NOTICE: The $245 "remodel" is really just the cost of painting the kitchen cabinets, NOT what he spent remodeling the kitchen, which included a new stove, hood, countertops, and flooring. The information on painting is good, but the title is misleading.

Chairman Mao would love the US Navy color scheme. Painting the hinges, though? Even sailors know "If it doesn't move, paint it. If it does move, salute it." Helpful video, but while bland is equally offensive to everyone, the bright white is a more fashionable color for painted cabinets.

I spent $65 to paint my kitchen cabinets from the 80s, (adding floetrol to my paint for zero brush marks), $15 to paint my window frames black, $5 to paint my backsplash black and my kitchen looks 10x better than a friend who just paid someone $30k for a botched job. Yay me.

  • @theChaseGroup

I just complted some cabinets in a rental with the same brands of paint. I used the shellac based primer instead of oil. Covers perfectly and sticks like crazy. I also used the same urethane Alkyd Behr. Sprayed on. Longer dry time but that lets it flow and it looks creamy smooth when dry. I couldn't bring myself to paint the hinges though. That screams "amature" to me. Hinges were cheap on Amazon and the "puzzle" putting it back together was no big deal and kind of fun and we did 37 doors and lots of drawers. If you get self closing hinges you don't have to install all the clips and extra hardware to keep the doors shut. That time saver makes it worth changing out all the hinges. Also...paint them white as that color will not go out of style like gray is starting to. Don't take offense to this I'm just sharing my experience. Love all your videos Kevin.

I really enjoyed this one! Our daughter just did the same thing to our weathered oak cabinet kitchen! Someone had broken into our home and left a door open which caused wood damage but it was only surface. So much work was created by this but we are doing it ourselves.... We are fixing up our cabin home which has a panoramic open water view...on an island in WA state with no stores or businesses...yep you have to own a boat to live there or take the very limited ferry rides for groceries etc. Its 5.5 nautical miles from Everett. We get everything budget for our home including like new used appliances! Yes we redid our entire kitchen with new paint, a like new dishwasher and spent a whopping $80 for an overhead stainless steel fan/light combo,. Our counters are in good shape so we saved them as is...our kitchen was transformed just like you suggest for so cheap! For now we are using the fridge there but have to repair the flooring below the vinyl before we replace it. I agree with you completely...reuse, repurpose and redesign saving as much as you can!

We use to resurface bathtubs and counter tops with a spray-on 2-part epoxy paint (no idea what brand, it was purchased wholesale with company branding). While it was nice a durable (and cheap!) to use on tubs and counters, it looked awesome on cabinets. And because it was an epoxy, you really had to try hard to chip or peel the stuff.
    General workflow:
    1) Remove all the things! Handles, stoves, etc. It it isn't bolted down, then it has to go!
    2) Paper and tape to cover everything that you don't want paint on. We used a HVLP sprayer, so paint got everywhere
    3) Repairs; Normal bondo to fix chips or gouges, and fiberglass bondo for holes or larger repairs. Sand it down when you are done and hope the texture isn't too bad of a miss-match
    4) De-Grease/Sand; We mostly worked in really bad section 8 apartments, so we often had to find the wood under all the grease and grime, and a light sanding just to give a little extra grab, but due to the paints used, we didn't spend more than an hour sanding.
    5) Wipe-Down with pint thinner or a damp cloth. Don't want all the dust to prevent stuff from adhearing
    6) Primer; We used lots of different primers, but I think mostly Killz? Again greasy apartments... gotta cover thick!
    7) Paint; Dust coat, and let partially cure, and then 2 real coats. Between the kilz and epoxy paint, it was pretty rare for any marker or things to bleed through
    8) Cleanup; Once it was dry (which took all of 10 minutes) then you pull the paper and tape off. If you put it all on right, this part takes no time at all!
First time doing this took me ~12 hours. After I had done 4-5 of them I had it down to ~6 hours (Paper and tape applicaiton and removal is really the time waster, everything else goes quick), but I was slow, some of the guys had it down to 4 hours and had a better looking product than me! Half a day for new looking cabinates was pretty satisfying... hated that job though. Working in IT is a much better fit for me, but I am glad I know how to do it, because I have done something similar to my house, so that was kinda great.

The SW is more of a hybrid. Both products will be a little more shelf leveling that regular acrylic (or latex) products. But the SW’s Emerald is soap and water clean up opposed to paint thinners and mineral spirits! 😁

The first thing they always seem to do is to start smashing the kitchen cabinets with a sledge hammer, when 99% of the time there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Take off the doors, give it all a sand and a coat of paint, put on some fresh hinges and bingo, you've got a new kitchen.

i just demo'd an entire 3 fam , am redoing 3 kitchens, 3 baths, and adding laundry to each unit for 100,000 -- this includes sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and an upgrade in panel services... plan is to rent, and sell each for 500k ... sometimes its worth spending the money to open the options up for later down the road imho, especially since you probably will never have that house vacant again to do a serious remodel

Do you sand the cabinets? I completely redid my own kitchen. Had a couple of quotes for $5,000 to complete it. Did it myself (took 3 weeks only working evenings and around the kids), and we spent a little extra on new pulls. $500 total spent, but a 10x ROI and a HUGE difference in the type of kitchen it became.

  • @workinalday4351

He did the floor, all new appliances and he removed some of the over heads, everything is prepped and painted so you have to keep in mind with all that' he is just repurposing the kitchen cabinets. For $245 to take those cabinets from old to new is pretty good.

@Donald Trump I know, I watched till the end, but it still made the kitchen look 10x better. I could not do what he did because I was lacking the kitchen in its entirety. But on doors, I might have been able to pull something similar and avoid spending $750 on 3 doors.

The message in this video is good. The kitchen looks good on video at a distance, but the hing3s make it look cheap. So,I guess, on a cheap rental, this is a good strategy because it looks 100x’s better than the original. But, honest costs should include the labor to paint... which had to be $300-500 for a painter... and you have $100 in cabinets pulls alone. So, new appliances aside...this is probably more like a $850-900 cabinet job. Regardless, another great instructional vid! Thanks Kevin.

For $145, the cabinet transformation is very impressive. Maybe could've used a light sanding on large flat surfaces. I think leaving the hinges was a great idea since it was a rental. The non-matching cabinet and drawer faces blend very well with originals. Very good video explaining process and thought behind your decisions.

I know a lot of people have problems with seeing the grain through the paint, for an extra couple bucks you can buy a wood filler. You just wipe it on with a rag, let it dry then do a light sanding and repeat. It's a little extra work and money but you will never know that it's wood under the paint. In 50 years if old hard wood cabinets become cool again, you just sand it down and you have wood again!
