The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It's implied respect because everyone samples his music and steals his moves without giving him the credit. In the 80s and early 90s when rappers were sampling a lot of his stuff he got much respect but I guess everyone is so busy stealing everyone else's stuff trying to pretend it's original nowadays that they dont' mention it.

Why can't you use correct English? Sick meaning unwell? Not fit for work? What you mean to say is the James Brown footwork is unbeatable and unbelievable not sick! Poor use of the English language for heavens sake! If someone said you were sick in the head would that be a compliment to you? Exactly!

saw this live on Ed Sullivan show when I was a little kid. I thought it was the coolest thing I ever. The drama of seeing Mr. Brown having a coat tossed over his shoulders, consoling him was burned into my memory for life. 72 years now, I thought about, decided looking it, just to see if it was possible. It still stirs me.

Seriously, this "Man" was Spectacular. I mean, he can't be a Man... Look His talent, his power, His moves, dance, rhytm... That show when he seems to be so tired and then, suddenly, comes to Life again. Dude, seriously... James Brown was a god among humans, the guy was simply amazing.

I don't know what I like more, the hairdo, the coat made out of upholstery from the sofa, the two color capes, the fake but so real emotional collapsing, or the one legged dancing.

I remember seeing these re-broadcast on public TV when I was really little (in the early 2000s). I had never seen anything like him; the cape routine especially was burned into my mind. We had a CD of him playing live at Chastain Park from the 80s that got played over and over too. I couldn't understand the words he was saying back then, but he set the standard in my mind for what great music and great performance was. I'll never forget waking up on Christmas morning one year and watching the news reporting that he had passed... he was a complicated man, but he started from nothing and had a greater influence on music than anyone else in the 20th century. RIP Mr. Dynamite, Mr. Outta Sight, Soul Brother #1, Godfather of Soul, Funky President, and so on...
