Suburu's Return By Death isn't just a save function, it's an auto-save function. one that doesn't tell you when it auto-saves. It can be extremely helpful BUT at the same time it can auto save at any time, especially bad ones. it's like getting hit by an instant kill boss attack then learning that you got auto-saved right before you take the hit, so you're screwed.
It's like fighting an opponent in street fighter or king of fighters. You literally have "chip/1 health" which would die even if you blocked it. The enemy has TRIPLE HEALTH BARS and UNLIMITED TIME. All we can do is counter every single freaking move and beat him. That's what subaru would have to face if his respawn worked like that.
All the animes in isekai quartet are groundbreakers as isekai animes. Konosuba makes a joke about a perfect world, overlord is a nigh-omnipotent being entering a new world where he is lightyears ahead of everyone, re:zero has the rest loop, and well... the other one has a female lead, which slips me at the moment
There's also the risk of one of Subaru's deaths overlapping with a savepoint. This can happen in some videogames. The game is saved (either by you or automatically) just before you get killed, which makes you respawn in the savepoint, just to get killed again. Depending on the situation, you can get stuck in this loop and have no option but to load a previous savepoint (if there is one).
[!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] . . . . . . The risk is there, for sure but in Season 2, it was found out that the Witch's "love" for Subaru isn't some weird obsession, it is something deeper than that as Satella herself stated that Subaru gave her everything, gave her light, hugged her, etc. So, if Satella is the one setting the Save-points than its nigh impossible for her to ever set a Save-point that traps Subaru in a constant death loop. The Witch only cares about Subaru's safety and that's probably the reason why the save-point was updated after Rem fell into the coma. Having read the novels, there hasn't been a single instance that this has happened (of course). Satella always sets the save point some time before Subaru's death. [!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] [!!Spoiler Warning!!] . . . . . . . Yes, Return by Death is Satella's doing but it is hinted that it is an Authority of sorts. It is not related to the Royal Selection though, it IS related to the "love" Satella feels for Subaru. She speaks of him like she knew him before. It is only her that can possibly have the control over it. So, neither the Dragon, the Sage nor anybody else is steering it.
I watched this 4 years ago vut then re watched it through the 50 min episodes in the directors cut. I recommend everyone to do that because its more satifying to watch those ones than the original season 1.
to people who said why don't abuse RBD. Everyone is scared to death the amount of pain and also to end your life is not as easy as you think. the more he died the more he damages his psychological. how impressive Subaru still can hold it by now he is man of commitment
Holy shit, i'd always speculated on what determined Subaru's point of respawn. I hadn't even considered that Satella could be directly in control of it, and if she is, that's such a subtle way to completely control every action and every outcome.
I always interpreted his successful path being the one in which both he and Emilia live. In the first and third arc, it was primarily Emilia's life in jeopardy, and in the second arc it was his own. The checkpoint seemed to update whenever both of their lives are secure. Now after watching this though, I'm wondering if I viewed it that way because those were exactly Subaru's goals in each arc. I've heard of the IF stories and I wonder if they contradict this theory.
I think the respawn point updates after he completes his current goal. He realised rem is fucked only after his goal of saving emilia was complete (at least for him) so the save point updated automatically
I'm very confused on why people think Subaru should kill himself more often just to get more info, like do you have no concern for your life that you'd kill yourself over and over again for any reason? Y'all concern me. I mean, when he starts doing that, everyone just looks at him like 'what the hell man, hold some value over your own life more' even the (SPOILERS?) god damn jealous witch herself who is responsible for his respawns tells him to love himself so I dunno why people think him using his own life like that is a good thing BECAUSE IT'S NOT IT'S A VERY BAD THING-

Made me do a double take and want to examine how seeing things from other perspectives is a theme embedded in the plot’s progression. Probably in a different vid. Cheers!
Rems death is like catching a shiny and forgetting to save
Straight to the point, and absolutely spot on. Loved it
6:00 - 6:30 I started tearing up. I think it was the background music
People calling subaru a weakling just because he can't just DIE to fix everything clearly don't know how heavy and scary death is.
No I think you’re misinterpreting what I said. The implication wasn’t that he’s a weakling. Everyone fears pain. I just think that he has a specific aversion to pain that characterizes his personality and actions.
@@OniMaru oh no 😅 i was just expressing my thoughts on how new viewers of rezero get turned off on how "weak" subaru is compared to their stereotypical ISEKAI.. 😅
@@OniMaru but yeah I mean Subaru is a very REALISTIC character in terms of how he fears death because I mean If i were him I wouldn't really want to die over and over again even if it means changing the future cause that is too traumatizing and will probably have broken me by the 2nd return by death
@@OniMaruthat's a result of rbd too. He revives and his body is reset, any pain he goes through is going to vanish along with any chance of adjusting to it. It's indirectly brought up through discussions about differing views on healing magic as well. Subaru isn't unusually averse to pain he's unusually unable to adjust to the kind of pain he goes through because he revives.
Jeez this is such a good video, and yet only 7.5K have seen it at this time... You deserve more views dude
man every time the "call of the witch" plays out i fell realy REALY BAD
i havent watched re:zero but still watched the vid 😎

