Why did I have to come to a UA-cam video to see what the Evloution UI looks like? There is not a single picture on their web site.
Bad marketing on their end I guess.
@@SwitchedtoLinux Could you do a video on making a local backup of mails using Evolution, because every time I try (Copy folder content locally for offline operation, then Back up Evolution Data) my backups either contain none of the mails or only some of them.
Imagine we got evolution in GTK4. That'd be great. (I'm talking GTK4, not LibAdwaita exactly, though I'm fine with either).
For enterprise usage, Evolution has great support for MS Exchange servers (also with Office 365). Using Evolution on my work laptop as the only Linux user is a mostly Microsoft dominated environment. :) It was a easy switch from Outlook and everything including tasks and calendar with appointments with other people work out of the box!
You're the best Linux teacher out there!
There are few other alternatives to replace outlook but evolution so far is the best because it comes with MAPI implemetation Evolution-ews created by Gnome which is included with Evolution. Thunderbird has extensions for exchange server but it isn't free. I wonder if thunderbird will come to it's senses and include something like evolution-ews out of the box.
thnake you,
I couldn't add Gmail automatically, but other programs add it automatically
so i like thunderbird
A lot of people criticize Evolution, primarily because, to them, it looks old and ugly. I don’t care. I want functionality. I don’t need my favorite programs to have a new look every two years; I just want them to be sturdy and reliable. Evolution keeps working better; it just keeps looking the same. I recently discovered how easy it is to sync Evolution with Google Mail and Google Calendar. When my wife asked me about syncing Google with Outlook, I learned it was much more complicated. If you’d rather send and receive e-mail than tinker with how your program links, Evolution is really good.
currently running betterbird so interested to see another option. for work I'm just using outlook in the web browser as "good enough"
I tried Mailspring and really liked it but there was no way to import the 20 years of emails I have stored in Thunderbird. So I'm still using Thunderbird.
Thanks you for this, I wasn't aware of this alternative. I've been wanting to get off my now very old version of Outlook but Thunderbird has its issues and seems to follow suit with UI changes that I don't like. Its got to be worth giving this a try. I like the idea of the local mail files being shown on their own, IMAP is all good and well but if something goes wrong or you get hacked there is a real risk of losing everything even local copies when emails are synched up again, that's assuming that everything is even being stored locally because it's not always the case.
I found to love Evolution ever since I discovered it pre installed in GNOME 💪
MESSAGE FILTER is extremely useful. I am using it to color code incoming email based on subject content. However it appears to only work for new mail received from the time the MESSAGE FILTER is created. Is there a way for the rule to apply to all mail in the folder and not only to mail received after the MESSAGE FILTER was created? Appreciate your guidance, Thank you in advance.
Would you please go over Mutt and NeoMutt. Specifically getting it setup properly.
One has to put incoming and outgoing servers name manually this will not attract person switching from Windows. You just have to enter your email address and password and MS Outlook as well as free Microsoft Mail does everything for user. Other than that it seems to be good feature rich email client.
You explain things very nice.
You shouldn't assume that all Windows users are idiots and a lot of us have been around a while.
@@sa3270 People need everything automatic.
This is going to come as a shock to you, but even on Windows I used to enter all the info manually because auto fill doesn't always work correctly no matter the OS. Why do you think all Windows are morons? And No, people don't need things done automatically for them. And it's clear you haven't used Evolution even a little bit, as it's not "feature rich" by a long shot. I use it daily after spending countless hours configuring it as best I could to what Outlook did out of the box.
No you do not. Nearly every email server will automatically fill in the server settings by default.
Do you know the correcto config with micrisoft365 mail counts?
KMail is super wonky, especially since you can no longer use it with Gmail. Thunderbird on the other hand it is possible. Evolution is a good client also.
> especially since you can no longer use it with Gmail
Really? I haven't experienced any issues with using a gmail account with kmail.
I use my Gmail account in KMail every day, no problems. The only issue I had was that KMail displayed tags as folders (or something like that), but this was actually caused by Gmail and could be solved by setting some options within Gmail settings.
It should be ported to Windows.
Thunderbird not working at all with 365..
I actually quite like Evolution. Well, I have to "work" with HCL Notes professionally, so I can only love any other mail client. But all in all I like (the paid) em client on Mac OS a bit more. Especially the integration of an Exchange account is sometimes very annoying with evolution. Also, I've seen evolution just "forget" my accounts twice.
I am currently using windows live mail on windows 7, and will be switching to using Ubuntu, and want to have as easiest time with the transition as possible. It looks like most of the programs I am currently using have a Ubuntu version, and I just have to find an email client that will be similar to, and import my emails, accounts, and address book. It looks like Evolution will be my best bet. Is there anything I should look at or consider?
Evolution is my preference, but depending on how you do email, you might look at Geary
I'll check it out. Thanks! @@SwitchedtoLinux
The black mode makes it boring
If it support ics, i will use it.
Please try Betterbird.
Don't give up your day job
Evolution is okay, I've switched myself over from Outlook as I have exchange for work. Evolution has a lot of problems though, a lot. It constantly throws up errors connecting with servers, both IMAP and EWS. Message pane still can't select font size or all the fonts in your system ( it gives a very limited selection). Font settings and display settings are abysmal, but a step up from TB. Editing an email is a royal PITA, you can see the space but it doesn't let you take it out. Outlook on the other hand allows any number of edits and even white space no problem. I have my evolution set to a custom theme, as the default is horrid. I also don't like a dark theme on my email clients. Part of the problem with Evolution is that it is only being maintained by like one person now. Is it better than TB? Yes, if TB did EWS natively I would probably use that. Is it a decent replacement for Outlook? Yes, but barely.
