I had no interest in gardening but my wife kept a few annuals in pots on the windowsill. One day a few years ago my wife wanted me to dig a flower bed in the front lawn so I went a dug a flower bed. My wife then wanted me to help plant the flowers and so I did and then she wanted me to care for the flowers. I did not a clue what I was doing but I learned slowly but surely. I now have four flower garden beds, fifty pots in the front garden and a no dig vegetable garden out the back. The moral of the story is always listen to your wife.
Be careful Karen .That tracheospermum is only half hardy and it grows huge .The wall would be the best place for it .Its evergreen 🙂 The geranium Rozanne is a brilliant plant but it will fill your barrel each season .Great choices though . I place my plastic pots inside the terracotta and if there's a slight gap I pack it with bark and then use it as a mulch .Pot stays watered for ages 😊
Follow Catherine’s tutorial for faux bricks. I did it on a concrete patio and love the results. Easy and inexpensive. Would look great on your wall just like it did on hers!
We made little cedar wood trivets which help with drainage for all my large pots & you can add the casters to the bottom of your wood trivet. We used cedar fence posts & ripped them down to assemble our trivet so our cost is minimal. Just another quick tip.
I'm happily watching this video again. It is helping to extend the gardening season just a little longer for me. I LOVE your container garden. Just beautiful.
Just a tip if you wanna plant the barrels with temporary plants you can half fill with polystyrene to recycle it from plant packs you've bought or deliveries you may have had then you only need to use half the compost as they're so big, also they won't be so heavy... Just a thought. It all looks so beautiful 😊
I love the little wispy flowers blowing in the wind? You and Catherine have the prettiest flowers and great varieties. The geraniums are so different from any I’ve had. Yours are absolutely beautiful but different. I want some like these. What is the variety. I bought impatiens yesterday. The are so delicate and just lovely but they too are different from any I’ve had before. I’ve been so limited in flowers here until I found a local nursery I didn’t know existed. I went a little wild this weekend 😂.
Your cottage garden in pots looks absolutely beautiful ( the pottage garden maybe) It is lovely walking around your garden & discovering things that have just appeared, so exciting. Have a lovely time away x
I can hear the excitement in your voice when you spot a new bud on your flowers .. I'm the same way 🥀. Your cottage garden is so pretty! Happy Gardening 👩🌾
I see you were wondering about covering up your wall - Catherine's solution with the faux brick seems to work well. And it doesn't cost a bomb. so you will have cash for more plants! 🙂
Hi Karen, next to the mirror is the perfect spot for your clematis, roots like to be in shade so don't forget to protect them. Did you know that you can seal the inside of the terracotta pots so the water doesn't evaporate so quickly. And you are quite right dunking your pots every now and then and letting the water drain out ensures a good water, especially before or after going away. I love the honeysuckle is it lemon and white or burgundy and cream? Looking forward to your next video. 😊♥
Took a trip to Kilkenny on Monday to collect a few half barrels. Like you, I am pondering what to put in them. Maybe lupins? Not sure. Did the lads there mention to keep them on a layer of gravel for longevity - if they are sitting in the mucky ground, they will rot. Very interesting about water proofing the terracotta pots too
You're right. It depends on your area you live. People think Hawaii is all around tropical weather. Wrong! There are parts of the island that are tropical but there are parts that are like a desert. I've seen limp cactuses. And with the climate changing, we still have rain . . . in June? Not complaining. I just chopped down my rose vine. It was taller than my garage. If you don't spray your roses, you can dry the petals and make tea. You have a beautiful garden.
I also saw youtubers Huw Richards and GrowVeg recommend mulching with grass cuttings and it's been a life saver! When my family cut their lawn I take a bag and use it on my pots- (I am a container gardener too due to renting so don't have my own lawn!) it really seems to work, apparently grass is high in nitrogen. It's a good way to have a 'closed loop system' (where you don't need to keep buying things in and the garden is self sustaining!)
I water in the morning and that's when I ponder everything. I am especially excited about my veg as its a first for me and they seem to be growing at a great rate. I have quite a few of my cottage garden plants in pots this year and mingle them in the boarders, trouble is it's going to be difficult to keep everything safe in the winter. I am sure I will find a way though lol. Your garden is looking beautiful and the mirror really sets it all off, well done and thanks for letting us enjoy it with you. Xxx
