Hey man, if you see this you may be glad to hear the whole FF Franchise has sold another 10 million units across the past year. Thats all games mind, but I can assure you tons were copies of 7Rebirth and 16. The franchise is just fine, don't buy their scare tactics
Thank god people bring this up. It's like nobody cares about class fantasy anymore, as if all it takes is a guy/gal with cool hair and an attitude. Imagine having a concept like dragoon or dark knight and not being able to anything with that outside of XIV, which is naturally constrained by its necessity to remain balanced - and still we see that XIV jobs very effectively communicate job fantasy through (mostly good) animation and sound design, as well as good lore. It makes me half depressed. But this also goes back to NSP's previous vid where he points out SE is too diverse with its combat system. Dissidia 012 actually had Kain in it and they immediately nailed the aesthetic of the job by building it around aggressive verticality - on their first try. Where is that talent at? What are they doing? I wonder. It's comical that people argue XVI embodies FF elements because an enemy dragoon does the Kain pose, as well as jump techniques... and that's it? If it's so cool, why are we playing as Clive exclusively? Anyway, I'll shut up now.
@@OskarXCI You can still have action combat and be an rpg. The Kingdom Hearts games are still rpgs. Yoshi P was the one who said it had to be action to reach a younger audience not Nomura and Nomura also wasn't behind the combat of FF XVI. With regards to FF XV what are you referring to with people being fine with it leading up to it's release?
I know Yoshi-P said he wanted to drop the Roman numerals of each mainline. But personally I’m kinda mixed on that thought. Sure, it may clear up confusion for new fans on asking what game to play first, but at the same time, I feel like the Roman numerals are just a core aspect of the Final Fantasy brand. Once we get to Final Fantasy XX (which is a LONG TIME away), then I can understand dropping the numbers
I understand what you mean, but it's not susteinable unless you keep your entire playerbase basically "forever". I've heard and read more times than i can remember that a very large number of younger gamers don't touch FF because they see the title say 16 for example and think they should play 15 games before that, and like many people on any type of media comsuption, they don't ask so they never know that each title is self-contained. Of course we know that, but we are not enough to make games on these scale profitable.
I have a feeling FF17 will go through dev hell if it gets outsourced. Similar to how 7 remake started production outside SE and then got further delayed when it went to internal development
I don't think they have any intention of outsourcing a mainline FF game. SE has 4 other creative studios (though one focuses entirely on mobile) - it's just that 1 and 3 have the FF studios in the past. I think the idea here is possibly giving 17 to one of them while CS1 works on FF7R and CS3 works on FF14.
I really don't understand Square reliance on outsourcing so heavily, wouldn't it be better to build a stronger foundation and then outsource for texture-related work or maybe world layouts, etc? It seems like the outsourcing square currently is heavily tied to development.
Having Natsuko Ishikawa as the next major FF writer would be great! I also agree on CS1 unqiue ability on world building. Personally I am not picky on who ends up in charge of the next game. I am just hoping they knock it out of the park and with it, and give us all a positive game experience that will stay with us for a long time.🙌🏽😁 My greatest wish would be to have every single CS designate the the best people to come together and work a common game someday as well.❤ Thanks for sharing you insights on the subject NSP!🙌🏽🤩💕
I don't think anyone should be writing anything unless they have an idea they NEED to get out that keeps them awake at night, not just because they're a good name employed by the company. When that happens we'll all be blown away. Not everybody works well with somebody too, its not like maths. That's why Sakaguchi, George Lucas or James Cameron returning to their respective franchises would be a disaster, they're only human and have already said what they wanted to say.
Completely agree. The industrialization of franchises kills creativity because it's all about release out as much content as possible in as short a time as possible.
Well... That's just not how writing in most types of media works. The writer rarely even decides the story - that's the work of the producer or director, depending on work culture and the type of media. Or there is a whole writers room collectively working on the idea - which honestly is when some of the greatest magic happens. The writers job is then to put those ideas on paper, in a way that is coherent and makes sense. From a creative POV, just sitting around and waiting for inspiration to strike is also just... A terrible idea. You'd barely ever get anything done. Limitations is what breeds creativity, and in order to discover those limitations you actually need to sit down and work on the project.
idk, Sakaguchi proven that he can adapt and evolve the franchise further. he always come up with new fresh thing, he knew what players want, and how to blow their mind. and Sakaguchi is great at finding unique talent, which in result they were able to make a great art, worldbuilding and music like no other meanwhile the other director ruined final fantasy, made it not feel like final fantasy, as if they're ashamed to be final fantasy. as if they're making game to impress bethesda or cdProjektRed or something.
@@jensenraylight8011 Tbh here, dude: Sakaguchi is a Ioser. Idk what happened during the FF years, who REALLY was responsible for the good parts of FF while he was working there, but the fact that Mistwalker failed to accomplish even the tinies bit of relevancy shows that Sakaguchi is, in fact, NOT talented, nor an integral part of what used to make FF good. He's no Houser, he's no Hidetaka Miyazaki. None of his games outside of square had success, even tho he was backed by people like Akira Toriyama or the artist of Vagabond and Slam Dunk (forgot his name). He failed so hard he was forced to make mobile games, and his mobile games were an absolute failure.
@@xiiir838 People change, you'll get a cold feet as well if you direct a failing movie that resulted in the bankruptcy of your company you'll think twice before making any risky decision. not to mention, Lost Odyssey was thrown into Xbox jail and rot in xbox hell, that game didn't deserved to be treated like that, he was caught in the crossfire between sony and xbox. i think that's the case with Sakaguchi. also, he is no longer have deep resources like the time when he was in Squaresoft. FF4-10 are still very relevant to this day, that was quite an achievement, Most directors out could only dream about that kind of Crazy achievement not to mention other game like Chrono Trigger is a cultural phenomenon in gaming. don't undermine his work like that, he already proven that he is more than capable of making Legendary level game.
