The CarMax Experience Isn't Exactly What You Think

  • I bought a BMW M4 at CarMax, and the experience has been interesting to say the least. Today, my CarMax BMW M4 is going in for service for the second time in the 68 days I’ve had the car... and it’s still not done yet. I would love to say that CarMax sold me an upstanding car without any issues. However, that hasn’t been the case. Here’s what happened.

About this video: I would love to be able to tell you that CarMax sold me the perfect BMW M4 F83; however, that has turned out to not be the case. Over the last couple of months I’ve had the car, I’ve been in for two services/repairs as well as having a third scheduled. So far, it isn’t looking too promising for CarMax and their service center. Let’s talk more about it.
Until you reach 90 days or 4,000 miles, you are in this weird in-between period where you have a $0 deductible warranty provided by CarMax as long as you get your service done at a CarMax location. Truthfully though, you don’t have a choice unless you want to pay for price for service though as MaxCare isn’t active yet either.
The issue is that communication in the service side of things at CarMax hasn't been great. When I purchased the car, I was told that the front plastic vailance on the bumper would be replaced. This part is on back order. No big deal, but I wasn’t called and told about this before showing up the first time for service meaning I wasted most of my day all to not fix the problem that needed to be fixed.
However, what about the parking brake issue? You see, on a hill, it just doesn’t hold at all. The one benefit of the 90 days CarMax only warranty is that it does cover all issues within the first 90 days or 4,000 miles including a weak parking brake. With that, I had them check it out. They agreed it was an issue “adjusted it”, and sent me on my way. As soon as I got home, I tested it, and the issue wasn’t fixed. This could be due to parking brakes on BMWs being weak in general, but it's worth noting in my opinion.
As far as the sales experience at CarMax goes, I don’t really have anything too negative to say. We did the 24 hour at-home test drive. I called ahead to set it up, and the car was ready when we arrived, we drove the crap out of it for 24 hours, I decided I wanted it, and when we came back, it was quick to buy. I felt no pressure, and they tried their hardest to work out an issue I had with my lender.
The purchase process was great, and I will buy another car at CarMax. All of my issues have been with service, and I’m not talking about the people I’ve talked to in service. They have all been great. The issue has been with what is done ‘behind the scenes’ if you will. For example, I wish I would have gotten a phone call about parts not being in stock before I drove to CarMax for my service.
And many of the issues I have had with my M4 could have been prevented. For example, a new parking brake could have been installed, the speaker could have been tested, the software could have been updated all before the car was listed for sale.
You may be wondering why I just randomly mentioned a software update. Well, one day I went to get in the M4, and the gauges were dead. Just not working at all. However, the car started and ran normally. This fixed itself, but happened because the M4’s software was very out of date. A simple update fixes the issue permanently, but it isn’t something CarMax did before purchase.
All in all, CarMax is one of the best purchase experiences I’ve had a dealership. Things changed though when I had to deal with their service department due to the delayed nature of the MaxCare Warranty. Something that wasn’t disclosed to me at any point during the purchase process except in the fine print.
However, once MaxCare kicks in and I can start using my mechanic for repairs, I think things will go a lot more smoothly. Hopefully, it will go as smooth as getting an Aston Martin Vantage for your first exotic car.

I work at Carmax, and as a sales consultant we sell maxcare the way we do, and I’m talking about it starting AFTER the 90 day warranty is completely due to customers usually not wanting to get maxcare if it starts immediately, while they already get a free 90 days. People like the 90 days, THEN, the 5 years of coverage. Otherwise they feel like they’re paying for a service that would be free already for 90 days.

I bought both my e92 M3 in 2018 and my f10 M5 in 2021 from CarMax. Have maxcare on both. Sole reason why I bought them from CarMax. One word of advice is not mention to the warranty company past the 90 days on present issues. The administrator of the warranty will mark off the item as pre existing issue and will black list the item for the entire period of the warranty.

Places like carmax, carvana and vroom don’t test the cars well at all. My mother has had issues with receiving cars with problems with both companies (carvana is far worse. They delivered a car with s broken door handle, how do you miss that)

Cars have over 30,000 parts. What items that irritated you were not disclosed prior to purchase?

Question; I purchased a car from Carmax 10 days ago .. The wheel 🛞 liner came off on the front passenger’s side. According to receptionist at the service repair office said it’s not covered by my warranty… it cost me $300 at Toyota to replace. 2 days ago I notice the bumper paint doesn’t match the rest of my car. I’m embarrassed for noticing so late but I’m frustrated with Carmax for not correcting it before it was considered fully inspected and ok to sell. I spoke to a rep that says I was given the wrong information. Should my warranty cover both the wheel liner and the paint job I will need ?

As a mechanic, I wouldn’t expect the person doing the inspection to have noticed the speaker problem because they’re in a shop turning the speakers on listening for short amount of time just to make sure they work and if it’s an issue like you said, with the sound being pumped in from the engine, that would be difficult for them to hear it’s something you should’ve noticed on your 24ht drive. Also with the parking break they’re testing the parking break on a flat surface in a garage. Generally they don’t get to drive all over Kingdom. Come trying it different parking grades, and everything else it’s done in a garage and you try to pull away at idle if it holds, it’s fine. I think people expect mechanics to be miracle workers when they have limited amount of time to find issues. That’s why you’re given the 90 days to bring it back and get it fixed because everyone knows they can’t find everything wrong. but you bought a BMW I don’t know what you expect

Got a 2012 f150 and after I drove off it over heated had it towed to carmax and they told me 2 weeks for them to look at it after the 2 week they told me it was knocking they told me they were going to replace my engine well two months later finally got it been driving it still has that clicking noise I guess it’s a 5.0 thing but now my driver rear ajar is on and it’s a common Ford thing they’re telling me that they’re going to have to contact the warranty service to see if that’s covered I haven’t even hit 700 miles yet also my Tranny cooling line is leaking so they have to see if that coved cuz I was told that wear and trear
