It's unfortunate/weird how Alien Conquest failed, I recall it being a decent theme, and yet I don't have a single set from the line. It would seem now in retrospect that perhaps it got outcompeted by other themes. I mean Castle was still a thing at the time, Ninjago was just starting up, along with Atlantis being fairly popular, and of course Star Wars was stronger than ever.
LEGO Star Wars was having one of its hottest years in 2011, so I guess there just wasn't enough business to go around. And an alien invasion theme seemed corny and outdated, even though the Alien Conquest sets looked very cool themselves.
As a kid I loved alien conquest and even entered a competition held by a tv network to try to win the entire set. I really hope they do a similar theme in the future with cooler ships and more advanced builds. It doesn't have to be an alien invasion theme because I suppose it's part of why alien conquest failed but something with at least a similar style would make me extremely happy and would also make my bank account cry. Right now I'm trying to complete the set because I really wanted to do that as a kid. When the set first came out I managed to get the mothership, alien abduction, and earth hq before it got cancelled. Didn't help that my little brother would be careless when we played with the alien conquest stuff and would break stuff and lose bricks. He even ate one of the bricks lmao. So considering we never had much money, my mum considered it too expensive to keep buying us lego. 13:00 Wow, Wrench not only has the Blacktron II insignia (from the first space minifig I had from 1993), but also his torso pattern is a facelifted Blacktron I upper body! :O
The 1997 UFO sets were easy to combine with your City sets to create a spectacular 'alien invasion' scenario. This was during the reign of The X-Files, Independence Day, and Men In Black. I remember turning my police station into the FBI headquarters, the whole 'Res-Q' line was a secret government clean up agency. The 'Divers' theme was tasked with finding some underwater magical McGuffin to help fight the aliens. A 'flashback' scenario was played out at the same time with the 'Adventurers' series depicting how the McGuffin was originally found in ancient Egypt and subsequently lost again. Epic, epic times.
This was a great trip down memory lane! I'm in that 1978-87 Lego Space generation. No goodies and baddies; no storylines; just explorers with radios and metal detectors. When I played with the old sets, it was all about fixing crashed spaceships, or missing astronauts. If I wanted to do space battles, I had my Star Wars toys to play with (at that time, only the Lego Castle sets had weapons - swords and shields). I figured the different coloured astronauts meant they had different jobs to do (like the colour-coded uniforms in Star Trek), not that they were rival factions. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I like the idea that the original space sets stuck to Lego's old, pacifist ideals - they didn't need weapons or police, the universe was interesting enough without them! (My last sets were the first "Light & Sound" sets - after that I grew out of playing with Lego...)
you forgot one theme in this video. The lego rock raiders theme was released in 1999 and introduced several new pieces, such as the chrome drill, blade saw and hollow boulder. It was discontinued in 2000, but has a spiritual successor in 2009s power miner theme, which continued and developed on many of the same ideas.
Amazing video Spit! Brought back some old memories and nostalgia. I had no idea that some of these sets and themes were released only couple years after I was born. I remember having set 6815 Hovertron from Exploriens theme with these fancy holographic stickers.
I remember the trailer for Galaxy Squad, it was a direct continuation of that really cool Monster Fighters theme. I loved how they intertwined the story from one theme to another, even if I never ended up getting any of the sets.
I liked Alien Conquest and the UFO sets were my favourite sets from the theme. The best part was that all the UFO sets had different features, such as the mothership being able to spin and the "UFO abduction" set was able to pick up minifigures and light up.
I was so young when I got one of my first sets that I didn’t even know what it was or where it came from. It was gifted to me by a family friend and here, 11 years later, I’m just learning what it was. It was an ice planet set. I believe I still have the minifigure from is somewhere, but I probably turned the set into something else over the years of Lego building. I just got hit with a wave of nostalgia by the images in this video and decided to write this absolutely absurdly long comment. Thank you.
I'd forgotten how quickly they ran through those themes in the early to mid 90's, my heyday of playing with Lego. I had at least one set each from Blacktron, M-tron, Space Police, Spyrius, Ice Planet, and Unitron. Had honestly forgotten about a couple of them, thanks for that jolt of nostalgia!
So cool. Classic Space was my thing. I remember playing with my brother as our minifigs explored the vast cavern below our dad's recliner. I'm excited for the new Space wave coming in 2024.
My lego space journey started with m-tron. I loved space themes the most. The majority of sets I had were space themed and pirates. I had multiple sets. I had a lot of Spyrius, but man I was LOVING the Ice planet. They were on the decline, and there was only one lego store in my city back then, so we managed to get only like three small sets. But I loved them to bits. God this video brings back memories.
The Space theme of the 1900s was a great concept by creating multiple additions to one over arching theme over many years. Current Lego themes seem to be very serialized in terms of their world building and don’t often expand on themselves in the same way that the Lego systems space theme did. The many different factions each offered a completely unique identity and theme which allowed to build upon the open world of this theme. I wish Lego would do more themes with multiple different factions that can be collected instead of the good guy vs bad guy themes we often see. The Lego systems space theme was a little ahead of my time but finding the transparent and fluorescent pieces from these sets got me really excited. Those pieces were considered rare and collectible when I was a kid and I always wanted them!
I've got the odd space set here and there, a bunch of space police 1 and 2. But it was a really good Christmas when my parents bought me sets 6834, 6879, 6898 and 6973 from the ice planet set. I remember getting in a huff because mum wanted me to open them in that order, small to large, and I wanted to open whatever I wanted. She was right, of course. Her method was better. It usually was =) I really wanted 6983 but that big base was pricey. Never got any of the large lego bases, sadly. I recall UFO didn't really do it for me. I went off the space stuff, but instead got really into Aquanauts

