I am discussing 12 things that people regret after moving to Cyprus. This is the view of many friends and people that I met here that also moved to this lovely Mediterranean island.
There is also one specific reason that means a lot to me personally. Let me know what you find the most interesting, and if you agree, or not.
I moved to Cyprus in 2019 and since then I experienced a lot of different things. The good and the bad. And so in this video I summarize some things that you definitely need to know!

Absolutely agree with everything you’ve said. I live on a British military base, been here now since April and omg the summer was so hot. Only now starting to cool down a little. The job opportunities are very limited for non EU and people who don’t speak Greek.
And the finding brands over here is insane. I struggle to find organic products and a lot of UK brands. Even finding double duvet is hard and still haven’t found one yet 😅
Traffic is insane and a lot of the Cypriot drivers are crazy. The horn is all I hear even when the light has only just turned yellow they honking at me.
Things to is limited, I find a lot of the attractions are very far away and spread out but I guess it’s a different way of life over here, I personally love it and never want to leave but a lot of people I talk to think it’s boring, I wouldn’t call it boring but it’s different.
The island is very isolated, but you learn to find the beautiful places on the island but it really is a lovely place to be.
I went over the the north side twice now and I really didn’t like the vibe, it felt quite negative and more run down than the south. I went over to famagusta and the walk through by Nicosia and I don’t think I want to see any more of it. Didn’t enjoy it. But the south side is beautiful. Such a shame about what happened and you can really feel the sadness and negativity when you enter the “places”.
I used to live in UK for years, in your country and in general in all countries of Europe if you don't speak the language you cannot work . In Cyprus you are accepted to work in many jobs even without knowing a single word in greek which is insane for me, I don't want to talk in English in my own country. I know so many English people here who live in Cyprus for more than 20 years, married to Cypriot men/women and still cannot even say a single word in greek. Do you think that's normal? And you actually wrote a comment complaining that you cannot find a jof if you don't speak greek? Learn then!!!!! When I used to live in UK English people were so judgemental about foreigner's level of English, my English is pretty good but I had many foreign friends there with strong accent who faced so much racism because of that. At least they were trying to speak English, then why when you English people leave from UK you think people should speak your language? Especially if you come to a country for work? As a nation you dont even bother learning a second language, here in Cyprus we learn from kids at least 2 extra languages except of greek. Just learn greek or go back to UK! And about the "English products" that you are searching here in Cyprus, are you serious?😂😂 You people have no sense of what food is, when I was in UK the food was terrible and the products so unhealthy, thats why most of your population is overweight. Stop humiliating yourself on internet
For mold you simply need to ventilate the house, even if its cold. If you close up all windows you're not going to get rid of the moisture.
dehumidifier, airflow keep the heat on winter and you shouldn't get mould. I do want to move to Cyprus in around 10 years time

Hey, yes, if you want to stay in Cyprus for longer than 90 days you need to apply for residency.
Nice review, perhaps incomplete. Cyprus is a very young society, with all pitfalls this brings along. 1) The main source of annoyance for me is unruliness, particularly when driving. With close to no law enforcement on the streets (you wonder what the police is so busy doing instead), it is extremely common to see people parking in the middle of a trafficked road just to go get a can of coke in the store, running red traffic lights, getting into one way streets just to save 3 minutes of their precious time..Sometimes these behaviours are only the symptom of a profound naivety and selfishness, but they can be very dangerous for the others, so be careful out there! 2) Isolation is indeed a problem, and Cypriot society is very conformist, everybody behaves the same and seem to get along with similar people only. If you're used to living in diverse, culturally lively countries, it might be a problem. 3) Environmental awareness: again, for many things Cyprus is stuck in the 80s or, being optimistic, 90s. People idle car and truck engines all the times, often times for absolutely no reason, and freely throw/dump garbage in fields or nature as if they owned the place. Again, if you're used to a modern, environmental friendly culture, you'll feel like a time machine brought you back to the 80s.

Nah not really, I’m Greek from Greece and the Cypriot cuisine is much inferior. I’ve lived here for over a year and went to several restaurants but nothing is comparable to mainland Greece food.
Lol I don't think so ,best food in the world is Japanese then other asian cuisines and in Europe most tasty cuisine is the spanish one and if we compare the breads worldwide, German bread is the best. Southern europeans eat too much white bread.

