Today we'll be installing a set of polymer bearings in the z axis of the 4040 masuter CNC. The supplied bearings in this model are a bit loose and that results in chatter in the cut which can cause broken bits and poor surface finish in the carve.
This is one of easies, cheapest upgrades that you can make to this budget cnc. I will also be changing out the Z bearings on my 3018 since this kit came with 4 bearings.

I used a 19mm deep socket and a 5/16" x 4" hex bolt . Slide the bolt through the original bearing, slide the deep socket over the botl, thread the nut and as yoou tighten the nut it presses the bearing out, no clamps needed.

Excellent demonstration! The audio, lighting, and camera locations were just right. Thank you for NOT having any stupid background music playing.
Now, would probably be a good time to 'Tram' your spindle motor.

      Thanks Roger!!
I actually said a stupid line about tramming, but took out the comment, it was kinda a corny joke... I did end up tramming after though... it was pretty close just from lifting up into both of the screws though... front to back it was spot on from prior tramming where I tilted the whole gantry bar to get the front to back perfect, so it was only a tad crooked left to right from removing those 4 mounting screws.

I bit the bullet and picked up the aluminum housing for my 3080. It was a huge jump in precision. Far from economical compared to changing bearings but I can engrave in metal with really good results.

Definitely easier to remove & refit the motor mount with the motor removed. It makes straight alignment of the motor mount screws into the carriage.
Considering how tight it was to press the old bearings out, i don't think the Fox Alien would ever suffer the bearings slide out even without the sneaky little grub screws!!

Replaced the Z bearings in my 3018 after watching your video and the difference is huge. My question is whether or not its worth looking at replacing the X bearings too?

Do you know if anyone makes these for the 3018 pro, all I can find is 24mm length and I need closer to 34mm

I've seen 20mm ones used in pairs, making us 40mm long for the 3018, they stick out past the housing but not enough to reduce the travel.
