  • Hello and welcome to my channel,
Today we launch from Cates park located in North Vancouver British Columbia. In this episode we explore the Indian Arm in search for crabs and prawns.
This video is focused on how to catch crab by boat by way of trapping. Please read through some important details listed in the description section and click the links below for more detailed information.
All anglers must have a tidal fishing license to fish tidal waters in BC. Children under the age of 16 are free but must still obtain a license.
The limit of crab possession is 4 (dungeness/redrock)
Dungeness crabs must measure at least 165 millimetres (6.5 inches) in width, 115 millimetres (4.5 inches) is the legal size for Red Rock crabs. The crab is measured along the widest points of its shell. The caliper shown in this video is the preferred way of measuring your catch.
Crab harvesting is only legal by use of trap, ring net, dip net or hand picking
You may use up to 2 rings, dip nets or traps in combination
You must immediately release all female Dungeness and Red Rock crabs. The female’s abdomen has a wide “beehive” shape; the male’s has a narrow “lighthouse” shape.
Anglers are also required to release all soft-shelled crabs. These crabs shell will eventually harden, and it is then deemed to be of higher quality for consumption.
The limit on prawns is 125 with a capability to use 4 traps per license. The retained prawns must be non-egg bearing. If it is bearing eggs, it must be released.

I appreciate that you measure on camera and talk about regulations and protecting the fishery. It’s the only way our kids and grand kids will be able to enjoy what we are able to enjoy. Bravo.

Great video!!! So informative and love your energy! Quick question where can one catch prawn or shrimp in Indian arm? I didn’t think it was deep enough? Thanks

Hi @soundlounge4941, and thanks for dropping by!
I've only tried twice in the arm and have not yielded enough to have any confidence. Generally, 250 to 300 ft depth and steep decline with a shelf is what I look for. It's a guessing game at this point in time. One thing is to check for sponge reef closures and avoid those areas. There's a map available on the DFO website. Use that for aid and try, try, and try until you get em. Hope that helps, good luck out there! 👍 😊

I've crab fished in Indian arm as well, you will get a lot of rock crabs there, and the sizes are rather small in that area....I like to crab just past english bay area, you get bigger ones there

😂 I saw that! Lol was waiting for something to mention it. Perhaps I'll try there next time. I've had some really good days crabbing Indian arm. It's how it goes. Some days u get them some days u don't. Either way always fun.