110 F temperature continually for four months, feels like hell, high electric bill expenses, not liable organic food, Agly high stories apartments and rude driving. The worst of the worst.
Increase in fixed costs is the same all over the world you're not alone in Canada it was 800 for month rent now it's 1500 . Heat double electricity double.
1)Before moving to another country, the obvious, expected and wise thing to do is a bit of RESEARCH. If you move to an island you obviously won't be able to drive to another country... duh🙄.2) Cyprus is an island in the south Mediterranean. What kind of climate did you expect to find ?! 3)Cyprus might be an island, but come on, news of the rising prices WORLDWIDE do arrive even to Cyprus! Besides, prices are going to be higher for goods getting transported to islands, for obvious reasons 4)Cyprus might be heavily dependent on tourism but that doesn't mean that all people do is party everywhere all day long. FYI in Ibiza, the locals are disgusted by the floods of youngsters partying all night getting so drunk that the puke, piss or make out in the streets. If THAT'S what "interesting" is , we're MORE THAN HAPPY to be "boring" (tell your friend). 5)The list could go on and on but I'll close this here by saying that whoever isn't happy here can go back to wherever they came from or search for the perfect country. Noone was forced to move here and noone is going to be stopped if they wish to leave tomorrow. But deciding to STAY in a country only to keep moaning and criticizing just about everything is annoying and unhealthy.
I live in Tenerife … I was thinking to move there … but it looks like the same and it’s not cheaper … what about taxes for someone working in line? 12% for real? Where can I know better about it?
it depends whether you have a business or not. if u do u can pay 2,5% corporate tax
If you think its hot there, try visiting Houston, TX where its been over 100F just about everyday for July & August along with humidity. I would love to move here or somewhere similar though. Thanks for the info.

You can just spend the summers in the mountains, its cooler at night and even some nights you need a jacket.

Cyprus is rich in beautiful beaches and culture that's all.
Its all the same but the other way round😂😂😂 ... But the most important thing to realize is not while driving but actually while crossing the street. They should look to their right and not to the left.

I developed a pain in the throat after drinking filtered tap water. Had to switch to only bottled water to reduce the pain.

Now cost of living is very high.
In Cyprus, if you come from a cooler climate, it might be worth having a second apartment in one of the mountain villages such as pano platres where the climate is alpine and cooler. When Cyprus used to be a British colony the British governor of the island would head up the troodos mountains in the summer to escape the heat and move back down in late autumn.
It is not too bad, Texas and Florida worse, we need hot yoga in Cyprus.

I came from USA and I'm staying! I go back to USA for work now and then as my profession is better in USA, Plenty fun here, Summer can be uncomfortable... HOT! but no more than any other Mediterranean location, I got a new tooth for 500 Euro in USA they want 4,000 USD and that's with insurance! I own my property so rent is free, I have a Nissan NV200 van which BTW I recommend for Cyprus as Rico pointed out delivery can be slow so a van or a twincab Pickup truck is recommended. I must say the highways are in excellent condition, well paved anbd smooth driving. The secondary roads are fine as well. Tertiary roads can be small and bumpy and lots of dirt roads as well. One thing getting out of control here is the real estate prices that are going thru the roof. I also agree that salery can be low. Being self employed is great if it works out and that's about the only way to make some serious money here.

Very good video! My only, and beigest regret would be trash and garbage problem on streets, (but it is common problem in other countries too) so, I am trying ignore trash everywhere.
I am struggling with this too... I don't like it at all and whenever someone cleans an area, a few days later it's dirty again… I assume mainly because of the tourists who just don't care.

We Cypriots know that we need tourists so we aren't trashing places....but tourists don't care
Hey Rico: every country has its pros and cons. People moving to Cyprus should do their due diligence and possibly spend a month or two to see whether they will like or not before relocating. 😮It’s not for everyone!
The heat is the heat. Dubai, Egypt, Greece, etc are all hot in August and September. If possible, take your vacation and leave for another destination during the heat!
Of course Cyprus is not a major hub for mega parties all the time, but Limassol and Ayia Napa are places where there are enough wild parties going on especially 6-8 months of the year.
Boredom also depends who you hang out with and have good friends. If you are a loner, then that will apply everywhere you live
Feeling island fever. Athens is approximately an 1 hour away by air for getaways.
Again there are good and bad in every country. I still prefer Cyprus to many places I’ve lived in, on the other hand, I’m older now, so many of these issues wouldn’t bother me too much. I would try to adapt to the culture of Cyprus
I’m currently living in Thailand, although beautiful and inexpensive, there are lots of negatives living here too! Culture and most Thais don’t speak English, for starters!