I just want Nomura to direct a new and original mainline entry before he retires. I'm all for fresh blood like Ishikawa being involved too and Shadowbringers is one of my favorite FF stories but I would also love a swan song to the legacy that Nomura had a huge impact on even though a strong amount of FF fans refuse to admit it.
be careful, the nomura haters might come out of the woodwork and ask why he didnt off himself already. either hand him FFXVII or give him like a FFXV-2 or FFXV alternate timeline retelling or something. He already dug himself a grave when he admitted he doesnt wanna make video games until he dies and wants to retire at 60, thats only enough time for 1.5 games, and one of those being KH4 and FF7 Pt3. so idk whats going to happen. hes going to retire with an awkwardly unfinished new saga of KH4.
Like I said before.... Final Fantasy needs to feel like a Final Fantasy. It has nothing to do with new generations. Crystals, world ending events, a cast of characters that are emotionally charged, job classes, steampunk with some sci-fi elements, airships, eidolons and last and most important......A happy ending with sad notes. FF7 and FF9 being the greatest examples of endings. FF7 was proof that you don't need all these elements to feel like Final Fantasy, but you at least need most of it and if you take something out, you need to put a equivalent to it back in.
Also don't forget about party members. The best parts of the FF games was having a bunch of friends to go on the adventure with. Not make it a solo game with some AI helping you (FF16).
This might be a bold statement, but I want FF17 to be set in a genre that has never been done before in a FF game. We done the Sci-fi with FF13. We done the Medieval with 16. We done god-knows how many High Fantasy settings. I think either a primitive-setting with Gods, monsters, and magic or modern-day with populated cities (kind of like Insomnia before it got all fucked up)
With a story written by Ishikawa, the battle system of FF7R and a unique setting like FFX, FF17 would have the potential to go down as one of the greatest of all time
I personally think the battle system for FF7R really needs a lot of wrinkles ironed out. I like the idea on paper, but in execution its rough around the edges.
@@KAvanAlten For the most part, the Nvidia leaks have been pretty accurate, I'll take that FF Tactics remaster, but they can keep the FF9 remake to themselves.
@@UltimateGattai It was already pointed out earlier that shortly after that list came out, Tactics Orge remaster came out, and the Final Fantasy IX series, although not officially announced by SE itself, was announced by the producer of it. The list simply was mistaken on the exact nature of both projects. In an interview to Yoshi P about the new FF expansion they came to the question of the allusion to IX in the game was deliberate for a soon to happen IX remake, in which he clearly denied this. If a remake was indeed to be happening soon, hos response should have been different like 'please look forward to it'. And if in 5 to 10 years such a remake comes, it will be nice, I am not against them coming. My point is just: at the moment that list came to us, they were not in development. That has likely not started yet.
@@KAvanAlten When Epic Games launched their own "SteamDB" they leaked a bunch of stuff including multiple builds of FF9R being on their servers. Yoshi P also wouldn't say "look forward to it" because it hasn't "officially" been announced yet despite appearing in multiple official places. Last thing to note too: the Nvidia leak wasn't a list of games they thought were in development, it was a list of projects that were tested on the GeForce Now servers. There was a lot of weird stuff, some of it still makes little sense, but after all the murmurs in the background and then the Epic leak? It definitely exists, there's absolutely no doubt.
Great job brother, I’ve been a Final Fantasy fan since I first played Final Fantasy II (FF IV) on the SNES back when I was in elementary school. I hope FF 17 goes back more to its roots. Take care brother 🙏🏼
I truly hope Hamaguchi will direct a future mainline FF at some point. Its obviously not gonna be 17 but maybe 18 I guess. My man straight up brought back world maps in almost the perfect way and its gonna get even better with airships in Remake part 3. So yeah I feel like he 100% knows what hes doing and having him do a fully original world for another mainline game would be super interesting
I'd love to play a FF title which does turn some well known facts/lore upside down a bit. Like a storyline where you play an MC who teaches you the world is bad and you're chased for trying to do good but instead in reality they're the bad guy and everyone else just tries to survive/go after the bad guy to bring back peace to the world. And maybe if it's two games in part 2 you play the same game but with the other side as your party, battling your previous self. FF XVI did an amazing job with turning well known world building lore completely upside down, in this case "hey I can wield magic so I'm a chosen one and super special and precious". It's amazing, it blew me away how smooth the transition worked in 16. So I'd really like to follow changes like that, let's see what comes out of it
I wish Rebirth had gotten the *monetary* success it deserved. It’s a masterpiece, but because its sales didn’t meet expectations, Square is looking at it like a failure. Square should be celebrating releasing a game of that caliber.
Hopefully it will have a long tail. I think for many people it is a tough sell because of all the time investment it is asking from them, because you really should play and finish Remake in advance. For example, I picked up the game and started replaying Remake because I wanted to get the full experience and haven’t got around to even start Rebirth yet. 😅
@@Gerbil-vm1fp many people who have played Remake haven’t even upgraded to a PS5 yet. And in Japan handhelds like the Switch are dominating the market. If FF7 Remake/Rebirth would come to the next Switch I’m sure there’d be a huge audience waiting for it.
Once it's on PC I hopeit does reach those expectations. I would've only bought a PS5 for rebirth so I decided to wait. Same for many others but I'm sure they considered this in their financial forecasting for this game.
@@dmccarroll22 they really should have expected this when they decided to release the game in 3 parts. Sequels never do as well because they're gated behind the first part. Part 3 will be even worse unless they put out the whole trilogy on multiple platforms on release
No offense but have you guys ever thought of the reason that it didn't do well or sell by their standards is because a lot of people didn't actually think it was good? It was okay. personally I found it beautiful to look at but the gameplay was too restrictive and the progress pacing ridiculous, the characters also acted way too cartoony that It was offputting. I really think that's why it didn't sell like hotcakes as they thought it would. The only thing that's carried it was because it was a beloved final fantasy IP.
