I played but couldn't finish the fan translation. My laptop was a potato and even though I craved the lore of the ghosts and the rituals, I gave up after about 17 crashes.
As a huge fan of the first three games I remember my massive disappointment when it became apparent that Nintendo was not going to localize FF4 into English. When I found out that a fan translation was being worked on I ordered an import copy of the game that very day and went through the utterly terrifying process of modding my Wii (I had never modded a console before) in anticipation. When the patch was finally released I loaded it onto my modded Wii in a surprisingly smooth process and began to play the game. I was fully prepared to experience a "rough and ready" translation with typical spelling and grammar errors and awkward phrasing. So imagine my complete delight and surprise when what greeted me was a fully professional, mostly technically perfect localization! Sadly, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse remains the only game in the series I have not completed (yes, I've even finished the strange augmented reality 3DS spin-off). This is not due to any technical limitation or shortcoming on behalf of the game, but because I find FF4 to be hands-down the most terrifying game in the series! I will definitely give it another go this Halloween season thanks to Ragnar's excellent video highlighting this truly, shamefully neglected survival horror masterpiece. Also, massive, MASSIVE THANK YOU to Tempus, Chabi and MrMongoose for not only a professional-grade translation but also for the incredible technical achievement of putting together a patch that replaces text and textures as data streams of the disk in real time! As a non-programmer it might as well have been magic to me and was truly a joy to play.
Played it back in the day on the Wii, but I deadass couldn't finish it because of the controls. Loved everything else. The new color scheme and mood especially, it's almost intimate, seduces you deeper into the horrors. ...but, jeez. I don't even know where to begin with how💯terrible the controls are. Every encounter, every moment with the camera in hand felt like a huge struggle and annoyance and eventually I couldn't take it. And it's nothing to do with elitism, I promise... Sorry man. ;~;

I had to play this title on Japanese, and I had to memorize the menu to upgrade the camera and such, also had to read the story online while I was playing so I wouldn't miss any part of the plot, and I definitely have to agree, this is one is the best installments on the series. I really hope Fatal frame Maiden of the black water sells good, there's still a ton of fans out there, and we're dying for a new chapter on the series.

Oooooh man. I remember playing this on my modded Wii when it first came out. I played it in Japanese, as the English mod was not released yet. Even though I didn't know any Japanese, I was determined to play it because I was such a fan of the series. I remember loving the changes in terms of camera angle and also how to control the camera obscura. Even though the motion controls had some issues some times, overall I thought they were fun to use. I was surprised I was able to do the (I think if I remember correctly) final puzzle with the piano at the end on the first try. I wish the whole series would get a Switch release. That would be amazing.

It really is the worst part of digital era. There's a demand and market for it, yet just letting it rot despite having the rights to do anything for them. It also happened with other media like books and movies Unironically the best way to prevent them truly gone is to pirate and keeping the torrent alive or downright releasing the code like DOOM did
Not only that, but in some countries (mine included), "piracy" is the only way someone can experience a videogame. Videogames are EXPENSIVE, like, the physical copies cost EASILY above 200 (200 is the minimum price, is almost impossible to find something cheaper than that), and yeah, the non physical are cheaper, but still cost something like 80 (again, the minimum price. Unless it's a STEAM promotion or a indie game. I love both). So between buying a videogame that maybe you even won't like after you finish or spending the same money on something else, a lot of people prefer to the second option
Fatal Frame is truly my favourite brand of horror, as are the Silent Hill games: Games where the monsters are not angry. They are sad. And you're about to join them in their depressing afterlife.
Amazing video as always! While not related to FF4, I recently undubbed Fatal Frame 1 and 2 on PS2 (I can provide directions if needed) and I wanted to say that over 30 voice clips were missing in the localization of FF2 of the 2 sisters talking and commenting about the story, the environment and more. Plus me and my team also introduced English subtitles, Japanese audio and the original 3D models into FF1. Recently, I also started haivng a look at this game and try to see what can be improved, changed or simplified to make the patch available to more!

