Everything eventually must die. I think Tiesto just had to move on to another genre because Trance had reached the end of it's genre lifespan. Just like you won't hear dubstep, 2-step, hardcore or synth anymore. Tiesto saw this and decided he wanted to keep on producing, so he had to move to something more mainstream. If he didn't, he would have been a "has-been" to put it bluntly (would still be a legend of course.)
