Deficits don't mean there is no money at all. It means there is a lot owed. Some of that is owed to budgets like infrastructure. Every country has a deficit because every country is trying to allocate all their income into the budgets of projects, be they infrastructure, imports, repayments, wars, etc So, of course, argentina now has a surplus because milei just removed so much of the things the government normally spends money on. No longer balancing the tax income with expenses. That's not a sign of a healthy government. That's a sign of a government that isn't doing anything and is now sitting on the tax income

Having a Budget surplus if you are a state just means that you haven't spent all the money you received in the tax year, which would mainly be tax dollars. This means that you, the state, have basically pulled money out of the economy and are now sitting on it, which is exactly the opposite of what a state is supposed to do. How is this supposed to be good for 'the market' again? The greatest lie of austerity is that it will end.
A surplus is good to pay off debt, which means the state money that was previously injected into the economy disappears. This a way to control inflation. A State than naturally gets surpluses is in a strong position to pull off major investments. Because debt strangles public finances. However, the effects of that surplus are not to be ignored : if people lose their homes or purchasing power outright for basic necessities, is it worth it ? What boundaries shall we define ?

Adding to that, one-month budget surplus can happen even if your budget is planned for taking on debt. My country has a so called "debt hole" of like 150 billion and the planned spending is around 850 billion. And even with the budget planned for taking on additional 150 billion of debt we've had a budget surplus in June. They just shifted some payments around to show surplus because elections were coming and this was good PR.
It's also worth mentioning that companies would rather not compete -- monopolies are much more profitable. So taking away government oversight ends the free market. This was pointed out by Adam Smith in his original book about markets.

I live in argentina. All that milei cares about is reaching a budget surplus, and he has achieved that at the cost of throwing 3 millon people in poverty, and not paying for almost anything. People have bought into his plan because he said it would bring inflation down. If that doesnt happen in a few months he won't last long, but if it does I believe he can actually stay in power for a long time, because people are extremely tired about inflation and are willing to accept almost anyting in return for eliminating it.
Also, radically cutting budgets will lead to budget deficits later down the line. Less public spending means less economic activity, less economic activity means fewer jobs, so people can spend less and have less taxable income, less tax income means less money to spend on stuff and you are back at where you started. There is a reason why no real top economist advocates for radical tax and budget cuts
Less goverment spending means less taxes, which in the case of Argentina is done through inflation. Less taxation means more private investment and more efficiency. More private investment means more organic economic growth that will benefit everybody, not artificial growth created by the government that only concentrates wealth. The resources spent by the government come from the private sector, and therefore it's a zero-sum game. The sky high budget deficits happends because the Peronists trade votes for government positions. The estate is inflated by a hugh number of public employees that has no economic function.
@anamartello9703 that is an assumption that money from tax cuts either profit the entire population equally or wealth trickles down. Both rarely happen. Most tax cuts benefit the wealthy, and wealth gets stored and doesn't circulate. Every dollar spent on the wealth gives 0.32 USD to the national GDP, and every dollar spent on the average man gives over a dollar in growth. Trickle down economics has never and will never work.

If you need to pay your debt, cutting public programs is the worst way to try to make the number go up, because cutting off public money cripples private earnings, which cripples your tax base, which makes paying debt harder. Having debt isn't a huge deal. Japan still hasn't collapsed yet, and neither has the US, despite the republicans' best efforts.

If you yourself are poor, it's a problem, if your nation is poor, it's only a problem for the country making money and hiring, debtors would have to collect their debts for it to be a problem, and among those the US owes debt to are everyone with a military capable of taking the US down, which basically means attacking the US as a small investor is suicide, and attacking the US as someone like China is economic suicide, there does not exist the assets in the world to cover the existing national debts, and war on a grand scale would reduce as much existing assets as it would gain. The economic movement of money and belief it means something is the only thing that matters at international scale.

Given that poverty was affecting over 46% of the population before Millei came to office and was rising, the country was already in deep trouble. He is presumably following the electoral cycle by accepting the damage from his policies early in his term in the hope that things will improve before his first four years are up and this will win him a second four years. As much as you are probably right about Millei... there hasn't been enough time passed to judge him yet. National economies don't work on week or month scales but rather on year or decade scales. That's how long you need to implement the policy for it to actually have it's effect.
You are correct, but the problem is that while it will takes years for the impact of national economic policies takes years, the long-term damage that his policies will cause will take decades to recover from. That's why these policies have to be fought before they can be implemented, because if they are implemented then the damage will be felt by entire generations of future Argentinians. Granted, Argentina's economy was fucked to start with, so whether or not this new kind of fucked-up-ness is worse or not could be a matter for debate.

You are probably right about Criminal X, right? We'll just send him to prison without a trial, right? Millei has made drastic cuts to social programs and subsidies arguing that there isn't enough money and that it is wasteful spending. So obivously poverty will increase as people who were receiving the help have their income reduced. That's not actually the sign of a failed policy, that's an obivous consequence of giving people less money. Then entire Millei argument is that Argentina's policies of protectionism and subsides have harmed the economy. If he's right then it's going to take more than a year or maybe even five to see good results. That's the point, he's probably wrong, but to prove him wrong will take some years.

It has traditionally had really strange policies on trade, subsidies and redistribution. The country itself has remained a basket case in constant chaos. The main thing to realise about Argentinia is how dumb that whole "socialism ruined their economy" argument is. Argentinian economic decline was primarily about their failure to deal with the effective end of UK investment after the start of WW2 and various other trade-related decisions in an EXTREMELY trade reliant economy, which at various times ruined both their imports and exports. Government debt and "socialism" were minor players in this.

