    4:14 I have two of those same 10gbe TP-Link switches for the same reason, well priced. I replaced the noisy fans in them with small Noctuas because I have them close to where people are (no dedicated server space). I swapped out my desk for a standing desk yesterday and from just moving the switch from one room to another seems to have killed it lol. No idea how, it's not like I Linus'd it and dropped it or anything. Pretty sad, but a lot of longer term reviews seem to show other people having them die too so bought something a bit more expensive last night 😬 doubt warranty will go down well due to my fan mod!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech 2 роки тому +21

      @@gnextras I bought a second QNAP QSW-1208-8C, only reason is because I've had one going for much longer than the TP Link ones without any issue. Also no fan mod needed when running close to people! Double the price, but I guess "buy nice or buy twice" with some things.

      To be frank, TP-Link was always quite a cheap network integrator. I prefer Zyxel (and previously Cisco, but they have way too much security issues).

      These switches usually have garbage quality PSU-s, you should try to start them from a lab power supply and if it works you can buy replacement psus for them. The startup circuit is the one dying, it will run forever but one it stops it won't start anymore. Common problem after tripped breakers and after moving hardware.

    Have you tried the Ultrastar DC HC500 series of Enterprise/Datacenter hard drives before? If cost is an issue, you can always shuck 'em on the cheap from WD MyBook external 3.5" HDDs. You'll seemingly just end up with an unspecified WD white label drive, but if you read the label carefully you'll notice that it is actually an unlabeled Ultrastar DC (Datacenter) HC520/HC530/HC550 or HC560 series hard drive from the (former) HGST factory. Which specific model you get depends on the capacity you go for, the new 20TB MyBook has a HC550 or HC560 inside!
    For over 3 years now I have been using a total of 19× 12TB HDDs in my server that I shucked from WD MyBook external drives, but in reality they are actually just Ultrastar DC (datacenter) HC520 HDDs that WD purposefully mislabeled as WD120EDAZ white label HDDs! Thus far I have not had even just a single issue with these drives, they do their work silently and flawlessly, not to mention that none have failed so far and all SMART data is 100% in the green! (and that is with pretty much 24/7 operation for the past 3+ years).
    As for the price advantages, the correctly labeled Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB HDDs were almost €500 each when I wanted to fill up my new server with HDDs, but the awesome lads @ Reddit pointed me towards the absolute motherload by suggesting I shuck the HDDs from the external hard drives in the WD MyBook series instead of directly buying the exact same drive but branded as an Ultrastar. I was lucky AF that the 12TB model was on sale that week for €209 a piece at Amazon, so shucking the drives instantly saved me ~€290 per drive, and almost €3500 for the whole lot!
    *Do note* that if you need a lot of drives and you're going to shuck, be sure to start with buying just a single one to verify it actually contains the HDD you thought it would, and then it is very much recommend to proceed by buying the drives you need in multiple batches (and preferably from multiple sources) to ensure that you end up with a proper distribution of drives from multiple different manufacturing dates and serial ranges. This is very important because as long as you make sure to use at most one drive from each batch per vdev (or if you have set it up in such a manner where you can lose two drives without data loss, then you can use two from each batch per vdev) this will ensure that even if there is a manufacturing defect or other type of malfunction within a batch of HDDs you'll still never lose data because of it!
    Oh, and be sure to run a full drive stress test for each new drive continuously for a few weeks (one week is the absolute minimum I'd say) before putting it to work by incorporating the drive into your storage server/cluster because the vast majority of drives usually fail either within the first days/weeks of usage or somewhere after hitting their MTBF (which is 2.500.000 hours for the Ultrastar DC HC520!)
    One more thing, check, double check and absolutely do manually verify that your stress test is hitting every single block on the device at least once during the test.
    I hope any of this info was useful for someone? If so, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a comment if this info was somehow useful for you 😇

    Bravo for documenting everything! It's painful how often I see this NOT happen and a lot of time and money gets wasted. Suggestion: skim over them every 6 months or once a year to see if anything needs to be updated, or just be mindful when something new is learned to go update the docs when you're done with that task. If anyone leaves the company, have them check their docs and update them before they go.

