    I'm still using the Crunchbang system that I set up on this computer in 2013. My ancient hardware doesn't feel slow because the OS is so light. I've had to hack it pretty hard at times to keep it running. Major Debian upgrades have sometimes been troublesome - shifting from sysv to systemd gave me a bit of heartburn - but it is so efficient that I never did get around to swinging over to a different distro or to even do a clean reinstall.
    Nice to see that the new improved Crunchbang keeps to the original design goals. It is just a great Debian install.

    Jay, I, for one, have never heard of Crunchbang ++. Now that I've seen it in action with the pros and cons fully explained, I like it. I'm a big fan of Debian Linux and my love for this long-term distro is only eclipsed by Arch. Great video, as usual. I just love your channel and what you do to educate the public in the awesome and exciting world of Linux!

    Just to let you know, that after this video, I installed #!++ on my laptop. Absolutely love it, now my daily driver. Just what I was looking for. Many thanks indeed for making this video recommending it!

    Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I thought I might have been the only one to have enjoyed #! for its simplicity, versatility, and ability to boot on most any hardware ATT (2009-2013).
    Back in the day, I honed in on Linux Mint Mate (LMDE 1 & 2) on my home PC, Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q8400 w/8gb ram) as my daily driver. But for my various mobile computing needs when I taught at universities, language schools, and at company offices, I used an installed on USB version of CrunchBang (#!). It was fast, & lightweight regardless of installed hardware at hand where ever I went.
    I was completely dumbstruct and heartbroken when it was discontinued by the developer for lack of users (or so he said). I tried Bunsen Lab's version, and like you, felt it untrue to the original. I tried #!++ for a period of time, but my computing needs and hardware requirements changed over the years and I've gotten away from #!++.
    Currently, I use a Lenovo Yoga 6 with the new AMD Ryzen 5700 w/16gb ram & high rez touchscreen (spoilt by Chromebooks). I've honed in on Debian 11 Cinnamon DE w/non-free drivers as my daily driver, also changed to testing repos - I like rolling releases over nuk'n pave; I know. I should use Arch, but then I'd have to retrain my terminal console commands' muscle memory - I'm so used to Debian.
    After watching your lovely video review of an ol' flame of mine, I'm going to give her another try; if for nothing more than a mobile (USB) daily driver, again.
    Keep on truck'n.
    MLE.

My laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad SL-410 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6670 @ 2.20GHz with 3.7GB RAM circa 2011 and Crunchbang++ is perfect! 👍👍👍👍👍 - Jay, you are Simply Awesome! Thanks for show casing CrunchBang++!
    Found CrunchBang++ thru DistroWatch when I was looking for a light-weight distro for my older PC.
    First thing caught my attn was Conky, speed & how minimum it is. Then was the 'Right-click' menu...
    Ultimately I settled for LinixMint xfce - though not as light-weight, it fit my work-flow better @ then.
    Yes, it's also cool to spin load of VMs in more powerful machines!

    I really liked Bunsen Labs and would of used it on my desktop if it wasn't so behind. With ++ being based on Debian 11 that's just about as new as I need for most things including hardware support. I will probably download this to give it a spin in a VM. Open box can even look pretty good too, especially with certain compositors.

    I used Crunchbang (#!) 9.04 back on my Celeron Windows 98 SE laptop.
    I was always impressed back in 2009 that a 266 mhz machine with 128 MB of RAM could run Chromium and play 480p youtube videos.
    More importantly, the laptop had USB 2.0 ports, which let me use a more modern USB wifi dongle that would never have worked on Win9x.

      While it might work for the moment, I wouldn't count on it working for very long. There are a bunch of specialised packages that are likely to have dependencies in the base Debian install and if any of the base install packages are upgraded in an incompatible way, you will find things breaking without a clear path to fixing them.
      That's what happened to my original CB install when the distro died and I upgraded to an unsupported Debian release. I managed to strip out or fix the broken stuff so I kept my system going but it was a close thing to just doing a clean reinstall of Debian. Still I learned quite a bit by persisting with fixing things.

    I don't understand how it's "lightweight" when it looks like it was using over 800 mb at startup. I have gnome Manjaro on an old laptop and after bootup I'm looking at about 565 mb and it's GNOME! Does anyone have some kind of explanation as to how all the extra RAM goes into a black hole and so it doesn't really count or something?

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys 3 роки тому +2

      I tossed it into a VM and out of the gate it was using 398MB with an open Terminator terminal. I forgot to look at Conky before busting open the terminal. :)
      I'd call that pretty lightweight.

      Ubuntu 21.04 with all snap removed after reboot and settled down 614Mb. Not bad for Gnome I think.

    • @tealc6218
      @tealc6218 3 роки тому +2

      Your incredulity is correct, they are in fact NOT "lightweight" . These Debian based openbox distributions like Crunchbang++, Bunsen labs, and Mabox are all bloated, typically running at 350mb to 440+.
      Other tiling windows managers are
      1-mostly running with lower overhead,
      2-have better systems for tiling and
      3- Are more configurable.
      I remember a few years ago most openbox was below 300mb often in the low 200s mb.

      YMMV, I've got it running on a Core2Duo w/4GB Ram and it clocks in at 550mb on startup. Haven't had any Gnome Distro use under 1GB Ram. Tried Gnome Manjaro, same.
