Directors cut of Aliens is a must, because the auto-gun scene shows how they get into the part of the compound they sealed off. The blood opens a hole in the ceiling.
Love Nick's knowledge and research into the movie, especially shoutouts to Giger, and Jodorowsky. Alien is my favorite movie of all time! Y'all should do Jodorowsky In Review LMAO. The Holy Mountain will blow your minds.
The ending scene where the alien is revealed to be in the escape pod sleeping in the wall is one of my favorites! Not only is it an awesome opportunity for a jump scare when you see it moving behind her, but it also provides more context to the alien's behavior. That scene to me demonstrates that the alien is an animal, whose actions are dictated by instinct. All the animal knows is to live through its life cycle. It's not an evil villain but just a monstrous organism engineered to breed, kill, and survive. It's like a bug that's just sitting on a wall not moving.
I just revisited all these films last month for the first time. So this is fun to see! Great timing for my personal experience as they are all fresh in my mind.
Guys I'm so excited for this! When I met Nick in London back in 2018? This was the first thing i asked about! We are finally here! But please for the love of god, DO NOT WATCH the theatrical cut of Alien 3! Watch the assembly cut. It is far far superior. Please Nick, give me this one thing. I have waited like 7 years after all. Thanks!
Special Editions and Director’s Cuts are a must!!! Any true fan will recommend them over Theatrical. This goes through all the films in the series into Prometheus and Covenant.
Everyone please do what you can to confirm them not to skip the Assembly Cut. Ain't no way we waited this many years for them to skip one of the most underrated films in the franchise, the theatrical cut can't be the one watched
@@Mrs.Garrison69no, James Cameron does not agree with that at all. It's literally called the "directors cut". Alien 3 absolutely should be the "Special/Extended" edition. Fincher fixed some shit. Any of my Alien fan friends ALL told me... you can watch the theatrical, but if you're only planning on watching it once, do the updated version.
It was my understanding that Fincher had nothing to do with the alternate cuts of Alien 3, they were just based off his notes, or something to that effect.
@@james.b.mcgill That's probably fair... I assume he was pretty pissed at all the initial interference from the studio during production... from what I've been told. I do not claim to be an Alien scholar by any means lol. But yeah, the Assembly Cut, apparently the "definitive" version.
My favourite sci fi horror film of all time, and in my personal top five all time, masterpiece is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but this is one of them
I agree with Nick. I thought Veronica Cartwright played that part perfectly. She's the one with the appropriately grounded, freaked the fuck out response.
Hey boys. Been listening to the podcast for a year or two, and I've been checking out the Lord of the Rings episodes. You guys had someone on red it offering corrections and general trivia. Was very excited to see you're covering all the Alien and Predator films. Wanted to offer to do the same thing here. There's definitely things you're gonna be confused by and want context for. Right off the bat you guys were confused about the alien not moving at the end of the first movie, which you kinda got an answer for from chat and quick research I actually went to red it first but was told you’re more likely to see this here. If you do, here’s some stuff for this movie First I’d like to bring up someone who sadly still gets overlooked, *Bolaji Badejo.* He portrayed the alien via suit. He was a Nigerian design student who was 6”10. He sadly passed away in 1993 at the age of 39 from sickle cell. The cast and crew have spoken positively about him *The Alien sleeping:* I didn’t know about the O Bannon explanation, but I did the Ridley one. It’s true he had the intent of the alien having a one day life span. It was looking for a place to die. Whenever someone showed up and disturbed it, it attacked and moved to a new spot. By the end it’s close enough to dying that it’s weak and isn’t rushing to kill Ripley. Apparently they even progressively made up the costume for the Alien to look paler. *Why not attack Jonesy:* Jonesy simply posed no threat or any apparent use. Although in the Director’s Cut the alien does swat away his box. *Did the company know about the alien?:* To this day, as far as I know, we don’t have an explicit confirmation that they did or didn’t. The novelization says they did, but it has a lot of differences, so it’s not the most reliable source. At best, they knew _something_ was on that planet, and placed Ash to tell them what it was when/if they came into contact *Did Parker see the Alien kill Brett?:* No. But the scene is extended a bit in the Director’s Cut. Parker and Ripley run in right after Brett gets taken. Parker looks up and sees there’s blood dripping on him. So he realizes the alien grew big enough to carry away a full grown man
Wait until Tim finds out there's not just one but two Predator movies this year - Trachtenberg is directing both, the untitled one will be on streaming and then Badlands will be theatrical.
I remember always seeing the cover art of this movie at blockbusters and that being alone to freak me out, glad I overcame my fears to watch this masterpiece years later
Alien, T1, and Predator 1 are movie experiences that can never be replicated in their respective franchises. They work because you are watching a universe unfold that you have no idea about, there is no frame of reference to jump from. Plus most of them follow a different style compared to their sequels, a bit slower, more thriller-like. They hit different after watching all the others.
1:08:20 I appreciate Nick’s constant attempts to get the guys over their need for “shoe leather” in movies. The “science” behind the motion sensor is deeply unimportant…it’s only there so they can justify having it as suspense-generating device. The actual practicality of it or how it works is very not the point, lol. You’re doing yeoman’s work out there, Nick…I appreciate it!
“You see the alien’s in its birthday suit the entire film, so I thought it was a cop out having me wear the underwear, and not stripping entirely,” - Sigourney Weaver

