I wish they would’ve based Sonic’s kit more on Sonic Battle, but apparently it’s based on Virtua Fighter moves. Probably part of the reason he’s not as fun as he could be.
I agree people would like this moveset more. I think people would like playing against him even less, this version is just as speedy and elusive and now has like twenty more ways to kill you from half stage in an instant.
The problem with Sonic is, his pure speed encourages camping. He needs it for feeling like him, but it allows for him to get a kill and time out. You can give him the easiest, sickest combos in the world, but why go for them when they can't hit you and camping is free?
On the topic of how side-B ignores shields - that’s actually a reference from the home series. For those not that into Sonic, there was a series of games usually called the “boost era” or “boost formula.” Games like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Forces have a Boost Meter that can be charged up and expended for a burst of speed. One of the main traits of the boost was that it allowed Sonic to plow through enemies, ignoring most defenses. I do have to admit that the Boost move in this mod is a bit strong. Maybe tie the special to a meter, and the move loses distance, power, and the shield-ignoring property if the meter isn’t full enough.

I’ve mained the guy since Brawl and have *literally* been waiting for his side-b to become the Light Speed Dash since I learned why it wasn’t already -time constraints adding him to the game- so I’m so happy seeing this! 🤩 Why didn’t this mod return the “you’re too slow!” taunt though? Sonic is one of my favorite game series and characters ever, and to see his representation in Smash suck so thoroughly, not just in moveset but in music, stages, etc, makes me so sad.
i want to get into sonic, but i haven't really enjoyed any of the games i've tried. he's a really cool character though and i hate how they did him in smash.

Some moves translate better than others but wow I like that down smash (combo finisher from Sonic Battle). The ending handstand is so well done. I don’t think the back throw buff (that angle is DISGUSTING) or the unshieldable side b were necessary.

My idea for improving Sonic is reward him for getting a bunch of consecutive hits, and nerf him if he hasn’t landed one in a while. Like, Lucario without aura levels of nerfed lol. This, on top of any moveset changes, would encourage Sonic players to still be actually going in and fighting instead of running away, and encourage learning good combo strings, without having to nerf his speed or his moves themselves. It would thus kinda play into a “momentum” idea and could even use a meter to show how well you were doing
I honestly think making a boost gauge for sonic would help balance this mod a lot. Another video talked about how to improve sonic and they talked about a boost gauge. I think attacking and making a chain combo would fill the gauge up a certain amount. Many attacks that use his speed, like for instance in this mod, his side B. A bit of the gauge would be used. That way it requires players to get up close and personal in order to stay alive. I think that this gauge would deplete his side B, his sprint, and maybe his ultimate could have a damage boost for how much gauge you have. Though having a full gauge and using his ultimate would slow him considerably for around 5 seconds. Maybe he would move as fast as a heavy character like ganon or bowser while sprinting. These are ideas from someone who knows nothing about balancing. so give me some ideas
Another cool detail you didn’t mention. After a successful Homing-Attack, Sonic strikes a quick cool pose like he does in most of his Boost-Era games. Also Nick, actually that pose is from Sonic Adventure 1 not SA2 🤓
This is a really sick mod. There are some changes that I really hope get added to the next Smash game, like the Down Smash, F-Air, and Up B. But there are some weird things about this mod as well. His Jab is just fine, kind of surprised his Dash Attack isn't his Slide from any Modern Sonic game, his Up Smash just feels weird, and his other new aerials are cool, but not what I expected. I was kind of hoping to see the original Up Air and B-Air, and the N-Air and D-Air do feel like they could be other moves. Really not a big fan of the D-Air, as it's just Palutena's. Kind of wish they were the Insta-Sheild from Sonic 3 and the Stomp ability that's also in a lot of Sonic games. The Side B is also a little janky, but I think it works perfectly fine. Maybe don't make it ignore sheild and intangible, but otherwise, it's fine. And the taunts at the end of the Homing Attack are really nice additions. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty solid mod. A little bit of touching up on the animations could be used, but it's really clean in it's present state.

Essentially: - Pre: A light dash - Half: A farther dash - Full: Burst Attack Another move I'd change is Homing Attack. Make it a grapple move that allows Sonic to kick opponents in any direction. While it charges, players can press A instead to use a basic attack. I'd also love to see the Bounce added into the moveset by pressing A while charging Down B (Spindash). Anyways, this comment is meant for the devs/modders.

