- In the last week, the Taliban took over Jalalabad, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and 15 Afghan provincial capitals. Taliban advanced at a breakneck speed to capture entire Afghanistan even before the last of the US troops could exit the country. After the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the group was believed to be weakened, but the Taliban’s rapid gains show that the group was never weakened but only laid dormant, waiting for the US to exit. Probably didn't help that Pompeo negotiated the release of 5000 Taliban fighters, without the Afghan govt's involvement, and they were forced to do it. Imagine being in the Afghan army and seeing the fruits of the past 20 years of fighting being released from prison back onto the battlefield. Why would they keep fighting?
@@petedavis7970 From what I have been learning the past week, Afghan military commitment was always this way. Soldiers were treated as the lowest class citizens. Recruitment goals were not met. Soldiers were not paid on time. Outposts were malnourished, and abandonment was common. The zeal and courage we saw at the tarmac scene was not the zeal and courage fighting the Taliban.
Iraqi soldiers trained by US actually managed to push back ISIS, meanwhile its a completely different case here

US trained Afghan army was fully Taliban penetrated. US provided free training and arms to Taliban as they never did a background check when hiring new soldiers. Taliban took full advantage of this.