Im with Greg, I was always a proponent of the sleep/hibernation theory. It was either trying to get off the ship to a new destination knowing that there were no more lifeforms left.
I think the only alt cut you need to worry about is make sure to watch the Alien 3 Assembly Cut. David Fincher was really unhappy with how Alien 3 turned out, and the Assembly Cut is the closest to his original vision for the film, and makes some of the themes of the movie more prominent.
I think the Aliens extended cut makes it worse! Seeing a preview of what happens to the facility takes a lot of the mystery/suspense/surprise opposed to getting there for the first time not knowing anything.
You have to watch the directors cut of "Aliens" it shows scenes of the outside of the colony as well as fills in plot holes in the story. James Cameron said this is the real version of the movie and a lot of fans agree.
Very excited for this series. I love the Alien franchise. I’ve seen all the Alien films except Romulus. However, I’ve only seen Predator and Prey on the Predator side, and I haven’t seen either of the AVP films.

Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for the way she portrayed Ripley in Aliens, I believe she would have won if the directors cut had been available
Nick is so wrong about the Aliens Special Edition. It is definitely the superior version of the film. I hope they change their mind on that one. They really should watch the SE. All the other films, the theatrical version is a fine choice.

Only 27 mins in and I find it odd that Tim keeps saying none of the characters are scared and yet hates Veronica Cartwright cos her character is basically losing it in panic the whole time after the chest-burster scene
Definitely worth watching Alien 3's Assembly Cut/Special Edition/whatever name you find it under. It is a VAST improvement over the troubled Theatrical Cut and is closer to the version of the film that David Fincher wanted to make (and notably includes an extensive deleted sequence that helps make a lot of subplots make more sense). Aliens: Special Edition is very cool, but while it adds some scenes that are small-yet-awesome (auto-guns), and other scenes that are interesting (but whose inclusion may disrupt the narrative in some viewers' eyes, as Nick alludes to), it's not as mandatory as Alien 3's since Aliens' Theatrical Cut is still a classic. Though I still prefer the Aliens SE myself.
In regards to the Alien movies, Alien 3 should be the Assembly Cut. Everything else should be the Theatrical Cut (you can make a case for the Special Edition version of Aliens, because it shows two cool scenes, but it's really not needed, and you can watch those scenes afterwards on UA-cam)

Alien Resurrection I wouldn't have a problem with either, but there are important things in the other two that I really do think should be discussed at least (Alien Isolation is based off a deleted scene from Aliens even)
The xenomorph is sleeping at the end because it behaves like a big cat. Thats the point of Jonesy and the moment they have. To the Alien it's just cohabitating with these things that it can hunt and eat when it needs to and then go sit in a tree and ignore and swing it's tail and just watch. It doesn't know it's in a war with Ripley.
You can pick the theatrical cut of Aliens if you want to (the extended cut is better imo though), but the extended cut of Alien 3 is necessary. It's way better than the theatrical cut.

Missing the initial 'daughter' scene in the Aliens theatrical, and the awesome auto gun scene, is criminal man
Broooo, everytime I watch Aliens i think this. Especially the sentry turret scene, watching the ammo count dwindle makes it a really exciting scene
I think the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 is pretty much unanimously considered the best version of that movie FWIW! You should consider watching that one.
