Still amazes me that in places like Germany and Netherlands storks are considered pests (mostly because of their abundance) and yet here in Denmark they are so rare that whenever a new breeding pair comes here its worthy of the mainstream media (not to mention that recently we got a black stork here having ornithologists up in arms in joy).
We used to be very, very happy when a new breeding pair nested. Yet, nowadays they’re quite common - I once encountered a stork whilst at a highway fuel station, it was parading in between the customers and their cars😂. And, as you may have read, we still want them, just not that close to railways…

For Storks to flourish not only must the catenary system be providing nesting sites the Storks see as safe, but there must be a good source of food with easy flying distance, maybe ProRail need to do a habitat survey, and/or radio collar the colonies to see where they are feeding. Part of the problem may be the drainage canals and meers that tend to pocket along side the railway routes. Clearly ProRail cannot interfere with these habitats. The answer maybe to develop a retro version of the "Heritage" catenary poles you showed us between Utrecht and Hilversum, made such that the Storks could not find an anker point to start building their nests; and then offering them easy safe platforms to use further away from the tracks. Farmers are always looking for alternative sources of money, so maybe a little crafty thinking by ProRail draw them into unwittingly help resolve the situation?
Thank you for this nice cab ride on a rather sunny day. Regarding storks nests on catenary portals, this problem also exists in France. Seen on the track between DAX and BAYONNE. In SPAIN and between LERIDA and ZARAGOZA on the HSL and shortly before entering a tunnel that allows access to Zaragoza Delicias station, metal poles have been installed about 3 m from the HSL That allow storks to make their nests. In 2018 knew. It still exists it's a solution.
Tough situation with the storks - similar to the badger issue. Spent New Year's near Meppel. So good to see the station when it wasn't raining! Great video as always!
As most responsible, mature, adult-thinking viewers of Cabview Holland Dutch Railways will already know, storks are merely the delivery system for babies. So, I must therefore recluse myself from comment, other than to wish everyone to have a 'Great Saturday'! Gracias por tu video, Señor Cabview. RT sends, Puebla, México...
Hi Vincent. Sik? Nope, no Sik. I "wound back" the video to look again, but no NS 200. Did you mean on the left? The information to look out for the Sik appeared at 52:28, "Did you spot it?" appeared at 52:40 but no NS Class 200!
If you pause at 52:38 you can see the Sik on the far right of the screen, peeping between the trees. It IS hard to spot. It is between the white-walled house and the line of trees.
Dierenrijk zoo in Mierlo is right next to the track between Eindhoven and Helmond. Not only did I see stork nests on the electricity poles there, but also on just about every pole within the zoo they could find as well.
Wow this is the first time I've been in one these videos! you can see me as one of the shadows on the left at 28:26 waiting for the train to Zwolle that had a 25min delay.
It's great to see the storks making a strong recovery. I agree with the commet about doing a habitat survey, it would provide good data regardng feedng habits and locations. I did also think that re-locating, where practical, the food source so that the storks would nest further away from the OLE could be an option.
There are auto air compressors that let off a loud boom very 45 seconds .They are used on Icelandic long line fishing boats to keep gulls off the baited outgoing line . But maybe not pratical in this case .
@@CabviewHolland Sorry. I tried as best as I could to decipher the page into English, but found no means of contact where I could submit a message via email. Greetings from Canada!
Perhaps I see a case of quest for best being an enemy of "good enough" or even "better than it was." Post a couple meters outside the catenaries is certainly not ideal; but, is it better than what you have now? I'd handle the catenaries with round tipped steeply sloped conical fixtures over the posts and tent shaped shrouds over the horizontal portions of the catenaries, which the storks seem to avoid, anyway. Making trials with several such fixturing schemes in several regions may at least reduce the dinosaur descendent vs train contact rate. I'd also try various cheap shrouds near areas with nests to see if that keeps the nesting areas from expanding. What has ProRail done to explore incremental improvements over the current configuration with stork condominiums several nests high? Almost anything should be better than doing nothing. {^_^}
Addendum - I'd also experiment with moving the nest to the other side of the upright. That would mean extending the cross member to the outside and perhaps making it flatter while making the part between uprights rounder and slipperier. Even that little distance should provide some benefit. While the upright between nest and track should provide a little additional benefit with the small shielding effect it would have. {^_^}

Easily solved by building higher nesting poles near the train tracks
Te Blijdorp Rotterdam is het wel mooi
Did I spot it? Only just! It wasn't hidden, just well obscured.
Gosh, you were keen to get to work. In the cab before your colleague exited at his end.

At least it wasn't the one from 'Alice in Wonderland' - no top hat! I wonder why it didn't use the crossing?
I have a possible solution to your stork problem. Who do I contact?