Karen, I hope you enjoyed your trip to Spain because by the time you read this we will be back! But I can’t so tickled at you when you get so excited about what’s blooming and what’s not blooming and the fact that some of it it was Leica. Let’s toss it in and see what happens Wala it’s a miracle look how beautiful it is lol love it you’re very different than Catherine I like the ease of your terra-cotta and plastic potted flower garden. I’m not as young as either one of you. Two girls are but I do like the potter and the flowers and I love of your gardens, but yours would probably be easier for me to maintain then Catherine’s I just need to go sit in Catherine’s garden. She’s got two chairs I’ll share lol. I can’t wait to see what your arbors are going to look like. I have a visual picture, but I can’t wait to see them in full bloom. Have a good week.
I love planting in pots and have about 60! I agree it is much easier to ring the changes but watering through the summer is hard work, I have a raised bed too and that needs to be treated as a container too x
Have you ever heard of water pearls/beads? They absorb water & swell to two to three times size.... they are great to add a tsp or so to your soil if you are in an especially dry area which requires extra watering in summer or arid regions.
Really enjoyed this. Your garden is looking lovely. You are so right about taking time to enjoy what we have done. Also, i love a morning garden walk around to see what is starting to bloom ❤
We are on a hose pipe ban already in my part of England. My water butt's are empty . Iv just planted a whitelavender it smells amazing. Your garden is looking fantastic. Catch you next time 😊😊😊
Love looking round your garden and hearing your advice and experience. I’ve just started my gardening journey in may there so my seeds are a good bit behind yours but I am loving watching things change every day! X
💯 can relate!!! I seem to be doing so much doing at the minute in the garden! I am delighted the bank holiday weekend is here, looking forward to a cheaky glass of wine later and sitting in the garden with a few nibbles. Enjoy your trip to Spain! Laura 🌱🙃
Love your plant choices 😍 I’ve taken a screenshot of the Clematis label because I think I have to have one 🙊😁 I’ve been inspired to create more cottage garden pots because I tend to grow veg and pop a few annuals in for pollination but never make them entirely dedicated to flowers. My late Nan used to do her flower pots beautifully too, so I’m feeling very excited to get going with a new project (on my list of 103!!) Thanks for the video - a very relaxing watch 😊
Oh listen, I hear you with the list of 103 projects! At least when we sow seeds, we can kind of forget about them for a while and wait for them to bloom while tackling other bits on the list!
I think it would look great if you did the faux brick look like Catherine’s and maybe do the patio too just to tie it all together and make the pots pop.
Your clematis is beautiful. I got my first geranium after 30 years of growing. I always called them old lady plants😅 well guess who's an old lady now 😊 it's a lovely deep pink. I have cat nip in my yard for cat. Do you have pineapple sage over there? Makes a beautiful mound of foliage. Waiting on the tiny red flowers it gets. They say our hummingbirds like them. Fingers crossed. Be well.
The garden is really looking beautiful. Have started following you after watching you and Catherine together. Obviously lovely friends:) I live in NZ and we are into winter here. Not so much gardening other than weeding at the moment.😊 Just wanted to say hi and look forward to future viewings. All the best.
Thank you so much for following, Anne! I actually have an aunt called Anne who also lives in NZ! Weeding is not a job I enjoy, not gonna lie, but it feels great when it’s done!
I live in zone 4 in the US, very cold and long winters! But I most say you have inspired me to do more container gardening for my front porch. ( with perennials). Your yard is so pretty with all the different flowers!
Love your pots! You've inspired me to get lots of different plants in pots for my balcony, so I went wild in the garden center yesterday 🙂 but, have you considered taking the stickers off of your plastic pots ;-)
I never consider that and I never even notice it 😂😂😂 I guess I’m too busy looking at the plants 🙈 So glad you got some nice plants for your balcony yesterday!
@@Lovelygirliebits I used to leave the stickers on even though I didn't like the look of it. I just turned the pots around. And one day someone in a video said: "I don't understand why people don't take the stickers off of their bins and pots" And I was like "huh? I can actually take them off?" lol And now I turned into the sticker police 🤣🙃
Lovely video Karen. I can resonate with those moments of pure joy when you sem something coming into bloom😊. I think that lovely rose may be a Rose Masquerade🤔. It starts of yellowish, then pink then red I believe. It is a wonderful plant to have. I also love the geranium Rozanne, it is such a generous plant, and wonderful for dividing. I Enjoy your time away, thanks again for sharing.🦋💐🌼
I got the greenhouse in Woodies last spring, but then this spring, had to buy a new cover for it on Amazon. This cover is much heavier than the one that came with it, but the greenhouse is so handy for all my seeds!

