Fun fact: Wikipedia has a (probably very incomplete) list of sovereign states in the 1830s, and _every single country_ in this song (except for Archduchy of Austria, Aden Protectorate, and of course the two places mentioned in past tense) is mentioned on the Wikipedia list. I highly suspect that this specific list was in fact what the song writers used to come up with all the exotic country names. Not that it's necessarily a _bad_ thing - it still involved loads of pretty darn obscure places! And at least that way they could be sure that everything mentioned was googleable.
Actually, you can guarantee that this song is based on the map in 1838-1839 (whoops, not 1938-1939, typo) just based on the information in the song! (At least according to Wikipedia) Here's how: - Norbu was king of Bhutan from 1838-1850, which already limits the timeframe of the song down to those 12 years. (Also, Aden was ceded to the British in 1838, so that's the earliest possible year anyways) - Central America stopped being a single country in 1841, so the song would be inaccurate if it took place any time after that. - The Emirate of Afghanistan was briefly replaced by the Durrani Empire (which itself had been replaced by the Emirate of Afghanistan not long before) for a two-year period between 1840 and 1841, meaning that those two years would be inaccurate as well. - As such, the only two valid years for the song would be 1838 and 1839, and if you look it up, every state mentioned (except of course for the Archuchy of Austria and Aden Protectorate, but those are more technicalities than anything) did in fact exist in 1838-1839! It's seriously impressive just how much effort was put into making sure the song was accurate, here's hoping someone dares to make a full version one day. (P.S. My challenge to you, comments-readers: go look up one country from the song that you know nothing about, and read about it. Even if it's just the Wikipedia page. We all have our favorite regions, time periods, and states, but it's good to expand your horizons!)
The victoria line might suggest 1837 since it was her coronation year. I wrote that below a previous comment, but it seemed to fit with this one as well
Hey, you forgot an error, in the song they call most of the italian peninsula two sicilies, it's strange that they mentioned the papal states, that their map included in the two sicilies
6:40 Are you implying that Schleswig was a state on its own? Ok, technically it was a separate state under the Danish crown, but wars could be fought over that distinction. Wait. Wars were actually fought over it.

One mistake they made was drawing in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg) as part of Prussia. We revolted from the Spanish Habsburg Empire during the 17th century and though Napoleon conquered us and let his cousin Napoleon III rule us. The moment Napoleon was banished we took our country back. Heck, the Belgians were officially seen as a separate country from us in 1839.
@@ptolemy2222 Sorry, didn't mean any insult. I got the year from wiki. But it being 1831 makes it even more egregious that they didn't bother separating us from Prussia.
6:30 - 6:40 Great Britain was mentioned yes, Saxe-Coburg Gotha was a royal family of the UK from 1837-1914, from then it was the Windsor Royal Family, Queen Victoria is a former Empress of the UK from 1837-1901.
@@RandomRothbardian the map in that part of the animation was (loosely) modern for what parts of it weren't total monstrosities (for example the nations in africa were basically the modern countries... europe though).
I say yes and no to your comment, even though it's your "maybe." Yes, because the maps then are drawn (with some exemptions) and not captured by the satellites, which didn't exist in the 19th century. One of the examples is the Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Islas Filipinas (though it was drawn way back 1734, but still a significant part of history of mapping the world), which is different from the current map, with the exemptions of Pansipit river which went narrow because of a volcano eruption. No, because maps are slightly accurate and not as bad as what was shown in Yakko's 19th Century Geography song. For example, the Philippine Islands was badly drawn in Yakko's, and was more inaccurate than the Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Islas Filipinas (or Murillo Velarde map). Also, saying that inaccurate maps in Yakko's 19th Century Geography Song were a reference to how maps then were not so accurate is kind of stereotypical.
Yeah, the Confederate States didn't exist till 1864. So during the year where this episode is supposed to take place, (1843), the Confederate States never existed. Heck, The Mexican-American war never happened during that time.
"Britain didn't double in size and destroy hte European continent in the 1800's" If the episode is a spoof of Oliver Twist, we have to assume that the map is from the British perspective, in which case, Europe doesn't matter, or exist.
It seems the crew behind the show was aware of all the nitpicks about the original song and made sure to be as accurate as possible this time, (lyrics wise at least). It’s really cool to see how aware this team is of the fandom around this show.
Except that even to this day the official name of state is the "Free Hanseatic City of Bremen", just like how Hamburg to today and formerly Lübeck (before the Nazi's annexed it into Prussian Schleswig-Holstein, never to return again) formally used "Free and Hanseatic City of..." in their state/city-state names. So not that inaccurate minus forgetting the Hanseatic parts of their name. Edit: And I've seen nothing to suggest that in the 65-years between the dissolution of the HRE by Francis II and formation of the German Empire that they ever stopped using that title formally, with the other city-state of the time, Frankfurt, using the title "Free City of Frankfurt" (instead of the previous "Free Imperial City of Frankfurt") within the German Confederation until it's annexation by Prussia in the aftermath of the Austro-Prussian War.
The Archduchy of Austria stopped existing in 1806, it became the Kingdom of Austria. Also, the "South and it's the Maldives" is actually the Sultanate of the Maldives.
For those who don’t know, from 1823-1841 all the nations of Central America (except Panama and Belize) were united as the Federal Republic of Central America.
I think the New Queen Victoria line refers to the colony of Victoria in Australia, although that wasn't separated from New South Wales until 1851 so that might be wrong.
Am I the only one who now wants to see that song sung by TigerStar? (2:13) Here's the problem, some sources are so full of bias, misinformation, and inaccuracies that they shouldn't be listed. As to the question of finding a good, reliable source, try something like Reuters or the Associated Press.
This song takes place in 1843 as proved by Wakko saying we were singing from a 150 years from now, the first Animanics episode came out in 1993 so this happened in 1843
Quite happy to see an improvement on the song, though i have to say that the inclusion of the Persian empire is an...interesting choice considering Iran/Persia wasn't an empire (at least not officially). Wikipedia does state the "Qajar Empire" as one of the names for the Persian state at the time, but i believe that simply refers to the Qajar dynasty itself.
the ungodly inaccuracy of the maps may have been done on purpose to represent the fact that maps up until at least the mid to late 19th century had a tendency to be more of an art piece than an actual map
@@smrtfasizmu7242Considering the German and Italy states are still divided according the map and song, The song should presumably take place pre-1870’s.
I like how there is an inaccuracy in the very first words. Regardless of year in the 1800's, the Acts of Union of 1800 established the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland throughout the 19th Century. So according to Yakko, Ireland doesn't exist.
Has anybody notice the Philippines (my home) lost some 50% of the islands such as Palawan, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and Masbate, Mindanao is connected to one of the Indonesian or Malaysian islands, and they mention Sulu, which is a island and a part of the Philippines, not a country.
The Sulu Sultanate was not controlled and administered by the Spanish out of Manila (so it was an independent country) until roughly 5 decades after this song is set. In the past it also controlled Palawan and much of Northern Borneo, but these possessions were stripped away over the centuries. The Philippines as we know it today was not a single political unit (that is controlling all the territory it does now) until the end of the period. The Sultanate itself wasn’t disestablished until 1915 by agreement with the Americans.
Yesn't, after the Napoleonic Wars Prussia incorporated many of the independent German States that make up the current Bundesland Nordrhein-Westpfalen as well as much of the southern area of Niedersachsen however most of the western German States remained entirely independent within the new confederation which replaced the HRE
I'm sorry but there actually is no excuse for having maps that bad. It is literally more effort to create a map that bad than it would be to at least get the shapes of the continents right