Final Fantasy at the height of its power was always on the cutting edge of technology and immersive storytelling. Not chasing trends, not banking on nostalgia. But setting trends and breaking boundaries. In one way or another, the series has been playing catch-up since FFX. If it wants to stay relevant, it has to have the courage to do what hasn’t been done before. It has to make a leap of faith as impactful as the first time we witnessed the seamless transition from gameplay to cinematic in FFVII. The story and gameplay are important, but it’s the unique integration with cutting edge technology that I believe can bring the series back to the forefront. Stop trying to copy other properties and trends. Break new ground!
Yeaah I want something confusing and akin to Angel's egg by yoshitaka amano. Truly put in the fantasy in the name and as well as the final like as if it's some sort of apocalypse. Blood red waters, moonless nights, floating biblical angels. Make a world out of those unhinged prophecies. Idk😂
If they bring back Sakaguchi, they will realise what they've been missing all this time - the charm of FF, that none of the games have achieved, IMO, since his departure
I am confident with Hamaguchi being the director moving forward for CS1 if they decide to do a new FF title. Ishikawa would also be a great add for a new FF title as well. Either way, Yoshi-P is absolutely correct in saying that this industry needs new and young blood to come up with the “new generation” of FF. Curious to see where they will go or who will be handling FF17.
The key to a Final Fantasy that's GOOD is that: They're all a bunch of subplots from characters who come from different sub-genres meeting at a convergence point leading to the greater narrative. FF7 had Barret, Tifa, Cloud, Aeris and Yuffie, and not forgetting Vincent's, and all of them had their own stories with their own villains, essentially (except for Tifa, who was just a victim and shared both Barret and Cloud's). FFX was the same and the crown jewel, FF9, was the absolute master of this. You even had INDIVIDUAL CUTSCENES for 9.
@@joshua42777 Sorry to mention. That's the name of the video. You can search it with that name. It's just a video showing character ideas from Square Enix.
Final Fantasy XVI is definitely my favourite one and unfortunately the last of it's kind. So I'm extremely happy and thankful to developers for FFXVI. 325hours in first playtrough. NG+ is waiting for me, after PS5 Pro upgrade. Love this game.
@@OskarXCI Just because I'm not sprinting, I'm enjoying. Everything's ending in the end, so I want to enjoy every moment, calm scenery, beautiful art design, most epic fights, lore of the world, music... everything. Every game is one time per life. Every game in entire series is unique, unique world, story, characters, overall mood and I'm enjoying this one because it's art in many ways in a way I love.
Man I would LOVE if 17 looked anything like that CGI tech video with the 2 women fighting in a cybernetic japanaese setting. A fantasy setting that looks like Japan or Asian inspired would be refreshing for the series. X had some elements of that kinda, that game had the best and most original/unique world to me
@@lordaathras Yoko Taro has already been very clear about not wanting to work on final fantasy games, because it would put too many limitations and expectations on him. He wants the creative freedom to tell his weird esoteric stories, and with FF, especially a mainline game, he just would not be given that freedom.
Who I would like to direct the next entry? How about the man who made Lost Odyssey and this franchise what it is today. Let's have Sakaguchi, the king of Final Fantasy back.
They need to bring back Agni and her world. I was so excited about it and then super disappointed when it turned out to be nothing more than a tech demo.
Man, I just want a FF8 Remake so badly, it almost hurts. With some of the key people, who worked on the original, like Nomura, Kitase or Nojima - that 8 gets the same treatment as 7 does (which I don't think will ever happen). This game, like Ben Starr often states, is a classic and deserves better than the cheap "remaster" from 2019. They have so many opportunities today - working on the plot, tie up loose ends, deeper character developement, reworking the battle system with its draw and junction mechanics, creating a better game experience. Also, the music in this game is one of Uematsu's finest, it needs a proper uplifting in the same veins as 7 Remake. Even if many people are unsatisfied how the developers handled the 7 Remake project, they can learn from their mistakes and make better choices for 8 Remake. Ok, let me dream a little bit longer :(
A FF completely focused on exploration and airships would be incredible, Rebirth captured a lot of that, also Square start reading current fantasy novels and get a feel for what its grabbing people in the underground scenes of the modern world too.
I'm pretty sure someone on the FFXVI writing team had read the stormlight archives because... The similarities are just a little bit too striking lol. People compare it to Game of Thrones and... Yeah, I see a little bit of that. But I see way more of Brandon Sanderson in the FFXVI world, lol. Not saying it's a good or bad thing. Just noting its presence. Then again, most of Sanderson's work reads like an anime (even though he insists that he doesn't watch anime) so maybe it's coincidental after all, and the vibes just happened to come full circle.
If Ishikawa did 17...that would be amazing. Her writing is so good. She understand characters and plot development. I'd just hope the game design could return to classic FF with world maps and all. Then take personal battle system as a base idea of how to do things.
Better not be another damn online game. Also the medieval style is played out, I always prefer the final fantasies that try for more modern settings as they're less overused than medieval and generally nicer to look at too.
@@Vaquix000 no FF has been pure medieval. It's always had technology mixed in. You're saying you like 7 and 8. And both online games had fantastic stories, with 14 honestly having ones of the best in the series.
I'd love to see Hamaguchi as director as well, this guy just gets it. In the scenario writing seat(s), my picks would obviously be none other than Hironobu Sakaguchi the lord himself and that crazy bastard Yoko Taro. Music ? Keiichi Okabe and Nobuo Uematsu for additional tracks. Could even bring Yoko Shimomura for some insane boss battle tracks. Combat could go either way, the FF7R route or full on turn-based combat. Square Enix should watch closely at what Clair Obscur and Metaphor are doing right now, bringing back the formula this time around and going back to what made Final Fantasy what it was in the first place could be a great idea.
I disagree. He's too edgy and he dislikes conventional tropes too much. FF needs to go back to its roots, not put some empowered autist in charge of it so it can become even more different.
@@Rivershield isn't that what they did with FFXVI though? When did we at least got a mature FF? I personally think Yoko Taro would be able to tell a compelling storyline even if it means to break such tropes.
