I am 66 years old I am on my 14th day after surgery. I feel so positive after watching your video I had dreadful feeling of losing my left eye vision but I notice an improvement about 80 %. This has taught me to have patience I know I have a long way to recovery but feel hopeful. As for the facedown posturing was torture but I mastered the art of it now Thank you again for sharing❤

Thank you Sheila for this video. I'm going through this right now, 41 years old nearsighted. Totally came out of blue went from normal vision to almost blind in a week had emergency surgery the day after seeing the retina specialist thankfully they caught it early I guess but I had a complete detachment and a " giant tear " so thankful for the doctors and my family and support system

Your attitude is AMAZING! I had 3 detachments in 2 weeks. 2 in right eye and one in left eye. now I am 3 months out with Scleral buckles and Sillicone Oil in both eyes. Seeing the doc in a few days to determine when to take out the Oil. A little nervous because things have been 'stable' for last 3 months - vision is far from perfect especially in right eye but I know I have to move on to the next phase and hopefully have no more detachments and better vision in the next few months.

I just went though a detached retinal surgery on my left eye and had a gas bubble inserted in my eye too. The Doctor told me today that the gas will take another 2 months to dissappear and before I can see properly again ( my left eye ) is still a bit blurry. Thanks for explaining your experiences and how you copped with the aftermath of your two types of surgery. I to am very thankful for the professionalism and modern technology that's available today as it wasn't that many years ago I would have lost my sight! I had my operation done in Halifax about 5 1/2 weeks ago. Thanks again for the video!

While I am 70 most of my problems have to do with age I don't know how I would have handle it if I were younger. Hoping that this message finds you with all of the troubles behind you. You certainly have created a well-thought protocols and positions for the positioning. I know how horrible it is as I’ve had 4 retinal surgeries and am now experiencing double vision. I will tell my doctor about this when I see him. I also had the cataract surgery and that one is a breeze compared to any retinal issue. It’s an anxious and sometimes terrifying time because it is imperative to the patient to position correctly to hold that retina down. What you and others have had to do truly requires super human tenacity to complete the patient’s part of the work! Wishing you a bright future with your 20/20 vision enjoying all the miracles that there are to see! Many thanks for your well-thought out details on this subject. You are helping so many!

Wow, I have been so lucky as my posturing just involved sitting bolt upright for 45 minutes in each waking hour and sleeping on my left side with two pillows at night! They even let me play guitar which has helped a lot. I do not have to do the positioning anymore as I am beyond 12 days into recovery. The gas bubble is beginning to shrink now and I see a slit of 'normal' vision at the very top of my eye. Thank you for your words of encouragement just what I needed to hear. How are you doing now? Thank you for taking the time in researching and working all of this out for the rest of us that are having to go thru eye surgeries. You have worked out so many problems with more solutions than I would have ever thought of. I've had a detached retina with the oil solution (instead of the gas bubble) so I was allowed to sleep on my side at night with my head down slightly. I still have to have the oil taken out later ... then later on cataract surgeries. Your positive attitude and encouragement is much appreciated by everyone who watches this video. I'm so glad that it's worked out well for you ... and as you said, Thank God we live in a time where we have doctors and improved surgeries for everything. God Bless you and your family.

Thanks for sharing. I had a retina detachment right eye. The eye surgeon did a vitrectomy, laser retinopexy and inserted a gas bubble about a week ago. My detachment was at the top and I had to sleep upright to ensure that the bubble is pushing the retina into place. It's really causing a heavy back pain but at least I don't have to tilt my head down all the time.

Thank you so much...I went to the specialist referred by my opthamologist because of a "possibly macular pucker" No urgency was indicated to me and I waited more than 2 wks before I made it to the retina specialist. Needless to say...I was in shock and terror when he told me I could not leave his office as I needed to immediately have emergency procedure for retinal tear - if I left, I could possibly end up losing my sight. This happened on a Friday and I am to see the specialist on Monday for checkup on the freezing & gas bubble placed for the tear. The hardest part for me has been the head placement and not being impressed upon what I can or can't do physically - Your video gave me a lot of insight as to what I have to do & WHY it is so imporant. Thank you so much.

It is now three weeks after the operation for me. I was given clearance a week ago to return to more or less normal life. That is, no more lying face down 24/7.
The gas that I had injected into my eye finally disappeared yesterday. My sight has not returned to the way it was before. However, I have to give it time. My eye is still red but the swelling has subsided and the eyelid is almost back to normal.
Straight lines appear wavy as others had reported.and things are not completely clear.
I had a silicone band placed that will increase my myopia. This might be some of the blurry vision.. However, I am not sure yet if the macula has been affected. It does seem a little more foggy in the centre of my vision. Anyway, I have some vision now and I hope in time, things will continue to improve. I just wanted to share my experience for others who may be going through this and not knowing what to expect.