I just finally finished Maiden of Blackwater and it saddens me that Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was straight up memoryholed from the franchise. It's not even featured at all in the digital artbook that was supposed to be commemorating the series' 20th anniversary. It's understandable as it would have little effect on the western audience but it's not present in the JP version either.

I've been looking forward to this video! I'm so happy to see Mask of the Lunar Eclipse getting some of the recognition it deserves. I was one of the group that helped out with the patch, and it's still one of my favourite games ever - every time I play it I'm still blown away by how much care and attention went into the design. I'm really hoping that if the Maiden of Black Water port does well they might finally consider an official release in some form. 🙏
I watched play through that had a more accurate translation. Gab Smolders did one years ago. She recently replayed this with the fan translation patch. Everything was mostly correct but she did point out some irregularities that are crucial to the understanding of the finer parts of the story. My Hope is that fatal frame 5 being re-released will be a big push for them to remaster all of their games. Would love to see a new life brought to them.

I remember this one well it spawned my still somewhat hatred of Nintendo to this day. My friend setup his Wii and on my birthday he managed to get it to working. So I played Fatal Frame IV to the fullest it was exciting and so wonderful. I still find it criminal this one is still locked away.

I distinctly remember seeing the warped, blurry faces from the Moon Disease, and it deeply affected me. I love this game, and it breaks my heart to see Nintendo do it dirty like this.
I remember playing this in japanese when it came out. It was hard for me to follow along but I've always been such a huge fan of the Fatal Frame games that it didn't matter. And that awful room with the sadistic little girl and all the mannequins is one of the best sets in all the FF games.

I was honestly stunned, after last playing a FF game in the mid 2000s with FF3, i tried Maiden of Blackwater and discovered the series had devolved from slow burn J-horror into some kind of anime tiddy realdoll jumpscare simulator.
I'm glad they continued the fatal frame series I just hope they remaster the other titles some of us can't afford an arm and a leg for the ps2 versions

@@YashuuK the notebook of the male character helps a lot! It was confusing to me until I actually started reading his notebook and also listening to the tapes and doctor notes. But another reason why is confusing it’s because the translation was a little off in some parts specially poems and misakis dr interview.
I love VI. Hell, I was the one who begged my big bro to install Homebrew so that I can play VI. Probably the last Fatal Frame game I seem to really enjoy. I don't remember much of my time playing VI, but I do remember enjoying it a lot. I hated the Grudge's sound in that one room in Misaki's campaign. Also, I wouldn't mind playing VI again if it was re-release for other consoles.
Having played it yeah, this game really did surprise me in terms of its quality and atmosphere. Heck I don’t like hospitals at the best of times but this place just creeped me right the fuck out; which for a horror game is one hell of a good thing. Also, and I’m really not trying to mansplain or anything but you would use IV for 4. VI is six, which IF you count Spirit Camera on the 3DS (you’d be more than forgiven not to) 6 is Maiden of Black Water.

its a shame fatal frame went the way of the dinosaurs, I tried to take fatal frame 5 seriously in the same way with the first 3 games but it just doesn't hold up. I feel like they turned it into a anime/railshooter and kept the game made for mediocre/casual gamers who are into the modern cheesy anime look of games like SAO or attack on titans
I haven't wanted to get in touch with my Catholic youth. But if it will get us just 1 more good motion controlled horror game, I'll take one for the team.
I hate, how western gaming journalists killed pretty much any possibility of getting English translation of this. And I 100% agree, the motion controls elevates this from great game, to something special. I played this translation on modded Wii, and this is one of my favorite games.
I'm super happy that Fatal Frame 4 was finally released outside Japan! ...Unfortunately, they're a bit pricey, so I don't think I'll buy them just yet.