I like the new City Space theme, and it's trying to get back to the fantasy side of space that we had in the 90's. I just wish they made more use of the satin trans purple that they use for the crystals and batteries!

I had those pieces for a really long time and by the time I was in my teens I had long lost the instructions and had no idea what the kits looked like lol. I still remember all the commercials for a lot of these sets from the 90's
I think this video is great. I miss the classic themes! I am really not at all fond of Lego's foray into licensed sets (though I totally understand why) or the evolution of themes like Ninjago, Chima, etc. I loved building castles and pirate ships and towns. I guess in my grumpy-old-man way, I'm saying I'd love to see more videos like this one based on the other classic themes!
I always headcanoned Spyrius as humanoid aliens, probably because their ships looked like flying saucers. And I'm with you in wanting an Ice Planet 2002 reboot, I loved that theme. Also, you forgot to mention that Rench's overall outfit design was an homage to Blacktron I, they just put a Blacktron II logo on there so as to reference both generations.
I wish Lego would either do a new line of classic space...or introduce a modernized incarnation of the classic space theme. Basically, bring back the simple, exploration style theme but with modern components and build techniques
Born in '90, definitely remember having all the robotech and insectoids. My cousin had the Ufo sets, and we would build spaceships the battle with dice. Rolls would be how many pieces the lasers would blast off.
I was waiting for some great sets out of that but never saw any in the stores. At the time I had lots of disposable cash and was ready to spend $1,000 on a Lego Space/Mars annual set... but they just didn't look that great.
Actually the Space Race began in 1957 with the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1. You are right though that the peak of it was in the 1960s. Thanks for the trip down memory lane :)

I still remember all the commercials for a lot of these sets from the 90's
Little sad you glossed of the 1989 space police having trans red windscreens. The trans red and blue was a great combo.
13:10 OMG WE HAD THAT SET- my brother and I would have been barely old enough to remember but I recognize that’s build lol
I remember the lego space monorail being advertised as a fairly recent one as a kid..i Had the mtron ones.
Makes sense, M-Tron came out just three years after Futuron.
This video was stellar
Thank you!
Space police 3 is truly my favorite set
I wish Lego would either do a new line of classic space...or introduce a modernized incarnation of the classic space theme. Basically, bring back the simple, exploration style theme but with modern components and build techniques
2:04 The yellow astronaut looks naked.
Space and Aquazone are still my favorite sets ever.
The child in me would love to see a proper revival of the Space Police/Blacktron line. Those were my favorite sets as a kid.
Born in '90, definitely remember having all the robotech and insectoids. My cousin had the Ufo sets, and we would build spaceships the battle with dice. Rolls would be how many pieces the lasers would blast off.
The first Space Police and Blacktron sets could have setup a nice setting for more storytelling.
omg its been years since i watched you and i found you on my recommended just now lol
Discs in my day were square. Floppy discs were like 3 1/2 inch and 5 and a quarter, if memory doesn't fail me....
No love for Rock Raiders or Space Port?
Mars Mission is what I grew up with
I was waiting for some great sets out of that but never saw any in the stores.
Petition for Lego to bring back ice planet
