I think he was just giving Will words of advice about controlling himself and acting like a stable man at all times.

Actually it has something to do with the devil, but you're right about the self control part. In this case tho, will didn't interpret the message from Denzel correctly; will didn’t realize his wrong, so he thought the devil was Chris, but Denzel was saying the devil tempted him and he went for the bait. I think will still don't think he did wrong, I think he hasn't taken accountability for his lack of self control in the situation.
