  • What does Putin want? Does he want to recreate Russia’s borders from thirty years ago?”
    “Yes.”
Tim Marshall, author of Prisoners of Geography, reacts to Donald Tusk’s claim that “we are in a pre-war era” - but we are closer to 1936 than 1939, he says. “If Ukraine falls, it’s a matter of time before we fight.”

Tim’s point about Western European intellectuals and politicians mistaking the events of 1989 and the 1990’s for what they were - a holiday from history - is spot on. Eastern Europeans understandably see things differently.

It's interesting to compare people who support Ukraine and those who don't. In the first case they are usually recognised scholars, analysts, experts, who have been studying international relations for years, just like Mr.Marshall. Under the second category usually fall the persons who hadn't even known where Ukraine is on the map before the war started, but they think that they understand better than anyone the situation in Ukraine and the best course of action for their country. The first example that comes to mind of such a person is M.T.Green. I think for any person with at least some amount of critical thinking it must be obvious, that Ukraine's ability to defend itself is within the utmost national interests of the West

Ukraine is running dangerously low on air defence Patriot rockets. Kharkiv is particularly vulnerable to a massive attack from the air. It makes economic sense to reduce the damage the Kremlin can inflict on Ukraine, rather than wait for the damage and pay for the restoration. Also, if Kharkiv comes under fire, the cost of the ensuing migration crisis will be astronomic. We should invest in Ukraine's defence, now.

    1. One member of the Duma submitting a draft bill to parliament does not make it the view or the policy of the government.
    2. Look at the impact of the end of the Soviet Union on Russian society in the 1990s, then you'll understand why Putin described it as a catastrophe. If you want to know what Putin thinks of the Soviet Union, consider his famous quote that: ‘anyone who doesn’t regret the passing of the Soviet Union has no heart. Anyone who wants it restored has no brains.’
    3. Tim's argument seems to be that war between Russia and a NATO country is only likely if NATO ceases to exist, which as he concedes is not going to happen. By his own logic, whether Ukraine 'wins' this war or not has no bearing on the likelihood of Russia invading a NATO country.
It's in Ukraine best interests to negotiate a settlment to end this conflict as soon as possible. Ukraine is never going to win this war, even if it got all the support it asked for. Delaying reaching a settlment is only going to cost Ukraine more land and more lives.

NATO without the US would be extremely weak, and Putin would almost certainly test their commitment to Article 5 by invading the Baltic States on a pretext, in the expectation that Article 5 is just a bluff, and that in practice the Western NATO countries would make any excuse to get out of fulfilling their obligations.

When Putin says that he has no plans to invade a Nato country, then one needs to understand that he means that literally. He does not see the three Baltic states as countries so invading anyone of them would not break his promise. Did I understand Tim Marshall correctly, he drew a parallel between Germany's involvement in the Spanish Civil War and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I see no parallel at all; the Russian invasion of Ukraine was prompted by the treatment by Ukraine of the Russian-speaking people in the Donbas and by NATO's unwillingness to stop expanding towards Russia, which was a serious security concern for the latter to put it mildly. Where is the parallel Mr Marshall is speaking of. Having experienced first hand Russo-phobia by a Pole to what extent is Donald Tusk fuelled by the same feelings? Correct me if I'm wrong but, unlike the West, Russian military engagements have tended to be much closer to home. The West, America in particular, wants its sphere of influence to be worldwide, a comparable aim has not been demonstrated by modern Russia to the best of my knowledge. As is the norm the causes of the Ukraine-Russian war was not mentioned in this interview for the simple reason that, based on the historical context, the West are entirely to blame for the conflict. Was Russian seen as a serious / existential military threat by the West before the events in Ukraine took place, I don't think so. According to Tim Marshal NATO is far stronger than Russia. The West has miscalculated, got itself into a position it never dreamed off, and now has to talk up war because it's messed-up big time. It chose to ignore another countries genuine security concerns and is paying the price.