Hey! Although you might not see this seeing, I just recently discovered your channel and have been loving the content so far. I even watched the Fatal Frame analysis all in one go, and I totally agree that the series was not done enough justice (in terms of sales) in the west. But, I guess this will be first time I disagree in terms of the controls. Both Fatal Frame 2 Wii and Mask have TERRIBLE controls using the original Wii Controller and Nunchuk and the game has no Classic Controller support. Playing in an emulator with different controls absolutely solves that problem, but reviews of the time and basically anyone stuck with a Wii, like me, were absolutely right about bashing the game controls, for they feel undercooked and unintuitive. I've saw some articles and even an old Iwata Asks with devs about how they wanted to include Motion Plus support to the game and it abolsutely shows in the final product, considering how horrible the thing feels. Aside from that, your videos have been incredible, the mood and tone of the script, the fluidity in speech combined with game scenes and videos are excellent. You truly are one in a million! Keep up the good work!
I simply will never like motion controls because having to wave my arms around while trying to focus on playing a game just isn't fun to me, and I enjoy the tight, responsive nature of button and stick inputs. When I make a mistake, I don't want to have to question whether it was my fault or the controller's. All that said, I still want to give this game a go someday. Maybe when they finally decide to put it on other platforms.

Man, i wish fatal frame series never die because this series have special place in my heart. I've played all fatal frame series even that spirit camera. And for me, fatal frame 4 is one of my favourite game as fatal frame game. The theme itself is unique for me. It combined music, hospital, and damn ritual. And after 7 years ff v release in 2014, i'm dying to see new title.... And dont forget tsukiko amano song in ending is "signature" To this series.
Look at this. 1-3 is the best part for me. And 4 sadly i didnt get the chance to touch it but ive watch several youtube about 4 and its not bad. I still love the vibe 4 gives the horror, the chill. And now look at black water im dissapointed because the game turn into fanservice and i didnt get scared at all while playthru Black water.

The Fatal Frame series is my most favorite game franchise of all time!! It's so beautifully done. I really hope they do remakes or remasters of the originals. There is another video game franchise I would be really interested in you reviewing. It's abit old school but in my opinion ahead of its time. PS2 classic forbidden siren 1 and 2. Given that you enjoy horror games with unique story abd interesting game mechanics and immersive worlds that are captivating. I can not reccomend this game enough. Keiichiro Toyama with Team Siren made up entirely of former Team Silent members created a great series with Blood Siren, sadly most left Japan Studio to form Bokeh Game Studio I wish the team was brought back to create Gravity Rush 3
God, I love the jumpscares in Fatal Frame. It's one of the few jumpscares done right cases, IMO. All of them feel deserved, it's not overly done and it never feels intrusive. It's not a in your face loud screeching FNAF doll at your face, it's more a "there was something there. Always was. But I never noticed until it chose to reveal itself. It makes you feel tense and always in a fight or flight scenario. It's great, it builds the horror so well.

FYI: Maiden of Black Water is being released physically in the Asia and Japan regions, both of which have English subs (and possibly voice?).
The new Steam/Switch/Playstation release of the game supports both English and Japanese Voice Over plus full subtitles.

I remember this one well it spawned my still somewhat hatred of Nintendo to this day. My friend setup his Wii and on my birthday he managed to get it to working. So I played Fatal Frame IV to the fullest it was exciting and so wonderful. I still find it criminal this one is still locked away.

you don't even really need motion control, it's playable with only dualshock 3.
The remaster has gyro controls and it works really well! Not only they are more immersive, they're actually more precise than stick only aiming.

Well this one didn't age quite so well... now that a remaster on switch is releasing.
I distinctly remember seeing the warped, blurry faces from the Moon Disease, and it deeply affected me. I love this game, and it breaks my heart to see Nintendo do it dirty like this.
I remember playing this in japanese when it came out. It was hard for me to follow along but I've always been such a huge fan of the Fatal Frame games that it didn't matter.
And that awful room with the sadistic little girl and all the mannequins is one of the best sets in all the FF games.

I was honestly stunned, after last playing a FF game in the mid 2000s with FF3, i tried Maiden of Blackwater and discovered the series had devolved from slow burn J-horror into some kind of anime tiddy realdoll jumpscare simulator.
I'm glad they continued the fatal frame series I just hope they remaster the other titles some of us can't afford an arm and a leg for the ps2 versions

@@BornRemaining 4 is hard to understand even without story ties, it's a messy and disjointed narrative. In a really compelling and arguably thematically appropriate way, but borderline incomprehensible nonetheless.
@@YashuuK the notebook of the male character helps a lot! It was confusing to me until I actually started reading his notebook and also listening to the tapes and doctor notes. But another reason why is confusing it’s because the translation was a little off in some parts specially poems and misakis dr interview.
By the way, Nintendo is re-releasing this game for the swtich.