I had a concept before for an overhaul to Link's moveset to better represent Breath of the Wild, though, now that Tears of the Kingdom is out, any rework would likely draw from that instead.

A few change I would make: - Boost can only be performed *once* mid-air and has a cooldown as to avoid spamming it Additionally, make it so it takes a lot of shield durability instead of ignoring it altogether. - fix up trow animation, its weird as hell. - change a few effects (boost for example) - revert up special. Giving it a hitbox is too much.
This version of Sonic would probably be the best character in the game. Not only can he camp you (even better now that his b throw kills easier and side b ignores shields and you can spam it) he also can play more aggressive and not suffer for it.
Sonic is a character that I felt needed a rework because he don't really represent or feel like Sonic that well. I mean if I'm not mistaken they have nothing that represents modern Sonic games in his actual moveset, and two moves that are just spindash because he was rushed in brawl, however they never change that for some reason. And on the feel side Sonic should be a character that would be constantly in-your-face, being able to dish out cool combos while using his excellent agility to his advantage to close the gap and start applying pressure. In fighting game terms he should be a rush down character.
Glad you're back from holiday. I wholeheartedly agree that Sonic needs a new moveset, but seeing this satisfies me, especially seeing that f-air from Sonic Battle among others. If only this was in the actual game.
Such a shame when devs rely on passionate fans to do a better job. In this case, why didn't Nintendo take inspiration for Sonic's moves from past games? This moveset is much better than I thought it would be.
@@SonicntZane yeah, the whole point of smash bros is to advertise the different franchises in Nintendo’s arsenal, while Sonic isn’t a Nintendo IP, he still has games on the switch, people still buy smash bros for Sonic, Nintendo still makes money because of him, so I doubt they would have a problem with fully representing Sonic, it’s just because Sakurai hates creating new movesets for characters because he’s afraid that the new moveset would alienate players, and he made Sonic’s moveset in 2008, with the only games he took for reference being the classic games, Sonic 06, and Sonic the fighters
This is the best sonic moveset I've seen implemented in a mod so far, the only moves that I don't like are neutral air, down air and up throw but other than that, it's almost perfect. Of course it's extremely broken but with proper balancing this could be the perfect rework that sonic needs

Despite Sonic being much more fun to play around with and given that extra dev time he deserved from being a rushed brawl inclusion, I do agree the boost is broken, you should only be able to do it once in the air but if Sonic is edge guarded he can keep trying to come back, I know everyone may not like this but I propose a boost meter so it’s not mindless braindead spamming and the boost always had a meter in Sonic Games. Aside from that love that bouncing off the spring for up b now has a hit box with a new animation of him spinning around, the Battle moves fit him like a glove, the new idle animation is cool and man that SA1 Taunt really feels like it could’ve been in the vanilla game.
A more balanced version of this Sonic would be TOTALLY awesome to have in the official vanilla version of the game, and I would totally unironically main Sonic if he was like this. Sakurai, TAKE NOTES!!!!

The modder definitely went a liiittle too hard on the damage, but they also went CRAZY on the animations, I loved this. Good lookin' fuckin' shit, hats off.
Thats not gonna happen and besides they didn't even mind to change Ganon's moveset to become good character. They didn't even let Mario use Cappy as a attack and Megaman use his double gear system from MM11
Another solution would be to give Sonic his Frontiers moveset. Change Homing Attack to Homing Shot (It would do slightly less damage but to make up for it, it has a reduced start up and there are ten homing attacks. If you saw the actual move you would get it). Make side b Quick Cyloop (Sonic charges forward while activating the Cyloop ability. If he uses the Cyloop on someone they are damaged and propelled straight up. It can also break shields easily). Make up b Looping Kick and make it like Meta Knights. And make down b Grand Slam and have it be a counter move (Even from projectiles) And also give him a Phantom Rush mechanic. (This would be a meter that builds up the more Sonic deals damage. Once it fills Phantom Rush activates. Sonic will do more damage but only if he keeps the Phantom Rush bar up.)

If you look closely, you can see that in the last match, Jordan is wearing the edgy coloured shirt to match his edgy Sonic and Nick is wearing his classic blue Sonic colour. It was meant to be.