I really like his theory about how return by death works. Having read the LN and knowing how it canonically works, this theory is pretty good regardless of whether it's correct or not.
Okay, wow, your theory on the major plot from Satella was so plausible that it is mine theory as well now.
Waiting for new episodes
Makes my brain tremble
When subaru dies of old age
Bro i got both my earbuds in.. you aint have to hit me with that OST… i thought i was about to get gutted..
Rem not being able to be saved makes me think of when Casm on Fallout New Vegas saves right as your about to get bashed in the face.
Fantastic Video man, u actually made me cry.
3:11 I never thought about this but why didn't Subaru ability not silence him here.
beacuse he didn't say he is RESPAWNING but he have ability that work only when he die
@@comzytpl2261 I mean that's still means the same thing and if Subaru could just reword how his power to work to explain to others how he knows things, he'd probably have much less problems.
@@spicyluvsyou you can be right
@@spicyluvsyou lol Subaru actually thought about that in Arc 6
"i have been doing everything in my power to not read the ln" I know that feeling very well
I dont think it's 100% confirmed yet, that RBD is Satella's doing
Watching this video made me think, it might have to do with the Royal Selection process.. so maybe the dragon or the sage or whatever could be steering it

Please keep up the re zero videos this is dope 🔥
Great video mate
Thanks so much!
Thanks you for this great video sir
Pretty sure the condition is just a path where subaru doesn't die
The Toothpaste Man no crap Sherlock lol
@@NiqIce hey, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Pretty sure my post was fine considering the video
This is why you should never turn on auto save

I think the save point is the last point in time where Subaru felt content with everything.
I flinched when he said UNFORGIVING world of Re:Zero
In the coming episodes you will know true suffering, now he'll confront his past
I feel like Re; Zero is a much Darker, Sadder, version of Groundhog Day.
The suffering of return by death is a personifaction of how one feels when there pure skilling account get's a combat level.
I think the respawn point updates after he completes his current goal. He realised rem is fucked only after his goal of saving emilia was complete (at least for him) so the save point updated automatically
It’s almost like picking a bad dialogue option just out of curiosity but your save gets corrupted
I'm SO glad u haven't read the light novels! I have and I love seeing ppl give predictions without knowing what will happen
Finished watching episode 8 in season 2. It broke me...
I'm very confused on why people think Subaru should kill himself more often just to get more info, like do you have no concern for your life that you'd kill yourself over and over again for any reason? Y'all concern me.
I mean, when he starts doing that, everyone just looks at him like 'what the hell man, hold some value over your own life more' even the (SPOILERS?) god damn jealous witch herself who is responsible for his respawns tells him to love himself so I dunno why people think him using his own life like that is a good thing BECAUSE IT'S NOT IT'S A VERY BAD THING-
Bruh I saw the title and like
Zero Two the cruelty of respawn lmao
For a second there the thumbnail looked like Zero Two from DITF.
Now that you mention it 🤔
*I'm a simple girl, I see Re:Zero, I clicked*
The whole season 2 (24 episodes divided into part 1 & 2 with 12 episodes each) might only cover arc 4 of the LN, considering it's currently the longest running arc
Yes it will only cover arc 4
@@Wolfstray I haven't read the LN yet (and not planning to), but just the prospect of Subaru facing an even more threatening Sin Archbishops than Betelgeuse make my brain trembles 🤪
While I love Subaru's rant scene I can't help but think "Ok, but what could you have actually done to prepare for this?".
He thinks "Someone other than me would have been far better than me. Because isekai protagonists are cool and not so arrogant and pathetic like me"
He hated himself way too much to perceive that
The save did not fail him he would not be able to save both of the people he loved
I'd recommend reading the web novel alongside the anime if you wanna understand Subaru's character more than the web novel is the right way to go.
Maybe Subaru's Ability is more on the fact that it updates everytime he avoids a life threat.
respawning restricted ☠️
goes back to orbit
This analysis concerning the savepoints is really well observed.
At least in my opinion.
~Edit: Typo ^^
1:52 WHAT IS THE SOUND CALLED?? I've tried to find it for a long time and still can't find the audio file for it.
RbD will have some more development put into it in arc 4 which can lead us into some possible theories on how it works.
I think in world his respawn changed, sure, but not necessarily for any reason in particular. I think even if Rem came with him to take on the witch cult the spawn point would have been identical.
So the save point guy knows about Subaru's power
I mean Satella in season 2 says that she only wants Subaru to be saved by return by death and that him saving everyone else is just him using RBD to his advantage, meaning he doesn't need to save everyone to move forward, just himself.
episode 8 of season 2 is when my despair ____ ____ __ ________
that ability is the witch curse