I really don't want this. He has his own very unique and offbeat style, but it's not FF. I feel he's also pretty hit and miss. The Nier raid in FFXIV for example was pretty weak. If anything he should be working in Nier Automata 2. It's one of S-E's biggest games in recent memory and it's nuts that after 7 years a sequel is still nowhere to be seen.
Honestly think hiring "fans" could be a hot mess. Mass Effect: Andromeda was mainly developed by fans of the ME trilogy, and we saw how that turned out. I think FFXVII should be led by a less established team within Square, but partially staffed by newer hirers. That way we get the best of both worlds. As for the game itself, gameplay HAS to build off of the VIIR system. Its the best mix of real-time and turnbased that's possible right now. XVI was a good game, but its combat was bad for the series. Personally, I'd love a setting that pulls inspiration from regions like the Middle East or Southeast Asia. Natsuko Ishikawa would be a great lead writer for XVII. However, also think dropping the numbering scheme is a bad idea.
Man, just imagine Yoko Taro doing something like FF6... But you play as Kefka in an alternative timeline, where he fails in the critical moment... and something even worse happens, and this time your goal is to destroy the world, again :)
Great idea, I would instantly buy that. I always think the bad guys are the most interesting in games and movies. A long long time ago I actually played some kind of FF-6 mod or rather PPG maker ripoff game where you played as an imperial soldier.
That reminds me of Assassins Creed 3 where you start as Connors dad, getting to like him for a few hours only to find out he's a bad templar 😂 gosh that revelation blew me away so hard, I'd love experiencing something similar again ❤ also a storyline where you play an MC who teaches you the world is bad but instead in reality they're the bad guy and everyone else just tries to survive/go after the bad guy to bring back peace to the world. FF XIV did very amazing with turning well known world building lore, in this case "hey I can wield magic so I'm a chosen one and super special and precious" completely upside down. LOVE it! It's just a tad too depressing for me to full heartedly adore the title 😅
He was asked about making a FF game in an interview. He said, and I'm Paraphrasing, "Not in a million years". Too much expectations, the brand is too heavy, too important, he wouldn't have full creative freedom. He's completely fine doing his own thing and getting praised for it. So no, although it sound interesting, he does not want to do one. Also, his games are always super meta. Do we really want a FF game braking the fourth wall and characters saying and doing weird stuff because they "know" they're in a videogame?
@@xiiir838 Tbh i think it would be great if Kefka did it (break the fourth wall). His "insanity" would be a perfect fit for such a thing plus would allow Yoko to do, well, everything. As for would it fit the "numbered titles", idk if done right I think it could be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Then again, maybe I am just getting old and the current style of mainline FF games just doesn't reach me the same way 6-10 did. Oddly enough, in the last decade+ , aside of FFXIV shadowbringers (Emet-Selch), the only game (in FF franchise) that managed to reach me was Stranger of Paradise, however odd that might sound.
Shiro Machakiro will be working on Final Fantasy 17. He is a newbie but has an amazing background on Gaming. Shiro has what it takes to deliver on FF17. Shiro has a Master on coding he has the expertise to fix any bug the game may have.
I think FFXVIII should take a crack doing a return to a FFVIII style world but with some more customization allowed. Let us do character creation this time. Go ahead and gives strong 2ndry characters with a party of three or four accompaniment. Decent graphics but it doesn’t have to be state of the art. Not crazy, colorful or goofy like FFXIII. Perhaps model the game around Mass Effect 2 but with better melee combat. I would love to see a FF game with a true romance system.
Best case scenario for me is Creative Business Unit 1 for FF17. Would be really cool to see Hamaguchi direct something brand new where he's not limited by source material/fan expectations. Also might be time for Mitsuto Suzuki to finally get his chance to be the primary composer on a mainline title. Worst case scenario is they try to contract an external studio again, because that never works out well for anybody.
Look, I get it but since these things take so long to make, remember what was hot when this thing was on the drawing board? Back then Game of Thrones could do no wrong and it was considered the revival of the whole fantasy genre. Now several seasons of GoT later and a bad ending that left everyone with a sour taste in their mouth we look at it differently. But at the time on the whiteboard it must have looked like a genius move.
@@philippedaigneault366 that's the problem; Final Fantasy used to set trends not chase them. The fact that it wanted to emulate Game of Thrones is not a good thing
@@geoffreychauvin1474 Agreed, they used to be trend setters instead of trend chasers but as the price for making these things is so high now that they need to sell 5 million just to break even. That's why you hear "did not meet expectations" so much. "Expectations" have become way too high. My question is always where is all that money going? I just wish they did more smaller projects instead of always betting the house on "bigger" but more conservative projects.
For me, I really want them to get crazy imaginative with the look of the world. FF has always had the most inspiring locations like in FF10 and 13. So I'd really like to see the direction of some kind of wild fantasy world.
Sadly he doesn't want to direct a FF title. And I think is for good, my guy has great ideas, but he doesn't know how to make gameplay and all his games are always too meta
Shout out to you for using that thumbnail. I don't know if it was supposed to be a homage to the last week of ffbe global's life or not but in any case thanks for bringing putting it. Damn I'm gonna miss that game...
Maybe this is a hot take but how about they bring back Hironobu Sakaguchi and have him Direct a team of new comers. I think it would be such an achievement to see the master come back and use the new talent to really make something special.
@@xiiir838 not a good creator? Considering that he made Final Fantasy 1-5 from scratch and made a huge mark on 6, put the team together for Chrono Trigger, and Hired on as well as gave creative license to and input on Final Fantasy Tactics I'd say that's a bit too harsh. I'd say that he got lost in the woods trying to create "something new" with Mistwalker Studios but at this point coming back to his roots I don't think he'd foul it up. Certainly couldn't do worse than FFXIII at the very least.
I hope a different studio that includes some of Luminous Studios is working on the new FFXVII. The people that worked in Luminous were definitely capable of working on new FFs and meeting fan expectations. The big issue is leadership of any studio that would work on the new game.