1: Argentina has Patagonia. Argentina conquered Patagonia in 1884, so it does not make sense that it has it if we are in 1837-1839
2: Where is Chile?
3: Colombia dominates half of Central America
4: Belize does not exist, or is very large
5: Mexico should have the current states of: California, Texas, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona. The Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty was signed in 1848
5: Alaska should not be from the United States
6: Where is Greenland?
7: Acre should be part of Bolivia (neither the Acre wars nor the Ayacucho treaty have yet begun)
8: The territory of Rio Grande Do Sul should be independent

Emperor Tigerstar is a great replacement for the "History" Channel.
Can't change my mind.
I love your channel keep up the great stuff!
Actually, you can guarantee that this song is based on the map in 1838-1839 (whoops, not 1938-1939, typo) just based on the information in the song! (At least according to Wikipedia) Here's how:
- Norbu was king of Bhutan from 1838-1850, which already limits the timeframe of the song down to those 12 years. (Also, Aden was ceded to the British in 1838, so that's the earliest possible year anyways)
- Central America stopped being a single country in 1841, so the song would be inaccurate if it took place any time after that.
Good points, all! (though you accidentally wrote 19 instead of 18 in the beginning of your comment)
@@jaojao1768 Oh, whoops! Thanks for mentioning that!
Extremely underrated comment
yeah this should be higher up the comments section
The victoria line might suggest 1837 since it was her coronation year. I wrote that below a previous comment, but it seemed to fit with this one as well
Hey, you forgot an error, in the song they call most of the italian peninsula two sicilies, it's strange that they mentioned the papal states, that their map included in the two sicilies
I think that’s more animation error than anything else. Two Sicilies and Papal States both definitely existed in the late 1830s.