However, some people would like to know it and this video helps them for their research, I hope. Also, I find it interesting that you live in Thailand for so long. I lived in Bali, and I liked it. I assume it's very similar. I'm already excited to go back to Asia in the near future and share my travels here.😊

Your videos about Cyprus are always well done, informative and entertaining. I hope to visit Cyprus at some point (well after the summer because I am not a hot weather person). Looking at some of the aerial scenes of Limassol especially, I hope that the officials in Cyprus will be careful not to let their country become too "westernized." Cyprus is a beautiful country with a rich history and unique culture. Please don't turn into Miami, Dubai or some other fun destination that lacks a soul.

To summarise, Cyprus is still a developing country. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a fact. I lived 1/3 of my life in developing countries because the pros outweigh the cons.
Except for the slow moving pace, lacking health care and poor selection of goods, if we could drink the tap water and flush the toilet paper too, foreigners would have almost nothing to complain about so... :)

You need to go and stay in Cyprus for 4 weeks in a self catering apartment to get an idea of the life in Cyprus before moving there.
Absolutely! I always recommend to first stay in an Airbnb and get an overview of the country. Good tip!

But I've always been going around. Was In Thailand for 2 years. Then Crete for 8 months. Now Im thinking Cyprus a few months.
Easy solution: I was annoyed by the water/bottle problem also. The first thing I did was to order an on-desk water filter. Runs without electricity, and you just attach a switch-valve to your faucet. No modifications are needed. The quality is excellent, it has a high flow rate. And it filters 99% of all metals, chemicals, and bio pathogens. The water even tastes much better and "sweeter" than bottled water. One filter cartage costs around 65 Euros and lasts you 6 - 12 months.
(You are supposed to switch it after 6, but that is more to law-related liability safety declarations, I think) I usually use them for 9 months.
Yes, the shopping/availability problem is the largest drawback for me. Especially since most packages need 3-4 weeks to arrive. For reasons. But even if you are spending 200 a month for shipping, you're still saving a lot from taxes etc.
And I find the GESY is quite good, especially for the price. Especially if I look at Germany, as far as I remember, they are calling for more money already, while also telling the people they will cut the coverage a lot, and may introduce 800 buffer you have to pay yourself until they cover things at all. Quite a joke - especially for the self-employed who have to pay almost 1000 € per month.
In Cyprus on the other hand from my experience, I started to do checkups and "maintenance visits" again since the equipment everywhere I visited is state of the art / more modern, and the doctors are excellently trained. Often in the US or UK. Most importantly, they care and have the time to do so. In Germany, I did not go for the minor conditions I experienced, since I could google the things as well, which is as useful as a doctor who is basically most occupied with 10 other things while "checking" you and his key metric is to get you out of the room within under 5 minutes again :-D
(I heard more than once that Cypriots seem to visit Germany when it comes to very delicate heart surgeries etc., though)

The tax advantages still make it worth it.The mole can be fixed openinng windows and with anti mould paint.
In cyprus you have to enjoy both worlds. When its too hot go the Troodos or villages around the mountains and when its winter go down near limasol ,nicosia or Paphos and when its Summer you can easily fly to Europe or Asia . I love cyprus and it"s people . Cyprus was the first country I visited and I was really tough on those times few people can speak in English !! year 1994. So I learned Greek and it made my life easier and fun!
Regarding the hot climate, there is an easy solution: I am spending my summers in Deauville in Normandy, where it is very sunny, but typically only 22 degrees. French food! The Polo Cup! Come October, back to Paphos.
Re drinking tap water, I don't see the problem here. Why would someone drink water in the first place? The fish have been doing it in there. Yuck! There are plenty of other beverages to choose from, ranging in quality from 4 to 40 percent, so there is something for everyone.
And yes, I too waited three months or so for my new interwebs to be installed back then. Not in the fireplace though, most likely because I don't have one.

Yes, but as we both know, Zivania is only for gullible tourists. Real people don't drink that stuff.
It is still handy to have around though, like when your car is stranded with an an empty tank, you can run your engine with it.

this must be a miracle. None of my friends (4 persons) pay less than 650 for 1 bedroom in Larnaca (rented in 2022) and it’s not even close to center
Ahh I wouldn't compare Seattle cost vs Cyprus cost hahah but Seattle is like the same cost of living as New York, and San Francisco. Two bedroom in Seattle costs $2,000 😆
All seem valid issues which might deter some people, but if they do their research prior to moving it would hardly come as a surprise. The Economy and rising inflation has certainly increased prices over the last few years, however it’s a global issue and every country is suffering from the rising costs of inflation and the current economic conditions.
One can always find solutions, even to the mould! 🤗
The best thing with Cyprus is that you can swim to Syria and have a Shisha and come back in the same day. 😂😂😂