I love FF14 (still playing) and I loved FF16. Also, one thing to note about FF sales is that most of those low sales numbers come from them to being on PS5 only at launch. FF15 sold so much because it was on PS4, and how many people owned PS4s? As of October 2024, over 117 million PS4 units have been sold. Compare that to PS5. When Final Fantasy 16 dropped, there were only 21 million PS5 units sold worldwide. That is 1/7th the amount of PS4 owners, so naturally, you would expect your product to sell proportionally. If FF16 released on Xbox and Steam day 1, they would have sold many more copies. I don't think it has anything to do with the audience's interest, but their capability to play the game. Most gamers are playing PC now, so to ignore the PC audience at launch is an obvious pitfall in my opinion, but something most people seem to ignore when discussing poor sales number. Not everyone can go out and buy a $600 console, not in this economy. With that said, I'm not against trying something new. A new person, with a new vision could give us a real treat. We have no idea what type of talent Square Enix has working for them, so letting someone else take the reigns could be great. So as long as they let Soken do the music 😇.
The hype for 15 was something else. A lot of people I know personally bought it, even those who don’t play FF. On the other hand I know no one personally who owns or played 16. 😅
shadowbringer and endwalker had me hooked from beginning to end, it was a beautiful story. if she is working on a mainline final fantasy 17, im preordering immediately.
Do NOT drop the numbers. Dropping the number is bad idea. Everyone knows it is separate titles.. the zoomers will figure it out if they like the game design
See? As time goes on, more and more of what made a ff game, a ff game is being taken away. Pretty soon the words 'final' and 'fantasy' won't be in future titles😂😂
"everyone knows that" no, no they don't. I have had to explain to almost everyone in my friend group that I game with that they don't have to play the first 13 games to understand XIV
There's a mechanic in book series called The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews in which waves of tech and magic wreak havoc on the world that I think could make for a cool dynamic system for a future FF game in which some of your abilities work sometimes while the rest work at times. Maybe something in the vein of the day nigh cycle of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest where besides a change in place styles you also see a difference in the monsters and environment.
Turn-based combat isn't dead, this has been proven by SEGA and their SMT+PERSONA series, ... I want FF17 to be that. How? There was a game announced this year called: [ Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ], this game is what I want the future of the Final Fantasy series to look like.
About new younger team handling next mainline: Atlus has done that with Shin Megami Tensei V, it was made mostly by newcomers, while veterans handled Metaphor: ReFantazio. And while it had some problems(some of which were fixed in Vengeance) and it shows some level of immaturity in game design, overall the game was well received both by new players and old fans alike. It added some fresh ideas to the old SMT formula, while preserving the identity of the series. I personally am very excited about SMT VI from the same team after playing SMT V Vengeance. So bringing new people that grew up with the franchise and understand it from perspective of the fans, might work and there has already been a precedent of that recently.
See i couldn’t finish SMTV…i got pretty far (i think the final area) but i just got bored…while i love the wackiness of the monsters and how they’ve got all kinds of personalities…having them be your main npcs was a bit much for me. Sure there were actual NPCs and they were there for all the story beats…most of the time you were talking to monsters and i guess it just felt kinda lonely (which i imagine was the point). Idk at some point i was just not wanting to continue the game and i’m not one to usually quit out early
@@Wheeliam_Ironside That's a problem I have with SMT in general. I was bored in 3 as well although the fiend fights and difficulty level kept me interested enough to get close to endgame. 4 was probably a high point for the series from a story perspective but I didn't get that far in. Being on the 3DS didn't help when I had games like Bravely Default and the Fire Emblem games to play.
@@Harkz0r i agree with that yeah…the way the strategy works can be really fun…it’s SO close to being my thing. Which is why i love Metaphor so much it keeps that fun but has a lot more substance for story and it doesn’t feel as time constrained as the persona series…though that element is still there. But yeah if you felt like me give Metaphor a shot and lemme know how it goes
It's not even understanding Final Fantasy, Square Enix shoudl look at Atlus and the upcoming Expedition 33 and ask them why these seem to be very well recieved/anticipated. Sad truth is FF16 was only anticipated because people were curious to see what Yoshida would do with the franchise, and while it was alright, I would argue it's definitely not memorable, they use way to many shortcuts that they use in their FF14 MMO and honestly the longer the series goes on the more the lack of polish when it comes to the narrative becomes noticeable. While they may have a "lore book" for certain series, it does not feel like they actually take the time to consider if these scenarios make sense, rather then push the scenario in question to move the plot rather than consider how it would actually be given the circumstances. One scenario I always go back to with 16 is that is never really made any sense for someone to actively be destroying the crystals and yet there was nothing done to really fortify the crystals, they in essence let it happen because the story determined that these crystals needed to be destroyed to further the plot even if it didn't make sense as to how "easy" it would be. Another thing I dislike about FF16 is how they deemed it a "mature" story as if this was a cut different from the other series, but every Final Fantasy has a mature story that doesn't require "blood" or "cursing" to make it "mature". Starting from FF2 you have a kingdom that tries to kill you, you survive and end up in a reistance to take back your kingdom while people sacrifice themselves for the cause. In FF4 you are part of a corrupt Kingdom seeking the crystals to further their cause and question your loyalty to the kingdom, in FF6 you are again in a resistance to stop a crazy clown from destroying the world, in FF7 you are part of a "eco-terrorist" group that seeks to destroy reactors taking the life force of a planet, the whole convenience at the cost of the planet's life force. In FF8 you are child soldiers trained to take down a Sorcerer, in FF10 you are part of a pilgrimage in which a Summoner has to sacrifice themselves in order to push away "Sin". In FF12 you are part of a resistance to help a Princess reclaim her place in royalty while going through political driven situations to overcome the odds. But I honestly always just found it a weird remark to call 16 "mature' when all it did was add gratuitous blood and cursing, that doesn't make a series "mature" it just makes it edgy. If you were to compare the concept of "mature' to a series then any of the Persona Games would far outweigh the "maturity" of Final Fantasy 16. I hope whoever does helm 17 takes a page from Atlus and looks at Expedition 33 to understand that a "turn based" game can work, they just have to be able to tell an engaging story that keeps the player invested.
