This is literally the BEST ever document regarding The Phantom of the Opera I've ever seen/read!!! Such an amazing find to have in your family's collection still to this day. It's literally my favourite film of all time ever since I was a kid (now I'm 24 lol). Thanks for sharing Antonia!!! :-)

Wow! Mr Landis must have been thrilled. I know I would have been! To get a personal letter like that from your uncle would have been amazing. And talk about the subject matter, Lon Chaney as the Hunchback!!!! He was in my opinion, the greatest actor in all of film acting. The 1925 version is transcendent as a whole and a lesson in film in every single incidence. Thankyou for sharing this Miss Carlotta.
    cheers, Slim 😎 x

I got so excited, I mixed up the date for the Phantom with the Hunchback. Whoops! I Loved both films but was referring to the Phantom of course. Sorry for my mistake ... 😉 x

+tahitislim25 Haha no worries! I'm still so blown away by the letter. It would make my year to receive something like that! And yes, Lon Chaney is no doubt one of the greats!

Wow!! As an autograph collector myself, I would have been excited beyond belief to receive your letter. I wonder how did this make it's way back to your mother? It's Hollywood historical content is extremely rare concerning what your Uncle's extraordinary plans were for Universal at the time. Miraculous! It appears to me that your suspicions are correct. Mr. Landis was probably an autograph collector and had most likely written to your uncle several times prior. It appears your uncle had a friendly correspondence with Mr. Landis who he most likely consider a fan. A friendship had been struck. How lucky for you to have this amazing archive from your family. As far as your question concerning the memo, your uncle would have most likely sent an inner office memo to Carl, Jr. then down the chain concerning production and costs. Carl, Jr. 2nd would have gone office to office gathering the most updated information from all the directors to be put in a memo to go back up the chain and to the president. This would have been a very important practice to keep costs down.

Please tell me, how do we see the Carl Laemmle documentary again? We saw it in the theatre and loved it! We want to be able to show it to others too.

I'm so happy you saw the movie and liked it! The website carllaemmlethefilm.com has a list of the theaters and festivals it'll be playing in. The Twitter @CarlLaemmleFilm also shares when new screenings are added, plus if the director, myself, or anyone else will be appearing to present the film!

Nothing more ignorant than not knowing the proper pronunciation of a person's name. Thanks for enlightening us.