Would look great on your wall just like it did on hers!
Put some 3 casters (wheels) on the bottom of your barrel planters so you can move them easier.
Genius! Thank you for that idea, I’ll totally be doing that!
We made little cedar wood trivets which help with drainage for all my large pots & you can add the casters to the bottom of your wood trivet. We used cedar fence posts & ripped them down to assemble our trivet so our cost is minimal. Just another quick tip.
The colour of your fence looks like "Cuprinol garden colours" in Wild Thyme. Love your new plants x
Pottering around gardens is just the best.

Joyous! Your enthusiasm remains infectious. 😊

Or cottage in a pot. Lol I have all containers. I’m just waiting for everything to fill in and look natural.
Oh yes, brick on the back wall would be so lovely. I wish I had a wall in my garden. I would use a sponge. Love from Germany ❤🐞❤
I’m going to research and experiment as I’d love a weathered looking brick effect - I have a vision!
I can hear the excitement in your voice when you spot a new bud on your flowers .. I'm the same way 🥀. Your cottage garden is so pretty! Happy Gardening 👩🌾
I am in western Canada, It's been 32 here and no breeze, we get very hot heated summers. Love u're place, beautiful!
Wow, that sounds very intense! I lived in Ottawa for a few years and remember the hot summers, I’m not built for that heat!

The astrantia is beautiful
Thank you and enjoy your time in Spain
Thank you! I had a lovely time - home and all already!
Fill the bottom of the barrels with stones for drainage any wood twigs ect u can get even grass cuttings it will fill a bit and break down over time.

If you are wanting to faze out the plastic pots, turn them into tables or risers for little pots, glue on wood or pizza pan for a top.
That’s a fab idea!

Irish frost 😮

Geranium Rozanne is the most reliable best value plant you will EVER buy !
Enjoyed the tour and chat. So much to see and it all is lovely. Enjoy the week. I'll be looking forward to the next video.🌼🌱💮
Your garden looks so nice. I do annuals more in pots than I use to. See you soon.
I feel like I need more annuals myself now 😂

Enjoy your Sunday Laura! You deserve that glass of wine!
Great video.thank you
Thanks for watching Helen ❤️
Love your videos. Glad found you thru Dainty Diaries. You two are so hilarious together. But really love your down to earth videos
Maybe put small trees in your barrels or a standard lilac or laburnum would be great statement plants xx
Really nice 😊

Your rose blooms are so beautiful. Could it be a rose named Pat Austin or a Rosa Peace tea rose?
I think it would look great if you did the faux brick look like Catherine’s and maybe do the patio too just to tie it all together and make the pots pop.
The patio needs to be redone completely so I think for longevity, I’d pave it differently (I have a vision and a dream for it!)
I think that is Persian Catmint. At 14:41 is a Salvia, I think Cup Sage?
It’s looking gorgeous Karen.
Thanks Ellen!

I set Clematis last year they never came
They went to Heaven 😊😊
You would be proud, I bought 75 packets of seeds in one transaction. It felt so good 😂
Oh my God you’re gonna be set for life with them!!
I need to know how can I set a Clamitis

16:10 looks like an Andrews Sweet Tea Rose, but not 100% as was a single clip of one rose 🌹😊
I often split the plants I buy like that geranium would be getting halved.
I have six rose bushes and they all have rust spots. What can I do about them