I feel like the "these games don't meet expectations" worries are the easiest thing on the fucking planet to fix. 1. "Expectations" are vague. Just because some subhuman scum-sucking investors "expected" a game to sell 85 gorrilion copies, spawn 8 years of netflix tie-ins, and create a 20 year live-service platform which makes 4 billion a year on some stupid battlepass doesn't mean the game didn't recoup its own development costs. 2. Focus on releasing for as many platforms as you can swing, and since the new switch is going to be more powerful, launch there as well. FF16 probably would have surprised in sales if they weren't so determined on exclusivity. If Sony wants an exclusive title for their platform, let them actually pay for it instead of taking deals which only cause Square Enix pain.
I feel like this has been ever since Square Enix has been a thing. They were chasing that CoD money and now that Fortnite money and forget who they made games for. Turn based JRPGs are niche but some of them like FF7 made mainstream and became very popular. Also the emphasis of high quality graphics over cool art style (like Metaphor) is bloating the budgets.
I absolutely love Stellar Blade! It’s a truly amazing game overall I think. I’ve played through it twice just to get both endings. The soundtrack literally was stellar too.
Well, the idea of Ishikawa working on FF17 is pretty solid because post Endwalker/Dawntrail's writing has had a huge Ishikawa shaped hole in it. Her absence is the only reason I can see for the state of FF14's narrative at this point.
For some time now, we’ve been witnessing significant transformations, not only within Final Fantasy and Square Enix but also across the entire gaming industry, including major players like Sony PlayStation, Ubisoft, and many others. Changes are already being implemented, and the industry is undergoing a series of shifts. Changes aren’t ahead, they already in motion!
The next final fantasy should return to turn based. Turn based still sells. Look at Persona, Trails, and the recent success of Metaphor! Also, make Ishikawa the lead story writer. Shadowbringers was a banger.
A single player mainline FF will NEVER gain new gen z audiences because that audience has grown in a completely different environment than we did in the 90s. FF will only be successful with that audience if it dramatically changes its identity to be a different kind of game that it’s no longer FF. I’m not talking about third person real time vs turn based. I’m talking about FTP, micro transactions up the wazoo, seasonal expansions, etc etc. In other words, if SE wants FF to continue being successful among FF fans without changing its identity, they need to focus on smaller budget FF games to keep that old fanbase engaged while creating a new IP for the new generations of gamers. Single player FF games will never resonate with kids who are growing up playing online free games like Fortnite and Genshin Impact that are endlessly evolving.
@@remzsauntie9471 That’s because Elden Ring was something new. FS games were niche but finally broke through with Elden Ring. FF broke through their niche audience into mainstream with FF7, over two decades ago. FF is not new, it’s a decades old franchise that casuals are no longer impressed by.

Put Creative Unit 3 in charge of story/setting/characters/etc from now on. FF16 had one of the best stories ever from a FF game despite its linear/limited gameplay.
@@geoffreychauvin1474I never claimed it was the most original, but it’s still one of the most cohesive/well-told/well-acted/well-written/etc FF stories, so I still think it’s one of the best. Original doesn’t necessarily = good if it’s not written/told well.
@@xiiir838 Yeah I’ll admit they did throw a lot at you pretty quickly and just kind of said “Here’s this big world full of multiple kingdoms and magic, here’s what’s going on right now, have fun”. They did their best to explain it via Vivian’s lore monologues between acts of the story, but there’s just a lot to cover and they didn’t have time/resources to explore it all in great detail. The writing and characters really helped flesh it out and bring it to life though, and that’s what I love about it compared to most other FF games. *And I personally really like the designs of the summons and how they handled the lore of them and made them central and essential to the plot
it would be quite interesting if Tetsuya Nomura and Yoko Taro were in charge of either a new FF, a new Kingdom Hearts, a new DrakenNier, or even an entirely new IP. No matter who may become involved in the future with the franchise, I only hope for them to give it the proper amount of love, care and respect it deserves. That is all I'm asking for.
I do not believe it's the fault of Square Enix or the series for the unmet sales expectations as Rebirth was the best one they've made yet. I just think the community is toxic and ungrateful.
I wonder what the last mainline FF game I'll see released in my lifetime will be. FF XXIXmaybe? Will I still be playing games at that age? Would I even care?
After playing Metaphor: ReFantazio and with the upcoming Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, I don't even care about Final Fantasy anymore. I just want Kingdom Hearts 4

Before I begin my comment, just know that I have nothing agaisnt Naoki Yoshida, i think FF XIV is one of the most ambitious MMORPG video games of all time and its target demographic is not just MMO fans but people that enjoy the FF series as well. How ever, the largest problem with FF XVI is that it was developed by a guy that carries the whole MMO core philosophy of design in his creative work. Its great as an MMO for being the type of game that it is, but when working on something that is supposed to carry on the legacy of the FF brand main series, this is where it goes sour. FF XVI had an immensely satisfying start, but it unfortunately devolved into its MMO conventions which I think turned alot of longtime fans away, not to mention that it was a single player action game. I think for FF XVII, it would probably be better suited in the hands of creative division 1 because they do realistically understand more the DNA of what constitutes a offline jrpg for this beloved franchise. Or it can even a brand new team to breath life back into the series with a different perspective based on experience playing the many games of the past. Also, congratulations at achieving 100k subs NSP. I am happy to be a long time subscriber of yours.