    Love the behind-the-scenes look at the operations side of stuff like this. I'm sorta regretting not applying for the staff writer position after hearing about your push to document testing processes; that is a subset of what I do in my current position. From previous work, I also know the value (and trade off) of centralizing storage, and in my current position the number of "doesn't make us money but does make our lives easier" tasks that the company needs to handle is getting concerning. It's just there's always a push for new stuff, and no one at the decision making level wants to say "all new development is on pause until we sort out the current backlog."

    Gotta be honest, I definitely feel a bit of a dissonance when it comes to Seagate drives... My family has always had them failing much sooner (and less recoverably) than their WD counterparts (albeit, in a consumer environment), and Backblaze has from memory always seen them have a bit of a higher failure rate than the other brands as well... yet from what I can tell, they seem to be generally considered the best in the enterprise sense, and I've had friends who swear by them in a consumer sense as well. I think part of your HDD failure problem is vibration. Those drives probably have an ok vibration rating in a server but if its not mounted properly that rating can mean nothing. I know its a terrible price tag for a good rack but if you look at it as either a one time long term purchase or saving money on prolonging drive life it starts to make the price more palatable. Worst case, you have your stuff in a proper rack and it becomes easy to work on and cable manage lol XD

    Hey Guys you don't have a UPS on your system or I couldn't see one. These help with brown outs as well as power outs. It's time to invest in one. Also I'd look at vibration isolation the "rack" from the floor, but possibly electrically grounding it all.

    Maybe you could shuck external Western Digital harddrives to get Hitachi Ultrastar He10 helium drives, those are data centre drives for cheap.

  • @ncohafmuta
    @ncohafmuta 2 роки тому +5

    Surprising the Ironwolf drives died that fast. Did they all come from the same vendor at the same buy time? I would have went with Ultrastar or Exos for the new ones. How are your drive temps in that case? Anything over 40C i'd be a little concerned about for drive lifetimes.
    EDIT: Getting into that many disks, may be worthwhile to have (if you don't already have some sort of inventory system) a unique label for each drive and then a spreadsheet with label, model, serial #, capacity, vendor bought from, date bought, date installed, location (enclosure #).

    Bit of a daunting task, but an idea for a creative video series? A state (or region) breakdown of big(ger) recycle / reuse facilities, besides waste management, that will take e-waste.

    I hope you will find a way to incorporate a creative video each week or maybe every two weeks. The technical review is easy and hard because it’s easy in the sense it’s about going through a known documented process but hard in that it is also tedious, laborious, and time consuming. The creative is hard because you have to come up with new video idea that may or may not pay off but it’s something you or the other team members enjoy because it is a GN video.
    For what is worth I hope you can do more to satisfy your inner creator but also wishing you luck that it too will help pay the bills. I for one will be looking forward to it. 😇😇😇👍👍👍

    Hmm... I've been looking at those 10Gb TP-Link switches. Have a couple of their 2.5Gb and a 1Gb, but nice to know they're Wendell approved with there not being a lot in the way of 10Gb copper switches with more than two ports... and I'm not interested in blowing a ton on SFP to copper adapters. However, that's unfortunate with the drives. I've got a mixture of Seagate, WD and HGST. They've all let me down, none more than the other, but people love to hate Seagate and it's funny to look in the comments and see them referred to as "the worst." That's a person that never walked into a server room, greeted by a literal three foot tall pile of Samsung hard drives. But I'll admit that Seagate isn't what it used to be.

    Isn't Ironwolf (non-pro) only rated for up to 8 drives per enclosure? And your 8-bay NAS is sitting on top of another enclosure with many drives? Maybe it's more than just a run of bad luck and you need to bump up to Ironwolf Pro or Exos.

    csv's should compress really well if you wanted to archive them. But I could also see that being a pain if you just wanted to render a graph from legacy data quickly.
