  • Called Gematria, the system of Jewish numerology is extensive. Christians today do not have the same concern for the use of numbers or letters with numerical value that our predecessors in the first century CE might have had. However, it is good to know the basics because the same number do come up in scripture again and again, and knowing their significance we can find a deeper meaning in the Gospels.

    Interesting presentation - thanks.
Recommend E.V. Bullingdon’s ‘Scriptures and Number’ - written long ago but completely fresh on the subject.

I always felt Christians were a bit too literal and missing important clues or underlying messages in the scriptures. It's like they believe the number of fish, loaves of bread, etc were just randomly chosen to be multiplied and throw into the Bible.
I never quite understood why none would care to think of those numbers in another way. They just say "believe" or if you try to figure it out you're toying with the devil... but never would care to explain why those specific numbers were there... just blindly read and believe.

Agreed. Unfortunately we have several centuries where it never occurred to Christian thinkers to ask Jewish thinkers if there was something we should know or something missing in how we read scripture. Some of us are working hard to fix those oversights.

now you know there is more to scripture; as Jesus said even to His inner circle of disciples, search for in them is eternal life, we need pray and meditate further on searching the word,