A budget surplus just means Argentina isn't spending their taxpayer dollars on anything. Like the things people need.

Every country has a steady rate of tax income and government spending. Deficits don't mean there is no money at all. It means there is a lot owed. Some of that is owed to budgets like infrastructure. Every country has a deficit because every country is trying to allocate all their income into the budgets of projects, be they infrastructure, imports, repayments, wars, etc
So, of course, argentina now has a surplus because milei just removed so much of the things the government normally spends money on. No longer balancing the tax income with expenses. That's not a sign of a healthy government. That's a sign of a government that isn't doing anything and is now sitting on the tax income

Having a Budget surplus if you are a state just means that you haven't spent all the money you received in the tax year, which would mainly be tax dollars. This means that you, the state, have basically pulled money out of the economy and are now sitting on it, which is exactly the opposite of what a state is supposed to do. How is this supposed to be good for 'the market' again?
The greatest lie of austerity is that it will end.
A surplus is good to pay off debt, which means the state money that was previously injected into the economy disappears. This a way to control inflation. A State than naturally gets surpluses is in a strong position to pull off major investments. Because debt strangles public finances.
However, the effects of that surplus are not to be ignored : if people lose their homes or purchasing power outright for basic necessities, is it worth it ? What boundaries shall we define ?

Adding to that, one-month budget surplus can happen even if your budget is planned for taking on debt. My country has a so called "debt hole" of like 150 billion and the planned spending is around 850 billion. And even with the budget planned for taking on additional 150 billion of debt we've had a budget surplus in June. They just shifted some payments around to show surplus because elections were coming and this was good PR.
It's also worth mentioning that companies would rather not compete -- monopolies are much more profitable. So taking away government oversight ends the free market.

Also, radically cutting budgets will lead to budget deficits later down the line. Less public spending means less economic activity, less economic activity means fewer jobs, so people can spend less and have less taxable income, less tax income means less money to spend on stuff and you are back at where you started. There is a reason why no real top economist advocates for radical tax and budget cuts
Less goverment spending means less taxes, which in the case of Argentina is done through inflation. Less taxation means more private investment and more efficiency. More private investment means more organic economic growth that will benefit everybody, not artificial growth created by the government that only concentrates wealth.
The resources spent by the government come from the private sector, and therefore it's a zero-sum game.
The sky high budget deficits happends because the Peronists trade votes for government positions. The estate is inflated by a hugh number of public employees that has no economic function.

Most tax cuts benefit the wealthy, and wealth gets stored and doesn't circulate. Every dollar spent on the wealth gives 0.32 USD to the national GDP, and every dollar spent on the average man gives over a dollar in growth.

If you need to pay your debt, cutting public programs is the worst way to try to make the number go up, because cutting off public money cripples private earnings, which cripples your tax base, which makes paying debt harder.
Having debt isn't a huge deal. Japan still hasn't collapsed yet, and neither has the US, despite the republicans' best efforts.

He is presumably following the electoral cycle by accepting the damage from his policies early in his term in the hope that things will improve before his first four years are up and this will win him a second four years. The point of libertarianism isnt to create equality and freedom. The point of libertarianism is to create a weak society that can be easily coopted by the rich and morally deficient.
As much as you are probably right about Millei... there hasn't been enough time passed to judge him yet. National economies don't work on week or month scales but rather on year or decade scales. That's how long you need to implement the policy for it to actually have it's effect.
You are correct, but the problem is that while it will takes years for the impact of national economic policies takes years, the long-term damage that his policies will cause will take decades to recover from. That's why these policies have to be fought before they can be implemented, because if they are implemented then the damage will be felt by entire generations of future Argentinians.
Granted, Argentina's economy was fucked to start with, so whether or not this new kind of fucked-up-ness is worse or not could be a matter for debate.

Millei has made drastic cuts to social programs and subsidies arguing that there isn't enough money and that it is wasteful spending. So obivously poverty will increase as people who were receiving the help have their income reduced. That's not actually the sign of a failed policy, that's an obivous consequence of giving people less money.
Then entire Millei argument is that Argentina's policies of protectionism and subsides have harmed the economy. If he's right then it's going to take more than a year or maybe even five to see good results. That's the point, he's probably wrong, but to prove him wrong will take some years.
@@Muninnnr Absolutely. One economist once argued that there are only 4 kinds of economies. Developed, Developing, Japan and Argentina. Argentina is wierd. It has traditionally had really strange policies on trade, subsidies and redistribution. The country itself has remained a basket case in constant chaos. It went from being one of the top 5 wealthiest countries in the world in 1913 to be number 66 today. This is a massive failure of economic policy over decades. Argentina went from being developed to being developing. That's not normal.
The main thing to realise about Argentinia is how dumb that whole "socialism ruined their economy" argument is.
Argentinian economic decline was primarily about their failure to deal with the effective end of UK investment after the start of WW2 and various other trade-related decisions in an EXTREMELY trade reliant economy, which at various times ruined both their imports and exports.
Government debt and "socialism" were minor players in this.
More important that Argentina was never socialist. How could socialism ruin a country it was never empowered in?

Very funny the commentaries, people seems to be unaware that Argentina was already broken from years of the left in the power, super inflation, a pretty significant part of the population lived out of public money with no insentive to work, plus a alot of people were public workers that just inflate the State. Independent of who would govern the situation was and still is very bad. The inflation seems like is slowing down, I'm expecting that Argentina will do a big come back in some years, by that time I'll come back here to see what every economist in here are saying about it
