The Globes have the category that Carrey was nominated in. "Best Performance in A Comedy or Musical". The Oscars don't. And his performance wasn't recognized by the Oscar committee for a nomination. The Globes don't always carry over to the Oscars.

It's definitely true that the market for comedians blew wide open in the 80's, but most of them failed to really break out in the same way.

Unpopular opinion but as funny as Eddie is and as big of a legend as he is, Jamie Foxx may be a comedian too not just a better actor. If you REALLY look at Jamie’s versatility through Stand up, scripted sitcoms, sketch shows, hosting comedy events, and movies, he pretty much hasn’t shown a weakness.
Eddie and Jamie are both phenomenal actors, Eddie has more hit movies in my opinion. Both are incredible regardless ❤

The reason Eddie didn't pick up and oscar for Dreamgirls, is because of Norbit. I think Eddie's best is Nutty Professor. To play 6 different characters and have to make you believe that they are all different people and not him, that's acting. Marlon tried to do it, and doesnt really work....Jamie did his thing in Ray, but his musical background definitely helped him with that role.

Malcolm X showed an elements of a nonfictional person's life. I would argue that Jamie Foxx in Ray is the closest a person ever became another person on film without make-up or CGI, that's what makes his performance so special and it's all him, Eddie Murphy is second to that only because he was assisted by make-up and effects, other than that you have one imitating a living person and another one making characters appear from his mind, both are great and shouldn't be undersold but it's always going to be harder to imitate Life in Art so to me Jamie barely wins because of this but Eddie Murphy is just as capable, don't forget that in Coming to America that the trailer had to give away the fact that all the characters was Eddie Murphy and also in Nutty Professor, no other two on the planet comes close to this

You cant take anything from Eddie Murphy. He is absolutely one of the greatest comedians/actors to ever grace the stage. Lord Jamar was off on this one.
The phrase that they’re missing is “movie star.” Eddie no doubt is the biggest movie star. Most would consider tho as being an okay actor, he’s a damn good movie star. He encompasses a lot of charm, whit, charisma, screen presence, marketability. Jamie has some of that too, just not on Eddie’s level. People don’t rush to see Jamie or long for him. Eddie was that dude and kinda still is to a lot. On the all time highest grossing movie total list, Eddie is #10 at $3.8 billion. Jamie isn’t top 50. And yes, his “acting” skills are better. He won an Oscar.