6:40 Are you implying that Schleswig was a state on its own? Ok, technically it was a separate state under the Danish crown, but wars could be fought over that distinction. Wait. Wars were actually fought over it.
Yesterday I watched the 19th century geography song and thought when will EmperorTigerstar make a video on this low and behold we have it the next day.
How long would am 18th century "States within the HRE" song last?
I have not watched the _Animaniacs_ (I think I might fall under the category of "Geography Nerd", like you), but I found this to be an informative video... and a remarkably accurate song!
Also, thanks for the _Ground_ _News_ sponsorship! I do not normally watch advertisements, but let's just say I am willing to make an exception for advertisements for websites that will help me understand the hectic world of politics better!
1831, thank you very much.
@@ptolemy2222 Sorry, didn't mean any insult. I got the year from wiki. But it being 1831 makes it even more egregious that they didn't bother separating us from Prussia.
@@SomeRandomDutchGuy1 absolutely no offense taken, no worries.
6:30 - 6:40 Great Britain was mentioned yes,
Saxe-Coburg Gotha was a royal family of the UK from 1837-1914, from then it was the Windsor Royal Family, Queen Victoria is a former Empress of the UK from 1837-1901.
I don't know how you didn't realise this but I am almost certain that 99% of the mistakes made on the map were completely intentional...
I should hope so

Maybe the inaccurate maps (except the borders) were a reference to how the era's maps we're not so accurate in shape either.
In 19th century maps were already quite accurate, even without the satellites.
@@Vengir have to thanks leonardo da vinci and maybe his aliens overlords if they actually exist for the that style of map
I say yes and no to your comment, even though it's your "maybe."
Yes, because the maps then are drawn (with some exemptions) and not captured by the satellites, which didn't exist in the 19th century.
Lore-wise, yakko is proud of the first iteration of this song that he sang, and would jump at an opportunity to sing it again.
7:45 "The South" is probably referring to the Confederate States of America..?
The lyric might be "the sultanate of maldives" instead of "the south and its the maldives"
@@Flazerie Okay. I forgot the show needs to maintain lyrics.
Yeah, the Confederate States didn't exist till 1864. So during the year where this episode is supposed to take place, (1843), the Confederate States never existed. Heck, The Mexican-American war never happened during that time.
8:07 Fascinating how the song covered all of Central and Eastern Europe with the exception of the principalities of Wallachia and Moldova.
"Britain didn't double in size and destroy hte European continent in the 1800's"
If the episode is a spoof of Oliver Twist, we have to assume that the map is from the British perspective, in which case, Europe doesn't matter, or exist.

It seems the crew behind the show was aware of all the nitpicks about the original song and made sure to be as accurate as possible this time, (lyrics wise at least). It’s really cool to see how aware this team is of the fandom around this show.
I mean, the fandom is extremely responsible for this show's revival
I'm pretty sure it said something like ''The Sultanates'' or something because I couldnt really hear south in the original song
7:20 because the HRE is done calling Bremen a free city is inaccurate
I’ve been waiting for this
4:27 What's the problem? This is Brexit. This is what we voted for.
Huh didn't know Mongolia was a really big lake.
The Archduchy of Austria stopped existing in 1806, it became the Kingdom of Austria. Also, the "South and it's the Maldives" is actually the Sultanate of the Maldives.
6:35 Queen Victoria goodbyes Maratha empire 😈
For those who don’t know, from 1823-1841 all the nations of Central America (except Panama and Belize) were united as the Federal Republic of Central America.
I think the New Queen Victoria line refers to the colony of Victoria in Australia, although that wasn't separated from New South Wales until 1851 so that might be wrong.

(2:13) Here's the problem, some sources are so full of bias, misinformation, and inaccuracies that they shouldn't be listed. As to the question of finding a good, reliable source, try something like Reuters or the Associated Press.
I recommend watching Beluga. His channel isn’t about maps and geography but it’s still really funny!
video starts at 2:55
you mean 2:56
Just when I was starting to get yakkos world memes out of my recommended you post this *sigh*
I believe they made the map inaccurate on purpose because they’re trying to represent what actual maps of the 1830s looked like.
No. It wasn't. Maps from 18th to 19th century were way better than the rest (17th century and below), so you're wrong.
This song takes place in 1843 as proved by Wakko saying we were singing from a 150 years from now, the first Animanics episode came out in 1993 so this happened in 1843
Also the map shows the USA in a VERY inaccurate state, the most notable inaccuracy of which is Alaska being part of it.
7:36 maybe the Confederate States?
7:29 Actually, it said "the Sultanates Maldives and Perak".
I just forgot what perak is
the ungodly inaccuracy of the maps may have been done on purpose to represent the fact that maps up until at least the mid to late 19th century had a tendency to be more of an art piece than an actual map
A global map is mostly useless. People would normally use more precised maps
I'm just so excited to see some many freeze frames on my shot!
I'm pretty sure when they were mentioning the south, they were talking about the Confederacy
If so they would be 3 decades too early given the hypothetical setting
If it's supposed to be the CSA, then that would be another inaccuracy since that didn't exist until 1861.

United Kingdom should have mentioned rather than Great Britain - then Ireland would be included
Schleswig in the late 1830s was a part of Denmark. Holstein was part of the defunct HRE in a personal union with Denmark.
I can forgive that they don't mention Sweden-Norway during this period, but that map... that Map!
The map is technically the start of 1800s kinda.
