- Kathryn Graves was walking down the street in Manhattan Saturday afternoon when she was met with a racist tirade.
The Black Yale graduate student says she was just walking near 47th Street and Third Avenue, listening to music, when she heard someone yelling. She didn't think anything of it until she stopped her music and realized that a woman was directing racist, anti-Black remarks at her.
The student said the stranger approached her, spewing hate speech, and that's when she started recording the tirade.
The fact she’s homeless and has the nerve to be racist baffles me.(the point is she should worry bout ha self nd not the color of someones skin💀)

I am a social worker who works with the homeless, as well as people with mentally illnesses, and people who are addicted to substances. A non racist homeless person would be sickened at what this woman said. I know people who have mental illnesses that would never say anything like this even in psychosis. I also work with people who have addiction who would be disgusted by this woman's words even when they are high. The truth is what is in the heart comes out of the heart. Mental illness, homelessness, and addiction doesn't make racists. Many people are all three things but are not racists. A racist heart makes a racist. So please don't insult my clients who are without homes, struggling with addiction and mental illnesses by comparing them to this racist woman.

@@agustindejesus7398 my degree is in law. I went to law school, but I have been doing social work the past 6 years. Prior to that I was an attorney and will probably go into that field again. People are not going to say racist things around me if they want me to help them. One old homeless man that I worked with was a racist, but he soon was arrested for shooting at some neighborhood kids for an unrelated reason. So the old man has a new home. It is called jail. As a reminder if a person doesn't have racism in their heart they are not going to spew racist words even if they are high on drugs or drunk. When you are high or drunk you are going to say what is already in your mind and heart. The substances just takes the person's filter off.

Iam moving to Germany. I dont know if they are racist, but i lived there 9 years and those were the best years of my life. Everything was so peacefull. Never encounter any problem when traveling, in the neighborhood...no where. If there are racist people in Germany at least they dont show it.

Apparently nothing anyone can do if someone is being racist or yelling or even screaming at someone unless they get physical. As in the case of that homeless black dude that was threatening people in the train by saying he was going to kill them and you had a white dude get up and strangle him. Cops said unless he placed his hands on someone , they can yell all sorts of obscenities, even be racist all they want and you can’t do anything unless you want to go to jail. I can kinda see their reasoning behind it. I don't think they meant to say it as "and she's one of the good ones" but more to try to hammer home the idea that racists shouldn't judge a book by its cover. That there's no way to determine who someone is as a person from their skin tone.
I honestly don't know which method might bring about greater change. I would say, they shouldn't have mentioned her credentials. Because, I see it as, who are you trying to open the eyes of. Racists, or American moderates who are thinking like one. I think their way tries to convince racists more, but that opens far fewer eyes to the reality of what is happening. So, I think more good would come from not mentioning the credentials, but it's all speculative. Both could help progress, in theory.

This is a common and revealing bias by media editors who for some reason can't rest their reporting on patently egregious violation of human dignity and thus feel the need to garnish it with some unrelated credential intended to connote the "worthiness" of the assaulted victim. The answer here is quite simple; respect human dignity.

You don't make progress by hammering away at the people that already understand these things. You do so by showing society who they really are. But, if you do too much all at once, then people get defensive, and go to their safe spaces. Where everyone just confirms what they want to believe so they don't have to change or acknowledge they're not the good guys.
So, again, where do you start? Do you start by convincing the most racist among us, that their biases are blinding them? Or do you start with the moderate Americans, who often times don't think they're racist. Who think they're not being biased, so you have to show them that they might not be racist, but they're acting or thinking like one.
What the media is doing isn't okay, but... It is progress if they are able to get the openly racist to start thinking that way. It's not enough, but it would reduce the number of extremists. The way of doing it that you're talking about, would convince the moderate Americans, but would be too extreme for the more severe racists, and will cause them to become defensive instead of opening up their mind. Even the moderate Americans will become defensive and close off their mind if you come at them too harshly.
So, the question becomes, where do you start to create the greatest amount of progress. I would argue that it's the way you are talking about doing it. I think that would change the hearts and minds of the greatest number of people, creating the greatest amount of progress. I also would worry that people that are starting to become more progressive would hear things said by the media that would make them believe thinking like that is okay. But, it's hard to say, as the proud racists, are usually the ones actually attacking others. So, would it be better to focus on them instead? Again, I don't believe it would be the best way, but asking these questions might help bring about greater progress.