I’m day 7 post op. Crapping myself. Great video. I wasn’t given a huge amount of postural care advice- no where near as detailed as your video. It might depend on the extent of the detachment (I hope) as I was only advised to lie face down for 24 hrs. Then I’m daytime, head level, sleep face/ cheek down- never head up
My main problem is being off work, cancelling my patients and trying to be invisible at home to a wife who looks angry at me for not helping out and a special needs son who doesn’t understand why I can’t play with him
It’s only day 7. I feel useless redundant and no longer vital. It’s only day 7

I complaint for 3 years about floaters and flashing light but my optometrist told me that every thing was fine even my optomologist said he never saw a tear. Now I wish that I would of see another one .Lesson learn but at a great price.

Its better using the massage table. My surgeon also lasered all my lattice degeneration. Im 63 and feel blessed to have the surgery.

Thank you for your comprehensive video, it was very helpful. I have probably watched a couple dozen videos = Yours is one of the better ones. I have a macular hole, and the surgeon is recommending a vitrectomy. I was informed that I could be in the face position, anywhere from one week, to a month. I have arthritis in my neck, shoulders, and lower back. I’m also (naturally) top-heavy. = This is a huge NO for me, my body honestly cannot be in this position for an extended period of time. I’ll be contacting Guide Dogs for the Blind - Which is a much more viable option for me. Thankfully, I’m a huge dog lover!
Hopefully optometry and the like, will evolve for folks that are unable to partake in this type of recovery. Stay well! 🌹

The flashes of light are super bright.
The black floaters never go away as they are parts of the eye or blood. They float to the bottom of the eye. A surgeon can remove (vacuum?) the floater material out.

Buy a massage table before your surgery - Costco or Canadian tire has them. Keep your face down 24/7 - its like when you set glue - you want to put it in vice grips so it sets. Same situation when you have your face down - it will push the gas bubble up against the retina to set it in place for good. Even though it will be horrible it is worth the 100% effort.

Not getting much sleep, and no appetite at all. Had I gone to the doctor 2 days later, I would have lost all my vision in the right eye.

thank you so much for this valuable information. Unfortunately my surgeon and his assistants give precious little instruction or guidance and my surgery is only days away which has escalated my anxiety about the whole proceedure. btw, I had to sign a 5 year contract to only use this surgeon and his office for eye issues. I'd never heard of that before. I know that no matter what anyone says or does, it's the bottom line that matters to them. Thankfully I have 3 insurance coverages.

@@raizenperez1358 you should see if you can get an appointment with a retina doctor because they can laser your eye to prevent a retina detachment(it was too late for my right eye because liquid got into the back of it through the holes and detached my retina… but he checked my left eye and the holes were even worse but that same day he was able to laser my left eye up and it’s been perfect ever since. When my retina detached… I didn’t have symptoms, my vision just pretty much went black within the next 12 hours as it was detaching. Physical activity could cause floaters but it doesn’t mean there’s a detachment. Do you have someone in your area that specializes in retina? Other eye doctors don’t even have the equipment to see those tears 🥲

I had to be face down for a week. I could sit up for 10 minutes every hour to eat, go to the bathroom etc. Then for the next 4-6 weeks I could alternate left or right side. After about 8 weeks I could finally sleep on my back. Throughout all of this there was no bending or lifting.
My strategy to prevent rolling onto my back was to safety pin a sock with a tennis ball inside it to the back of my shirt.
To keep water out of my eyes I wore swim goggles in the shower! LOL.
My original prescription was -11.00 left eye, -12.00. My surgeon opted to not to laser my opposite eye. My depth perception was/is completely off. It makes to extremely tough, I am an illustrator. The procedure has caused my cataracts in my right (the detached retina side) eye to develop more quickly.

I have one coming up on the 8th-- BAD one-- old cataract has to come out first-- and he said on scale of 1-10 mine is a 15 or more.. so could cause a lot of damage trying to get it out.. and then he's doing a vitrectormy at the same time- removing the vitreous. (using Silicon oil replacement- last longer on bad cases...then i go on 15th of Octrober for retinal re-attachment surgery for maybe the FIRST of many.. and the drops they gave me was for BAD cases- lot stronger than normal.. It worried me when I went to what I thought was the best specialist in the area and he immediately referred me to "a specialist".. good thing is the OIL they're using doens't require all the special positioning.. I can do normal stuff 24 hours after the surgery.. and it can be left in indefinitely-- just checked each year for bubbles etc..