I love VI. Hell, I was the one who begged my big bro to install Homebrew so that I can play VI. Probably the last Fatal Frame game I seem to really enjoy. I don't remember much of my time playing VI, but I do remember enjoying it a lot. I hated the Grudge's sound in that one room in Misaki's campaign. Also, I wouldn't mind playing VI again if it was re-release for other consoles.
Having played it yeah, this game really did surprise me in terms of its quality and atmosphere. Heck I don’t like hospitals at the best of times but this place just creeped me right the fuck out; which for a horror game is one hell of a good thing.
Also, and I’m really not trying to mansplain or anything but you would use IV for 4. VI is six, which IF you count Spirit Camera on the 3DS (you’d be more than forgiven not to) 6 is Maiden of Black Water.

its a shame fatal frame went the way of the dinosaurs, I tried to take fatal frame 5 seriously in the same way with the first 3 games but it just doesn't hold up. I feel like they turned it into a anime/railshooter and kept the game made for mediocre/casual gamers who are into the modern cheesy anime look of games like SAO or attack on titans

I hate, how western gaming journalists killed pretty much any possibility of getting English translation of this. And I 100% agree, the motion controls elevates this from great game, to something special. I played this translation on modded Wii, and this is one of my favorite games.

Hey! Although you might not see this seeing, I just recently discovered your channel and have been loving the content so far. I even watched the Fatal Frame analysis all in one go, and I totally agree that the series was not done enough justice (in terms of sales) in the west. But, I guess this will be first time I disagree in terms of the controls. Both Fatal Frame 2 Wii and Mask have TERRIBLE controls using the original Wii Controller and Nunchuk and the game has no Classic Controller support. Playing in an emulator with different controls absolutely solves that problem, but reviews of the time and basically anyone stuck with a Wii, like me, were absolutely right about bashing the game controls, for they feel undercooked and unintuitive. I've saw some articles and even an old Iwata Asks with devs about how they wanted to include Motion Plus support to the game and it abolsutely shows in the final product, considering how horrible the thing feels. Aside from that, your videos have been incredible, the mood and tone of the script, the fluidity in speech combined with game scenes and videos are excellent. You truly are one in a million! Keep up the good work!

I simply will never like motion controls because having to wave my arms around while trying to focus on playing a game just isn't fun to me, and I enjoy the tight, responsive nature of button and stick inputs. When I make a mistake, I don't want to have to question whether it was my fault or the controller's.
All that said, I still want to give this game a go someday. Maybe when they finally decide to put it on other platforms.

Man, i wish fatal frame series never die because this series have special place in my heart. I've played all fatal frame series even that spirit camera. And for me, fatal frame 4 is one of my favourite game as fatal frame game. The theme itself is unique for me. It combined music, hospital, and damn ritual. And after 7 years ff v release in 2014, i'm dying to see new title.... And dont forget tsukiko amano song in ending is "signature" To this series.
Look at this. 1-3 is the best part for me. And 4 sadly i didnt get the chance to touch it but ive watch several youtube about 4 and its not bad. I still love the vibe 4 gives the horror, the chill.

The Fatal Frame series is my most favorite game franchise of all time!! It's so beautifully done. I really hope they do remakes or remasters of the originals. There is another video game franchise I would be really interested in you reviewing. It's abit old school but in my opinion ahead of its time. PS2 classic forbidden siren 1 and 2. Given that you enjoy horror games with unique story abd interesting game mechanics and immersive worlds that are captivating. I can not reccomend this game enough.

God, I love the jumpscares in Fatal Frame. It's one of the few jumpscares done right cases, IMO. All of them feel deserved, it's not overly done and it never feels intrusive. It's not a in your face loud screeching FNAF doll at your face, it's more a "there was something there. Always was. But I never noticed until it chose to reveal itself.
It makes you feel tense and always in a fight or flight scenario. It's great, it builds the horror so well.
