Interesting fact: When Disney made it big, he bought his parents a new house. However, the house had a faulty furnace that frequently had gas leaks. The gas leaks killed Flora Disney, Walt's mother, and the guilt of the accident remained with him all his life. Part of me wonders if that's why all the moms in Disney are dead.
Interesting. One thing I thought about was maybe it prominently features a father figure as so often fathers are absent and left out while the mother is the main character. But reading that, I can totally see that motive. Dumbo featured a mother but it was a tragic character (until the end). In the other movies that featured a mother figure, she was merely a background character or stepmother that was evil. Then again, Disney movies were ripoffs of older tales so...
the reason why lots of Disney characters are orphans or have lost one parent is because it endears you to the character. It's the same in old Bollywood movies
Maybe he was so upset about losing his own mom, he just couldn’t write a character with a mom because he would have to write happy and good memories and when you lose someone you don’t really want to see or write about others having a good time with their mom.
The thing is bambi's mom ate a .308 or 30-06 round, sent to her from a hunters rifle. Doesn't this mean that her bones left over from being skinned, gutted, and having the meat stripped from them were either discarded into the trash or into the woods somewhere, implying that this grave is symbolic at best?

+Coonfoot tlrledbetter Maybe Ariel's mom in the prequel is actually Ariel's oldest sister that her dad forced to marry him when their biological mom died
Little bit of trivia: the reason there are so many parent (particularly mother) deaths in Disney movies is that Walt Disney started the tradition, because he had tragically lost his mother due to a boiler accident in the new home he'd bought for her. He felt guilty ever since, and never spoke about it with anyone, and so he channeled his guilt into his films.

Part (not completely, but part) of the reason why loss of a mother/father is so prevalent in so many movies is because it promotes character development. You can have a terrific script but if there is no character development the dialogue and interactions can stale, which can bring the whole movie to a stopping point. For example, the loss of Ariel's mother and the loss of Nemo's mother shaped the relationships between those characters and their fathers, which in turn shaped their behavior and caused the conflicts that later arose in the films. Mothers are often the bigger target, because it's typically believed that the death of a mother can often be more traumatic/emotional, especially for younger children. A long-time Disney producer even had this to say: "The movies are 80 or 90 minutes long, and Disney films are about growing up. They're about that day in your life when you have to accept responsibility. In shorthand, it's much quicker to have characters grow up when you bump off their parents. Bambi's mother gets killed, so he has to grow up. Belle only has a father, but he gets lost, so she has to step into that position. It's a story shorthand." Another reason that is suspected behind Disney's choices to have most characters be without a mother is a bit different. It's believed that Walt Disney felt guilt over his mother's passing, since he was the one who bought the house for his parents, and it was eventually a furnace leak that caused his father to become ill, but his mother passed away. Most people believe that this eventually translated to many of Disney's characters being without a mother, much the same way that Disney was then left without his. This was never confirmed, but many people who worked closely with Walt said that he was "haunted" by what had happened to his mother.

My mom saved one but the rest got eaten. I think that one might have been Mickey.
I'm a scientist. Perhaps I should explain. Have you ever noticed that many Disney films show only one parental figure? It's believed that when Walt Disney was just a boy, he got to pick out a house for him and his parents, but the house had a furnace-type thing in it that was dangerously broken. *makes explosion sound* The theory is that the trauma from the death of his parent(s) caused him to not include certain parental figures in his movies.