Sonic as he normally is is necessary for the game’s balancing. You may not like him, but that probably means you main a character that requires constant use of the B button. That’s your counter. Pick a different character and I’ll switch it up too
I hate it when mods change things just for the sake of changing things. Yea, a lot of Sonic's ball moves need to be changed, but what's wrong with Sonic's back air or up air or forward air or down air?
This wouldn't stop Sonic from camping, actually this new moveset might make it even easier to camp because you can now go under the stage for free.

Prolly cause they didn't change his voice. The VA in brawl and smash 4 are different.
There’s mods for that. This mod supports mods like type g, modern sonic with Ryan’s voice, and heroes sonic with classic Dreamcast voice

It was actually his launcher in Sonic Battle. Which makes a lot of sense for a dsmash.

I think it would be better if Sonic's side b would let him be in full acceleration at the end. Like keeping your grounded momentum for a full run

The one bad thing I really struggle with Sonic is his range, but this new Sonic seems to have a pretty good one.

Glad you're back from holiday. I wholeheartedly agree that Sonic needs a new moveset, but seeing this satisfies me, especially seeing that f-air from Sonic Battle among others. If only this was in the actual game.

Such a shame when devs rely on passionate fans to do a better job. In this case, why didn't Nintendo take inspiration for Sonic's moves from past games? This moveset is much better than I thought it would be.

@@SonicntZane yeah, the whole point of smash bros is to advertise the different franchises in Nintendo’s arsenal, while Sonic isn’t a Nintendo IP, he still has games on the switch, people still buy smash bros for Sonic, Nintendo still makes money because of him, so I doubt they would have a problem with fully representing Sonic, it’s just because Sakurai hates creating new movesets for characters because he’s afraid that the new moveset would alienate players, and he made Sonic’s moveset in 2008, with the only games he took for reference being the classic games, Sonic 06, and Sonic the fighters

Down taunt seems to be explicitly designed for dodging grounded burst movement tools.
Sonic’s up throw is from Sonic Frontiers and his forward air is from Sonic Battle on the GBA.
This is the best sonic moveset I've seen implemented in a mod so far, the only moves that I don't like are neutral air, down air and up throw but other than that, it's almost perfect. Of course it's extremely broken but with proper balancing this could be the perfect rework that sonic needs

Edit: I just realized that he would be more campier with this new moveset...well, this mod is still a work in progress so they'll obviously nerf some stuff to make him less campy and more of a rush down, glass canon character.
I love this mod as it feels more like sonic with moves of new and old with cool references and isn't just

Despite Sonic being much more fun to play around with and given that extra dev time he deserved from being a rushed brawl inclusion, I do agree the boost is broken, you should only be able to do it once in the air but if Sonic is edge guarded he can keep trying to come back, I know everyone may not like this but I propose a boost meter so it’s not mindless braindead spamming and the boost always had a meter in Sonic Games.
Aside from that love that bouncing off the spring for up b now has a hit box with a new animation of him spinning around, the Battle moves fit him like a glove, the new idle animation is cool and man that SA1 Taunt really feels like it could’ve been in the vanilla game.

Tbh the spin dash sd is so common for people who are bad at sonic that only camp because people when they camp as sonic they are bad at sonic because they don’t learn his moves and combos and even sonic main do the classic spin dash sd

Imagine someone loses a game, they have to tweet something. And they don’t have Twitter.
Another solution would be to give Sonic his Frontiers moveset. Change Homing Attack to Homing Shot (It would do slightly less damage but to make up for it, it has a reduced start up and there are ten homing attacks. If you saw the actual move you would get it). Make side b Quick Cyloop (Sonic charges forward while activating the Cyloop ability. If he uses the Cyloop on someone they are damaged and propelled straight up. It can also break shields easily). Make up b Looping Kick and make it like Meta Knights. And make down b Grand Slam and have it be a counter move (Even from projectiles) And also give him a Phantom Rush mechanic. (This would be a meter that builds up the more Sonic deals damage. Once it fills Phantom Rush activates. Sonic will do more damage but only if he keeps the Phantom Rush bar up.)
Video idea: have modders try to nerf/balance the top tiers into mid/high tiers and see if they’re fun to play and play against.

Sonic as he normally is is necessary for the game’s balancing. You may not like him, but that probably means you main a character that requires constant use of the B button. That’s your counter. Pick a different character and I’ll switch it up too
I hate it when mods change things just for the sake of changing things. Yea, a lot of Sonic's ball moves need to be changed, but what's wrong with Sonic's back air or up air or forward air or down air?
