Sing High! Sing Low! More Girl Scout Songs (vintage vinyl, 1956)

After "Sing Together: Songs Girl Scouts Sing" (vintage vinyl from 1953), the Girl Scouts issued a follow up album of songs which were sung at larger group gatherings or at summer camp. Like its predecessor, this is also a 78 rpm record, and it was released in 1956. The songs vary from fun and action to nonsense words, from songs with parts or counterpoints to Americana folk music - much like you would have heard at a camporee or a regional event of the time. Most of these songs were printed in the "Girl Scout Pocket Songbook".
This recording is not as polished as "Sing Together" but with good reason. Choir director Rhys Morgan used his own experienced young singers for "Sing Together." Cut offs are clean, with notes and enunciation both clear as a result of vocal training. For "Sing High! Sing Low!" Director Morgan enlisted girls from a Senior Girl Scout troop. It gives the feel of a singalong, being in a camp dining hall or singing while hiking trails - and it works.
As a Girl Scout growing up in the 1970s, I sang a number of these. Not all of them are familiar, but I noticed that some songs paralleled versions I knew: "Song Without Words" - "An Austrian Went Yodeling"; "Goin' to Leave Ol' Texas" - "The Cowboy's Lament"; "Bell Song" - the German "Du Mein Alles" (which also had a descant), printed in Dutch in the Pocket Songbook. I've always found the evolution and variations of songs fascinating!
Scout songs and Scout camp songs have always had a special place in my heart. I hope you enjoy the songs and the montage of vintage photos as much as I enjoyed putting this together!
