Apparently these people are found to be on the show in exchange for possibility of a deal. I've read of people getting invites from the producers for some weird stuff they're selling online. and what i found is the entire show is on a prebuilt set to look like the pawn shop since its illegal to do it in the actual shop and make the show. All the people are invited to come in to fill the set for filming
Let's just pretend this isn't scripted. people go to pawn shops because you go in and walk out with money. Simple as that. Sometimes people need cash asap and a pawn shop is there best bet. That's not to say some people are ignorant about ebay or craigslist but the majorjty go to pawn shops just to get the cash asap

ca. 1840, the US & Europe entered the period of mass production. In the US antique is the label given to anything 100 years old or made before 1840.

Once Rick brings in an expert to appraise, the seller is screwed. Con Man Clause brought in the mermaid to one up the seller, to establish Con Man Clause as an expert. "I have an actual Fiji Mermaid, but you don't, so I'm an expert".

Anytime someone says they love something they're selling it's a flat out lie. If you truly love something, you will keep it.
Good point on Ricks part to pass on this one without the knowing the maker the collectors market is thin. People pay obscene amounts only for complete and pristine name brand collectibles. Everything else seems to just sit there.

i think a lot of the time, these types of individuals really do not want to get rid of their favorite thing. they just bring it in for some free info about it... and at worst, a minuscule appraisal for little or no cost to themselves.