I'm gonna be that guy and rant up and essay. Although, I guess my TLDR, would be, there's a reason why many people favor FFVI, VII, IX, and X. I'd also put FFIII and IV in that pool as well. I think and believe those games have key ingredients to what makes Final Fantasy, "Final Fantasy". If a new studio were to be making a new FF game, I'd hope they look to those games for 99% of their inspiration. While I have my opinions, I'm holding out on being "definitive" with FF until Remake part 3 comes out. Personally, I'd rather see CS1 continue with mainline FF games. If they want new blood, higher new people and promote others from within CS1. Handle the lineage like they did from Sakaguchi to Kitase, but for other roles and not just Directer. Focus on making that studio "lean and mean" so to speak. I feel like working in Unreal Engine is a piece to that puzzle. Are they really going to scrap a third engine for a new FF title? FF as a series is already all over the place with many of its parts. Giving the IP to other studios would further dilute it. I've seen Yoko Taro be brought up. While I am a fan of the games he's directed, I feel like FFXVII under his belt would be another DrakenNier game. Also, I think they should keep the numerical naming. So long as the game has several party members that I can control and switch between. Has elemental weaknesses/resistances, ATB, buffs/debuffs, towns, some sort of Job system. Whether it be like the one in FFV, FFVII's Materia system, or LR's Schemata system. I'd also prefer the continued use of the Stagger system. Summons are also a must, with being able to actually summon them in battle. Seeing Dwarfs make a reappearance would be cool. Moogles, Tonberries, Chocobo's etc. Making items necessary in combat would also be cool. Map traversal is important too, land, air, and sea. I'd prefer Action combat but Turn-Based combat is fine. Lastly, I'm beginning to think costumes are important as well. My laundry list is complete for now.
this is where a creative unit or 2 that could serve AA level 3yrs dev game should be implemented. this channel has already provided much of the options that squareenix could implement. having the 3 and a half long discussion and the atlus topic in the forefront. but at the head of this, they really should place the "new sakaguchi" first before even planning out anything.
Oh mah gawd I hope they don't mess up with who they are choosing for this... They should choose me because unironically I got good ideas & a world already built they could use as the setting & even the concepts: which are concepts that Nomura been wanting to use for a long time (since FF15) but didn't figure out how.

I mean, excluding the MMOs. We had XIII for an entire console generation. XV and 7remake came out on the PS4 generation. At this rate. We will possibly get one more during the PS5 generation. Which is likely to be FF7R3. Just to keep that from being on three different console generations.
With Square agreeing to release Hironobu Sakaguchi's Fantasian Neo Dimension (and depending on it's success) perhaps we see Mistwalker and Square collaborate to bring new FF story together...
I don't care about all the nitpicky details. I don't care if the next entry has a number in it. I don't even are if the graphics are cutting-edge or basic. I just want another Final Fantasy that recaptures what made the series so fun and thought-provoking. These last couple games in 16, 7 remake/rebirth, and Origin, have made me feel like the devs and directors are pandering to a group of masses that don't actually care about the fundamental concept behind FF as a series. I don't mind a little swearing, implied sensuality, violence, and drug usage in a good JRPG, especially if it's actually relevant to a certain point, but I was disappointed with how "hand-out" the 7 Remake felt, and the characters felt far more like manifestations of modern anime tropes rather than believable and relatable characters, and 16 basically was just a blood and gore and sex and swear festival, with FF tied in. I know these are all probably hot takes, I will not waste time reading scathing remarks or even compliments, I'm just stating my opinion. I've been a fan of the series since literally it's beginning. I've seen all the games, both mainline and spin offs, I've seen the movies, the anime, read the manga, I've been in love with this franchise and everything it stood for. But when 16 came out, it was the first time I seriously considered the possibility that I wasted money and time on an FF game. And that's even considering 15, the "unfinished FF". This realization hit me like a freight train. I've been a fan of this franchise since my childhood. Its stories have helped me navigate a lot of the murkier areas of my life where mentors and authority figures failed to help me. To realize that, now, all of a sudden, this series that I had come to love so dearly and rely upon for the highest quality entertainment (and sometimes enlightenment), has begun to disappoint me the same as all the other drivel in media out there, saddened and depressed me intensely. I don't want to say it, but I have to consider seriously that maybe the time when quality entertainment was within reach is gone, and I sincerely hope that in upcoming projects the devs prove me wrong, otherwise FF will be dead to me. I just hope whatever new team works on 17 and the series from here on out, knows and understands what the game came from, and what it's been through, and can grasp what it will take, not just to make a game that catches the interest of new generations, but sends members of the past generation down a nostalgia trip. If it veers too far off course, it's gonna be just a bunch of games with the Final Fantasy name slapped on them.
They could ask the fan base what they like and what they hate about each game, then bring a team of veteran and rookie creator to create a game. It also may help to ask the fans on what bring them back.
I think for the combat of Final Fantasy 17 they should go back to the base and try some new mechanics to make it more fun. And go away from the Game of Thrones ecstatic.
@@youronewingedangel It's just that people have Game of Thrones fatigue, and a newer aesthetic with some complimentary inspirations from other fantasy franchises would be good for the next Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy will never be an RPG again. They're making Devil May Cry games under the Final Fantasy brand now.
Blame Nomura for chasing the action gameplay ever since Advent Children came out. People seemed to be fine with it in the lead up to FFXV.
I’m with you there
Thank god people bring this up.

I know Yoshi-P said he wanted to drop the Roman numerals of each mainline. But personally I’m kinda mixed on that thought. Once we get to Final Fantasy XX (which is a LONG TIME away), then I can understand dropping the numbers
Until we get to Final Fantasy 30 and someone types the Roman numeral in the search bar. 😂😂😂
They're going to have to, or they will need to skip Final Fantasy XXX for ethical and marketing reasons
Do you know how long fans have been waiting for Final Fantasy XXX?
it would be nice if they dropped it at 20, ending on even number. after that they could drop the numbers
I am just hoping they knock it out of the park and with it, and give us all a positive game experience that will stay with us for a long time.🙌🏽😁
My greatest wish would be to have every single CS designate the the best people to come together and work a common game someday as well.❤ Thanks for sharing you insights on the subject NSP!🙌🏽🤩💕
Limitations is what breeds creativity, and in order to discover those limitations you actually need to sit down and work on the project.

no.
be careful, the nomura haters might come out of the woodwork and ask why he didnt off himself already. either hand him FFXVII or give him like a FFXV-2 or FFXV alternate timeline retelling or something.
