short film from the seventies starring Messrs. Corbett and Barker, as well as some other notable British comedy actors called "Futtock's End". There is no actual dialogue, but there is voice acting. It's difficult to describe. It is all based around a group staying at an English Country Manor called Futtock's End for a weekend. The breakfast/hangover scene is hysterical.
It was written by Ronnie Barker. Almost entirely without dialogue, the film includes a musical score, sound effects and incoherent mutterings. It can be found in its entirety on Dailymotion, but UA-cam has it split into 25 short pieces

A cut glass whisky glass or a long thin "bacardi glass" 2 cubes of ice and a quarter inch slice (half) of fresh lemon (we grow our own) pour slowly a third of a glass of gin over the ice, add slowly, tonic to just above the half glass level and serve it to your guest with the remains of the tonic in its small Schweppes glass bottle. Home alone; an old cracked kitchen glass, ice and lemon and slop in the gin and tonic in quick succession before turning the ice towards you and starting to slurp (or some might schlurp oi-vey), the gin past the cubes of ice now numbing your lip. If you think that it doesn't taste quite right repeat the process! For Her Magesty, NOT TONIC!! a third gin, two thirds Dubonnet one good cube of ice and a good half slice of lemon on top. Stir with a swizzle or long handled spoon under the floating ice and lemon and you do the same with the ordinary gin and tonic ( I have an old 1960s hot chocolate spoon, it's ideal.

When the English order an alcoholic drink, they expect alcohol, not ice.

You never put I've in drink unless it's requested, and never ever in a whisky especially a single malt

People don’t like too much ice because they think it dilutes their drink. (I know it doesn’t, my friend who was a bartender has explained it to me).
Another reason for Europeans not wanting ice may be that they don’t trust the water in America though

I think if you go to a proper cocktail bar you'll get ice, but in pubs if you want ice they'll give you ice, if you don't ask for it you won't. I'm not sure I'd class a gin and tonic a cocktail, it's a spirit with a mixer, but then you will anyway know this. I guess different spirits like this might or might not demand ice, but on the whole I wouldn't have a cocktail in a pub unless it has a reputation for serving them. I think as well the glasses drinks like gin and tonic used to be served in quite small glasses so you couldn't get much I've in there even if you wanted, now it's that they are served in those big cocktail-like glasses, but that's quite a recent thing so I think it depends what kind of establishment you are in.
Generally standard pubs aren't or at least weren't at up to serve these drinks very well, the staff didn't know how to make fancy drinks, they just pulled pints (often hand pulled) and served spirits by just pushing the glass up to a bottle mounted on a wall that had a device attached to measure the shot measure and then just topped up the drink with the mixer, nothing fancy, not like the bartenders in the States!!! None of this juggling bottles or even free pouring. I've not explained this very well. You should do a video on the differences, there must be videos out there you could fact to on here!!!

Are you a secret Squirrel though?
I subscribed to your channel about a week ago, it was the Fred Dibnah, steeple Jack reaction videos that I first saw, if someone likes and can appreciate the things that Fred was doing, well in my book you have to be a half decent fella.
Glad you like the old 70s and 80s stuff that most of England loved.

      @@TheRealSquirrel awesome,
I did a similar test a while ago, my father is not a fan of the Scott's, turns out that we are a mix of viking, Scott and English, it's so funny to see his face turn red with anger, especially when I tell both my teenage sons about our Scottish heritage lol.