Nomura the real mvp, ff viii, gilgamesh, tomberi, cactuar
I’d also love to see a swan song with hironobu sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu involved. One last, final, fantasy game that they could call Final Fantasy
Agreed. V and VI managed to achieve this too to a certain degree, IX for certain nailed it.
16 and Rebirth have all of these things. A happy ending is not required.
Also don't forget about party members. The best parts of the FF games was having a bunch of friends to go on the adventure with. Not make it a solo game with some AI helping you (FF16).
Also party members, elemental weaknesses, potions, -ra & -ga spells, and a little bit of silly goofy-ness.
And explorable map and airships.

In an interview to Yoshi P about the new FF expansion they came to the question of the allusion to IX in the game was deliberate for a soon to happen IX remake, in which he clearly denied this. If a remake was indeed to be happening soon, hos response should have been different like 'please look forward to it'.
So I'd really like to follow changes like that, let's see what comes out of it
I wish they bring back turn based or hybrid action and turn and playable party members

@@funicon3689 It's not even just that, it's all shallow shlock since X, and it's just getting progressively worse.
The key to a Final Fantasy that's GOOD is that:
They're all a bunch of subplots from characters who come from different sub-genres meeting at a convergence point leading to the greater narrative.

Please Square Enix, focus on completing VII: Remake Part 3 BEFORE the development of XVII.
You're suggesting they just be inspired by whatever is popular at the time instead of being actually creative.
If Yoko Taro isn’t going to make another Nier or Drakengard game anytime soon I think he’d be a great candidate for directing FFXVII
I disagree. He's too edgy and he dislikes conventional tropes too much. FF needs to go back to its roots, not put some empowered autist in charge of it so it can become even more different.
@@Rivershield you say that like ff wasnt always like that
@@treebush It wasn't like Yoko Taro games. He seems to like to deconstruct the genre
NSP: let me discuss future XVII, but with Metaphor music background
I want the next FF game is scifi action based military shooter open world.
I was just thinking about him too. May be a risky move but i would love some Yoko Taro crazyness in a final fantasy title

Not that thumbnail..... I missed FFBE now....
I hope for a Asian or modern Setting. Or a completly new Setting like "Art Deco". I would love a Horror RPG Setting like Shadow Hearts did. .
As long as it's not Yoshi P again I am fine with it. His final fantasy was too westernized

About new younger team handling next mainline:
Atlus has done that with Shin Megami Tensei V, it was made mostly by newcomers, while veterans handled Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Looking forward to the next stream NSP!

No thanks. FF is still FF and should remain action or mixed like Rebirth.
@@morriganrenfield8240experimental storytelling has never been a thing that makes final fantasy
My money is on FF17 going full Clair Obscur, which I think is a good thing
Why are people talking about that game? It doesn't have any waifus like in the thumbnail of this video.
Put Creative Unit 3 in charge of story/setting/characters/etc from now on. FF16 had one of the best stories ever from a FF game despite its linear/limited gameplay.
What game did you play? Sixteen is awful as far as originality goes
Wrong lol@@geoffreychauvin1474
@@geoffreychauvin1474I never claimed it was the most original, but it’s still one of the most cohesive/well-told/well-acted/well-written/etc FF stories, so I still think it’s one of the best. Original doesn’t necessarily = good if it’s not written/told well.
I'm giving you my like, but CBU3 did a terrible job at world building, and fhw story, I'm sorry to say it, it's predictable and boring.
So you can see dudes in black saying "Darkness." and Sora saying "No! Friendship! Hearts!" the stories are utterly obnoxious and repetitive in these games, no one seems like an actual person except the disney characters.

I would fire CB3 if I were square enix
I wouldn't go that drastic but I would keep them sequestered to MMOs where they shine. Not to single player games
LOL, FF14 was the only game making a profit in the last few years. Firing them would be the equivalent of Squenix committing seppuku.
@@philippedaigneault366 LOL, so you think that if something makes money that means it’s good.
@@Penguinz13989 Of course, do you want your company to survive or not? Do you want to keep making things? What a curious question? Truth is as soon as you get put in the stock market your company dies as soon as it stops making less money than last quarter. What's the song playing in the beginning?
One day i will fucking play ff13 versus, someday...
this is where a creative unit or 2 that could serve AA level 3yrs dev game should be implemented.
this channel has already provided much of the options that squareenix could implement. having the 3 and a half long discussion and the atlus topic in the forefront.
but at the head of this, they really should place the "new sakaguchi" first before even planning out anything.
No more Yoshi P. 16 is underwhelming as fuck, having the most underwhelming battle system of any FF.
What's wrong? Don't like Devil May Cry games?
Oh mah gawd I hope they don't mess up with who they are choosing for this... They should choose me because unironically I got good ideas & a world already built they could use as the setting & even the concepts: which are concepts that Nomura been wanting to use for a long time (since FF15) but didn't figure out how.
Holy Trinity for FF XVII:
Director: Naoki Hamaguchi (FF7 Rebirth)
Producer: Yoshi-P (FF 14 y 16)
Writer: Natsuko Ishikawa (FF 14 Shadowbringers)
Personally I don't want anyone from the MMOs anywhere near the next entry.

Man, you are just all up inside your own ass today, huh?
I mean, excluding the MMOs. We had XIII for an entire console generation. XV and 7remake came out on the PS4 generation. At this rate. We will possibly get one more during the PS5 generation. Which is likely to be FF7R3. Just to keep that from being on three different console generations.
Ff16 was alright. Tho ff7 rebirth was big disappointment
Clair Obscur battle system.
"go away from the Game of Thrones ecstatic" we only had one game like that lol
@@youronewingedangel It's just that people have Game of Thrones fatigue, and a newer aesthetic with some complimentary inspirations from other fantasy franchises would be good for the next Final Fantasy game.
People desperately wanted a pure medieval FF again for years and they got it. Of course it didn't have a turn based system so apparently it was all in vain😂
@@johnmcternan4157 I'm just saying if for certain games like the next Final Fantasy game it should try going back to turn-based, but add some new features to make it more fun for old and new fans.
